LANCASTER DAILY JSTtiLLLGERVER MONDAY APE1L 10, 1882. THE TOBACCO MAEKET. DEED LEAF AMD HAVANA. Fer the Week Ending Saturday, April 8, 10 A. M. V ti 1 ted States Tobacco Journal. There is a mystery somewhere. The leaf market remains exceedingly dull ; the cigar manufacturers' actually whine that business is inactive, and new comes the report of the Second and Third New Yerk revenue collection districts Ter the month of March, in which we observe a surpris ingly large gain in collections from cigars compared with the previous month and al.--e the month ef.Mareli, 1881. It shows an increase of ever eight million cigars. Improbable as it will appear, there can be but the following solution of this strange exhibit : Manufacturers, wanting te avoid strikes, claim a continuous dullness in business ; they also keep away from the market in order net te incite tee great ra pacity en the part of the holders of new tobacco. We repeat these conclusions seem improbable, but who can make bet ter ones ? If in face of an unsettled tax question and tenement-house cigar manu facturing agitation and the deplorable con dition of the Seuth, such a large increase in revenue could take place, hew great or enormous will be the increase when these questions ait! settled, which, as it appears, will be the case seen ? The conclusion is forced upon one that the manufacture of cigars in this country during 1882 will be far ahead of that of the previous years, and that consequently packers of suit able leaf will make line profits en their investments. The sales of the week were :ts fellows : Pennsylvania Crep '80 : 000 cases ; low and medium running, 13 te 19 cents ; wrappers, JJ8 te 40 cents. Connecticut Crep "80 : 200 cases wrap pers, e0 te 45 cents. Ohie Crep 80 : 700 ca&cs, mostly for expert, at 4J te G cents. Havana Active Sale 1,100 bales, mostly '81 Kemedies, at 87$ cents te $1 in vegas. Tobacco Taxes. Leat. The cigarette manufacturers want their tax reduced te fifty cents per thousand, and have this week sent a geed represen tative te Washington te tell the commit tee en ways and means se. The national manufacturer' association, of this city, ha decided net te urge Con gress te reduce the cigar tax te four dol lar per thousand, but only te request that the question of the tax be speedily set tled. Recent movements in Congress have impressed many persons with the idea . that the tobacco tax question will be re vived before the clese of the present ses sion. This idea ought te be dismissed as unfounded at once. Gans'a Repert. Sales of seed leaf tobacco reported by .1. S.
