SPRlAO HAS COME.
' The primrose In the valley blooms,
The snow-drop awinn Its silent bells;
The willow droops Its tangled plumes,
The maple's tutted blossom swells ;
Leng weeps of tender grass ascend
The hillside towards the melting snows,
And where the climbing patches end,
Full-flowered the low nrbutns blows.
A'duller sense than mine should leel
The stir In nature's warming soul;
It makes the shouting bluebirds reel,
And bursts the violet's twisted scroll.
O biilleii darkness el the heart !
O irultless torpor et the brain !
When will your clouds and frosts depart,
When shall I come te llle again V
Oeo. H. Bektr.
Odds and Ends.
Au Irish lady cemplimented the Em
press of Austria en the beauty, of her
eyes, and the Empress replied : " The peer
eyes ! It is a wonder there is any lustre
leit in them. If you only knew what
floods et scalding tears have poured from
them !"
The Duchess of Madrid (Den Carles'
'wife) sent te Reme a magnificent cope,
embroidered by her own hands, as a pres
ent te the Pepe. When the box arrived
at the Vatican it was found te be filled
with rags, the precious cope having been
stolen in transit en the railway.
Mrs. Tyler was the only lady ever mar
ried in the White Heuse te a president.
Jacksen was a widower during his entire
presidential term; Fillmore married his
second wife after his retirement ; Buchanan
was the only bachelor president, and Ar
thur is yet a widower.
The May Century is te have a brilliant
list of contributors. Themas Carlyle,
James Russell Lewell, Edmund Clarence
Stedman, W. D. Hewells, Mrs. Frances
Hodgsen Burnett, Archibald Ferbes, Cen.
stance Fefinimore Woolson, Jehn O. Saxe,
Frank R. Stockton, Edward Everett Hale,
Andrew Lang, Richard Grant White,
" Uncle Remus." and H. C. Buuner, are
names known iu many fields of literature.
Elihu Yedder furnishes the second, of his
cover designs for special numbers, and the
frentispiece portrait of James Russell
Lewell is said te be an excellent likeness.
A prominent manufacturing firm in
Massachusetts has recently subscribed for
mere than three hundred copies of St.
Nicholas, te ba sent te the children of its
empleyes. They were paid for from a
lund which had been set aside ler educa
tional purposes. The May number of this
magazine will have sonic special features
in the way of illustrations which will sur
pass anything that St. Nicholas has done
heretofore.
A Bosten correspondent of the Chicago
Advance writes: "Rhede Island is the
only one of the New England states that
does net observe a day or last, 1 he sug
gestion is made every year that the an
nual fast come upon Geed Friday. The
old Piuitans have hitherto objected te
this en the ground that their day was a
high day, and they could net consistently
come under the banner of the 'Church'
calender. It is well known that our state
fast has ceme te be a 'high-day,' iu a
very bad sense. And new the pious
churchmen turn upon the suggestion te
blend the two days into one, and puncture
it with the keenest sarcasm.by saying their
Geed Friday is a sacred day te the church
aid they de net wish te see it desecrated
and destroyed by the unbridled license
and leveleries of the state annual fast."
Dr. Berates ou Dr. Bliss.
St. LeuW Glebe Democrat.
Dr. Bliss', retention in the case was
caused by a misunderstanding between
the president and Mrs. Garfield en the one
side, and Dr. Baxter and myself en the
ether ; and I can say also that the misun
derstanding was brought about purposely
and solely by Dr. Bliss himself. It'was
what he had said te Dr. Baxter and my
self that induced us te believe that it was
the wish of the president and Mrs. Gar
field that he should continue in charge of
the case. He, en the ether hand, gave
the president and Mrs. Garfield reason te
believe that it was the desire of J)r. Bax
ter and myself that he should be contin
ued iu charge, aud the contrary was net
known for months afterward. The man
ner in which Dr. Bliss managed this part
of the business was questionable in the
extreme. Since that time, however, Dr.
Baxter, Mrs. Garfield and myself com
pared notes, and new each of us under
stands the matter thoroughly, and under
the circumstances, I conceived it te be no
mere than my duty te make a plain state
ment in writing, setting forth all the fore-
going points, then have Mrs. Garfield en
derse them as knowing them te be true as
far as she was personally concerned.
Household Market.
There were full markets te-day at the Ccn
tral and Fanners' Northern, and net many
changes in prices. Butter went off at 40c per
pound, eggs 20c per dozen, and poultry was
scarce and high; dressed chickens selling
readily at 5006'c each, and lire ones scarce at
any price. Spinach, salad and ether early
greens were were plentiful without change in
price, snad were larger and lower in price ;
ether llsh unchanged. The butchers made an
unusually line display el meats of all kinds at
I lie usual prices. Wc quote as fellows :
