A , in Gcrmantewu Telegraph. In Western Texas and California opos sums are found, though thej are by no means very numerous. I have seen aud killed them en the open plains when thcr vrere runuing toward a place of conceal ment. In soieo respects these animals are singular and worthy of notice. Iu size they are about a feet long, with a long prehensile tail that is hard and naked. Their bodies are reuud, the fur long and of a grayish color or rather the hairs arc with black ends ; the eyes small, ears round, membranous and naked ; the claws en the feet blunt, except the inner one en the hind feet, there being five en each feet. It is said te have fifty teeth. The gait of the animal is slew, except when en the trees, where it becomes very lively. It is solitary iu its habits, except when tear ing a family. Its feed consists of nuts, berries, roots, tender snoots, young buds, eggs aud insects. It is very expert at climbing and when encu m a tree loves te haug by its tail with its head down. When caught it sometimes appears as if dead, being lolled up aud literally "playing possum."' In this condition it will hubniit te considerable torture boferc it will manifest any signs of life. The The female has seven ter eijjht young ones, which when born arc net larger than honey bees. The little creatures are con veyed iu a sack or pouch iu freut of the mother, where each one hangs en te a teat and are thus carried about by her. The young increase in size very rapidly while thus bunging en te the teats. When about five weeks old they aie as large as a mouse and then leave the pouch, running back te it, however, en the approach of dan ger, or wheu they wish for feed. The mother is very fend of her little ones, aud carries them about with her, they twist ing their tails round her and clinging te various parts of her body. The females commence having young when they arc a year old, and have three or four litters every year. The negrees of the Seuth arc remarkably fend of the flesh of these animals, which is said te resemble that of a pig. The Ir.di ans, tee, cat them whenever they can catch them. Tin hipd feet is shaped very much like the human hand, aud they read ily grasp anything with it. Its prehensile tail, its hand aud thumb and the pouch iu which the femalu carries her young, are the remarkable peculiarities of the opos sum. It may be fed and tamed like a do mestic animal, but eveu then does no; make a nice pet. It creates disgust by its bad odor, stronger and mere offensive than that of the fox. Its figure also is forbid ding, for independently of its cars, which resemble these of au owl ; of its tail which is like that of a snake, and of its mouth which is cleft te the very eyes ; its body always appears dirty, because the hair is neither smooth nor curled, but tarnished, as if covered with dirt. The bad odor of the animal is in the skin, as the ilesh is excellent. It is ?e tenacious of life that it has given rise te a saying, that ' if a cat has nine lives an oppessum has nine teen." When disturbed, the female, if she has young, opens her mouth very wide, dis closing all of her teeth, and thus awaits the attack. She does net attempt te bite until her enemy is about te seize held of her, when she closes her teeth firmly upon it. At the same time the little ones, if they have attained any size, either exhibit their Mgns of defiance, lake refuge in the pouch of the mother, or, clinging te the various parts of her body, hide tlieir little faces in her long hair. The opossum has few friends, and many enemies ; the rapa cious animal? of the forests killing it upon every occasion ; and the eagles, hawks and owls tearing it te pieces, and feeding ou its llesh. White, black, and jed men, never let it escape, and are ready te seize it whenever an opportunity offers. Their nests are built near the roots of trees, but poorly concealed, and for this reason suffer mere than they otherwise would. Ne meat en earth is se highly prized by the colored people of the Seuth as that of the opossum. It is related that a pr( s'dent of Liberia once visited the United States, and while here becanie very sick. There was a general wasting away of his system, and he seemed almost ou the verge of eternity. IIe was visiting the home of a friend one day, when he smelt the aroma of an opossum, that the domestics were cooking. Instantly his whole demeanor changed, aud he begged' of his host (e let him have some of 'it, as he felt that it would de him geed, lle tasted it in fact he ate the whole of tha opossum aud from that day became a well man The president was born aud reared iu the Southern states, where he had frequently ate opossums wheu he was a boy, aud the recollection of old times te 'ether with the delicious Haver of the opossum cured him at once. I was euce traveling near the Guida lupe river, in Texas, when I saw an opos sum making his way ever the prairie, a sheit distance oil". I instantly gave chase, aud a few reds running brought me up te him. I was about te sheet him with my pistol when he commenced " playing 'pos sum," and I struck him ever the head, killing him. I took him te the ranchc where I was stepping, a few miles away, and the negrees had orders te cook him for breakfast. Herning came, but there was no opossum. Search was instituted, and the colored cook said the cat had car ried off the animal during the night. The fact was the negrees had eaten him them selves, their appetites having get the bet ter of their honesty. There is a plantation proverb iu these words, " Don't fall out wid de pet wet cook de 'possum." Te which might be added, never trust a colored man with an opossum. The opossums of Texas are known as Diddplns CaUfernica, (Benuett) while these of the north are called Yiryiaiuna, the difference being very little between the two. These animals are the only lepre sentatives of the marsupial in North aud Seuth America. By niatsnpial is meant ene of the nuirsuplulia, a mnmifureus quadiuped, the female of which has a pouch, which serves as a temporary abode for her young, as the kangaroo and oyes sum. It appears that these animals vary considerable in s'ze, some being as small as mice, while ethers are as large as cat1-. They live en mice, beetles, birds, worms, snails and things of that kine mat nicy find scattered about, and love te get into trees where their long prehensile tails help them ereatly. They have the power of winding the tail round a limb aud hang ing with their heads downward, which enables them te see all parts of a tree ; and the young ones wind their tails round that of their mother te prevent their fall ing off. The little ones are quite nimble, but net enough se te go about without the assistance of the parent. Besides the insects, birds, etc., that the opesiuiin cats, it is also fend et liuit, and in fact of almost anything, being truly omnivorous. There are several species in Seuth America, some of which have no pouch. The skins have become an itn pertant article of commerce, but exactly in what manner I am unable te say. When Virginia was discovered by white meu aud when it was settled, of course there were mauy wild animals found that wcre strange te the Europeans. It took some time te become acquainted with them, but when ence they had gained a knowledge of them, aud the meat of the opossum was feuud te be geed, the animal took rank among these entitled te respect ; this was especially the case among the sons of Africa who were brought in as slaves. There is no telling what a Southern colored man will net de te get possession of au opossum . Ilis dream of happiness is centred in a great measure in this animal, and without the delights of '"pos sum fat " few places could be found allur ing enough for his paradise. His eyes roll in a sort of ecstasy when talking about it, and his whole frame swells with desire. It was foitunate that the pteple, who were at times considerably pressed for previsions, found se welcome an addi tien te their store of feed, as it makes up in quality what it lacks in quantity. The weeds iu certain localities fairly swarmed with them, aud there was no trouble iu cantuiiug them after they were ence dis covered. It is no wonder the negrees are never tired of singiug their praises. The fame of the Texas opossums has net spiead very lar, although theie are people in that state who think as much of tke animal as de people of ether sections. There is se much wild game in that favor ed locality that the opossum has no par ticular prominence. I cannot find that " Uncle Remus "' has much te say about the animal under consideration, which is somewhat strange, as he is net behind hand usually in giving his peculiar views iu regard te ether mamalsand birds. This mammal, tee, plays an important paitinthe domestic life et the negre, aud it would seem as if he ought te have given him a geed notice, while doing se much for his ether friends aud acquaintances. Audubeu says : " Suppose the farmer has surprised au oppessum in the act of killing ene of his best fowls. His angry feelings urge him te kick the peer beast which, con scious of its inability te resist, rolls off like a ball. The mere the farmer rages the inore reluctant is the animal te mani fest lesistaucc ; at last there it lies, net dead, but exhausted, its jaws open, its eyes dimmed ; and there it would lie until the bottle lly should come te deposit its eggs, did net its tei mentor walk off. ' Surely,' hays he te himself, ' the beast must be dead.' But no, reader, it is only 1 'pesstiraing,' and no sooner has its enemy withdrawn than it gradually gets en its legs and ence niore makes for the weeds." The stories are endless that are told about these animals, some of them being quite iuteicsting, and certainly no animal in the world can feign death se well or bear se much abuse while sham ming. It is refreshing te hear a Virginian tell ing about catchiiij- opossums in a grove of persimmon trees, then taking them home, scalding them se as te get the hair off. and then having them roasted like a young pig. IIe is only outdeno by the Missou Misseu rian who fairly revels in the stories of the number he has taken in the lands west or Springfield, where one gentlemau told me he had taken eighteen in a night when he was a boy. The animals have great fond ness for paw paws and black haws, aud while hanging with their heads down iu the darkness he would suddenly steal up en them, when they would let go their held and drop in the underbusb, whero they weie seen captured. IIe told me of crossing a stream ence with another lad, they having .succeeded in capturing a number, wheu the bridge they were en gave way, and boys, poles and opossums all went swimming down stream, and it was with considerable difficulty that they themselves get ashore. " 'Possum and sweet potatoes " is a dish that has pecu liar charms te Southern men that have been reared in the country, and if properly prepared by an old negre cook is in fact as appetizing as can be imagined. I think it is claimed that only a colored roeok cau de justice te an op jssum and bring out all the peculiar excellence of tLe meat. TKAVKI.LING AS MERCHANDISE. Hexing lllinselt up and Starting for Phila delphia, but Landing in Jail. Three weeks age Jehn HcAuIcy, an old and well-known citizen of Chicago, who is of an eccentric aud jocular disposition, conceived the idea of boxing himself up and obtaining transportation te Philadel phia as merchandise He was informed by the agent of the Adams express company that he could go iu a box, but that he would have te p;iy passenger fare. Hc AuIcy declared Unit he would go as merchandise, and would pay no mere than $2.50 per hundred. He boxed himself up with a week's previsions by his side, and was t.tken by au expressman te the office. The box was 18 inches wide, 6 feet long, hoeped with iron bauds and ornamented with a padlock. The ngent was told that it contained llewers. It was addressed te Hiss Kisselman, Philadelphia. The box was forwarded te its destination, the charges having been prepaid. Toward morning the messenger discovered the old man, aud when the train stepped at Van Wert, Ohie, he turned him ever te the au au theiitic. who put him iu jail. The express elliccis wonder that the messenger did net sheet HcAulcy for a train robber. The old man was shipped home. A Smeeth Completion can be had ly every lady who will use Parker's GingerTenic.
