SOME SENSATIONS.
HOW A SLACGHTEK, WAS AVERTED.
An Accident That Wenld Have Cast Inte
tb Shade the Spavtea Duyvll Horrer
On the Bingbamten and Syracuse' branch
of the Delaware, Lackawana & Western
railroad, between Cortland, N. Y., and
Hemer, is a lone and very high trestle-
work, ever which trains usually .travel at
f a very geed speed. About eue-qnarter of
mile te the north of this bridge the wagon
read cresses the railroad track from the
west te the east ami, thence runs parallel
with it in a southerly direction. The
ether evening a driver of a lager beer
wagon was returning te Cortland with a
lead of empty bottles. Being very
much intoxicated, he mistook the railroad
for the turnpike and drove along
the track until he came te the trestle.
There the horses found it difficult te move,
owing te the wide spaces between the
cress timbers. They, however, succeeded
in advancing ever the work about twenty
five feet when their legs slipped through
and they were firmly fastened in the struc
ture. The sudden shock of the falling
horses seems te have sobered up the
driver, for he immediately made all haste
across the trestle and ran te Cortland, a
distance of nearly two miles. He evi
dently fell many times en his way, as liis
face was much bruised- when he reached
the depot. He told the operator in
a maudlin way that his horses
and wagon were stuck fast in the
bridge en the north track. In this he
made a mistake, for it was en the southern
track that his team lay. The train that
left Syracuse at 7:10 p. m. was due at the
bridge in a few minutes, se that there
was no time te be lest. It reached Hemer
en time, and, after taking en the passen
gers for the Beutb, the conductor signalled
the engineer te start. Ne ene en the train
or in that station then knew that in but a
few minutes mere the portals of eternity
would open for perhaps all en beard. The
engineer worked his lever and was just
preparing te open the throttle valve when
the window of the telegraph office llew
open, and-the operator yelled for him. te
step. The conductor immediately rushed
into the station and was told what he
would have met had be net heard the
warning cry of the manat the telegraphic
instrument. The train was moved slowly
te the bridge, and the blight light
of the head lamp disclosed what
would have without a doubt caused
one of the most terrible railroad dis
asters en record. It was with great diffi
culty that the horses were extricated and
the wagon thrown down the slope from
the track, and the train reached Cortland
nearly fifty minutes late. After the
drunken driver, who came se near being
the cause of a great less of life, told his
story he started te return te where his
team lay. He did net .reach there, how hew how
ever, for he was found asleep en tbe same
track a short distance from the trestle,
having evidently tripped en a switch frog,
and was unable te get up again. The
most wonderful part oft the affair is hew
the man, se terribly under the influence
of liquor as net te be able te recognize
the difference between driving ever the
rough roadbed of the railway and the
smooth turnpike, ceuldf cress the trestle
work and give timely warning of the mis
hap! Ten seconds later the telegraph
would have spoken te no purpose, and the
death or several hundred, persons would
have been recorded.
SWINDLING A BEAUTIFUL WIDOW.
liew the " Bube et Leicester " Courted and
Basely Deceived a San Francisce Lady.
The San Francisce Chronicle tells a
strange conspiracy story in which the
" Duke of Leicester " and a Mrs. Etna
Bennett are the principals. Mrs. Bennett
had been told by two lady friends that the
' Duke," traveling in California as " Dr.
Geerge Legan," had fallen in love with
her while she was presiding at a patent
medicine stall at the Jlechauics' Pavilion
fair, San Francisce. She was led te be
lieve that it was customary for the
"nobles of Great Britain," when they
paid marked attention te a lady with the
intention of conferring upon her the proud
distinction of sharing their titles, te con
duct the negotiations through the medium
of a friend, who, in this instance, appeared
te be a " Dr." Barten with the two ladies
referred te. Preparations for the wedding
were made by Mrs. Bennett, and also by
the " Duke," who wrote her a bushel of
letters full of Biblical quotations, poetry
and love. The " Duke,'' by the way, had
at ene time been requested by the quean te
marry ene of the royal princesses, but had
declined te de se for reasons net given
Her Majesty, however, hearing of ' His
Grace"s " engagement te this San Fran Fran
ciseo beauty, sent her a cashmere shawl
worth $1,000, or rather the " Duke " said
he had received it for her. Three minis
ters were te be employed at tbe wedding,
and the principal bridesmaid was te be
thewife of a leading San Francisce phy
sician. The wedding presents which the
"Duke's" agents eaid he had bought
were marked "Etna-Leicester," and were
of surpassing beauty. The bride was te
be attired in the rich laces which had
graced the fair forms of the noble
"Duke's " mother and grandmother. The
wedding having been put off from time te
time, Mrs. Bennett grew uneasy and in
sisted upon seeing tha " Duke, " but Bar Bar
eon told her that he was lying very ill at
Vallejo. Then it was represented that
the duke had taken a great fancy te one
of Mrs. Bennett's shawls, believing that if
it were only wrapped about his shoulders
it would have a very salutary effect. Be
lieving this, she surrendered the coveted
garment. It was also said that he desired
te have sent te him a breastpin stab had
worn at the pavillien, his intention being
te have a similar one designed and set
with costlier stones. This was also given
up. Under the impression that when she
became the " Duchess of Leicester " she
would possess the costly wardrobe pre
pared for her, she gave te the two ladies
most of her private wardrobe and effects.
At length, after waiting seven months for
"His Grace," Mrs. Bennett began te think
that she had been swindled, and she swore
out warrants for the arrest of Barten and
her lady friends, Mrs. Fannie Clark and
Mrs. Julia Tayler, mother and daughter.
Barten had fled, but the women were ar
rested and held for trial.
TATTOOED FEMININITY.
A Yeung Uidy Whose Skin is Covered with
Curlously-werkea Figures.
. Captain Censtantenus, the tattooed man
has new a formidable rival in the person
of a similarly adorned lady. The lady in
question is Miss Irene Woodward, whose
fair white skin is covered in every part by
ingeniously tattooed figures. Miss Wood
ward at the Sinclair house, New Yerk,
was seated in ene of the parlors, dressed
in a handsome pair of trunks, a silk,
bodice and silk shoes. Te a casual obser
ver she appeared te be mere fully attired,
but, upon a closer inspection, what looked
like gauzy apparel, proved te be figures
punctured in the flesh.
The tattoo work is really artistic. Each
of the numerous figures is clearly defined
and excellently drawn, being well shaded
and altogether quite accurately designed.
Ne general plan has been observed in the
peculiar work. Te variemi fijrares really
have no connection with one another, and
the whole presents a study which -cannot
fail te interest.
Ne figures are upon the face. About
the neck is a garland of flowers about
which hover butterflies. Upen each
shoulder is a representation of the setting
and innumerable stars are worked en dif
ferent parts of the skin. A beehive is
worked upon the left arm, around which
is fluttering a swarm of bees. Over tbe
hive is " Never Despair," and " Nothing
without Laber" is under it. The right
arm eears an American eagle with the in
scriptions, "I live andtUe for these I leve.1'
A harp enclosed in shamrock, hands in
the grasp of friendship, wreathes of flowers
and curious devices are also worked upon
this arm. On different parts of the body
are' figures representing Faith, Hepe and
Charity, a sailor leaving home, Atlas,
birds, rabbits, the Goddess of Hepe,
angels, swans pursued by a swimming
boy, a wheat field, two ships in action, the
sailor's return, and an -Indian's bead and
numerous ethers.
Curious as it may appear, the tattoeiug
was done by Miss Woodward's father. It
was commenced when she was about six
years of age, at which time she was trav
eling with her brethqr and father in Mex
ico. A few stars were the first figures
made as marks' of identity. The ethers
were worked at different times during the
remaining three years. Such is the state
ment made by the young lady.
She said, in speaking of her early career,
that she did net remember her mother, or
where she lived, except that it was in a
large city. She acoempanied her father
and brother en a voyage, and finally ar
rived in Mexico, where they traveled about
the country, and after year went te Col Col
orado where her father was killed, and
her brother died some time age.
Miss Woodward has never befere been
exhibited. The figures are all indellibly
marked upon the skin, and the girl must
have gene through a terrible ordeal.

What the World Is New Experiencing.
N. T. Sun.
The recent terrible earthquake in -Cesta
Rica recalls again the fact that we are new
witnessiug ene of the most remarkable
periods of terrestrial disturbance that has
ever been recorded.
The fact that we hear of se many miner
earthquakes, mure tremblings and shak
ings which cause mere or less alarm with
out doing much damage, may be owing te
the system of observation that has re
cently been adopted. The study of earth
quake phenomena as a special branch of
science is comparatively new, and the men
who have established what may be de
scribed as earthquake observatories, or
rather observing stations, at various points
en the glebe de net allow any tremor' of
the ground, however slight, te go un
noticed. But besides the many slight shocks that
have been felt in almost every country,
there have been, within a year or two,
several destructive earthquakes, the like
of which the world, fortunately, does net
frequently see. In November, 1380, oc
curred the great earthquake shock at
Agram. About a year age, in this same
month, Casamicciela was destroyed. A
month later followed the still mera terri
bio disaster at Chies. .Shocks of less in
tensity were felt at times at both Agram
and Chies during the whole of last year,
and the disturbance has net even yet ceased
altogether.
It was hardly te be expected that the
Central American countries, crowded
with volcanoes and forming ene of the
great centres of earthquake commotion,
would escape a shaking, and the recent
disaster in Cesta Rica is, therefere, net a
matter of surprise. Mere than a year age
there was evidence of the struggle of in
ternal forces in that region when the sur
prising phenomenon of a small volcano
bursting out of the middle of a lake was
witnessed at Ilopango, in San Salvader. .
Disastrous shocks have, within the last
two years, been experienced in two or
three of the principal carthquake regions
of the glebe, namely, the Mediterranean
region and tbe narrow waist of the West
ern continent. In the East Indies tbere
has -been no great disaster within this
time, but further north, in the interior of
China, earthquakes have caused great
less of life and property within twelve
months.
It is lucky for New Yerk, especially in
view of the present towering style of
building in vouehere, that the city stands
upon a mass of rock that seems te be Ace
from earthquake influences.
ANUERSONVILLE.
Benring en Stanten's Policy and Grant's
Doctrine of " Attrition. "
N. e. Times' Letter.
Soen after the fall of Atlanta an agree
ment was made with Sherman and Heed
te exchange 2,000 men. The point desig
nated fur making the exchange was Rough
and Heady, a station en the Macen and
western read, midway between Jones Jenes
borough, where Heed was, and Atlanta.
Cel. Gus. Henry and Ed. Austin, of the
staff, and myself were detailed for the ser
vice. The requisite number were brought
up from Andersonville and marched te
Rough and Ready,, when we met Cel. Wm.
Warner (afterward carpet-bag Senater
from Alabama ), of Sherman's staff, ac
companied by 2,000 of the boys in gray.
Just before leaving Jonesborough we re
ceived a dispatch in the following words :
" Richmond, , 18.
" Tender every prisoner at Andersonville
even if the Federal commander will de no
mere than premise te deliver an equal
nnmber at any time in the future.
" Jeffersen Davis, President."
( I forget the precise date of the tele
gram, but remember, aud have reason te,
its every word.)
We happened te have 20 federal soldiers'
tee many and it took us an hour te per
suade Warner te receive the excess. After
the exchange was made I said te War
ner :
"Colonel, we are authorized by our
president te tender you every man of
yours new imprisoned at Andersonville ;
and that you may perfectly understand
me, I will show you the authority." With j
that 1 banded him the dispatch, which he
carefully read, handed back and said :
" We cannot de that. It is net policy
en our part. Yen see the time of every
man we have at Andersonville has ex
pired ; all we held of yours have either en
listed or have been conscripted ' for the
war. The men we have given you te day
we will have te fight te morrow. The
men you have given us will never be in
our ranks again. We are thus making the
Andersonville prisoners serve the Union
cause against theirs and your will."
Here was the whole truth let ent by this
Federal colonel. It covered the policy of
the United States government, and if they
suffered starvation or extreme hunger,
the Andersonville prisoners have their own
government alone te blame for it. The
truth is, in these days it required extraor
dinary exertions te keep our own men fed.
And it should net be forgotten that while
26,000 Confederates died in prison, only
24,000, Federal prisoners died during the
war.
