The transactions of the week were
small. The uncertainty of the tax ques

market. New that it has been set at rest
leliuitely, we may expect a revival of
business. A transfer of a packing -of '81
l'eunsylvania is reported, but it is claimed
that it is but part of a transaction made
at the beginning or the packing season by
the mrties interested- The .sales of the
week are giveu as 700 cases, consisting
mainly of '81 Pennsylvania, Connecticut

Testing Tobacco" Seeds.
c Country Gentleman.
It is mere necessary te te.st tobacco
tceds before sewing the plant bed than
any "ether seed planted by the farmer.
They are very small and easily affected by
extreme cold and moisture, and by frost,
after being sewu. Take a small picce of
cotton batting, wet it thoroughly, and
place iu a teacup or goblet, and scatter
thereon half a teaspoonful of tobacco
seeds. The cotton should be kept moist
with tepid water, and if the seed is geed
it will sprout in a few days. I de uet re
gard this, however, as a sure test, for I
have been unable te germinate seed iu this
way which sprouted wheu sewn in the
plant bed. Old seed vf ill sprout sooner
than new, and is by mauv prclerred. The
question is often asked at what age te
bacce seed loses its power te germinate. I
have heard many auswers te this question.
Seme seedsmen and growers say at 10
years; ethers af20. The largest grower
of tobacco seed iu this country, who deals
ii. only ene variety (White Hurleigh), and
harvested last season 5,000 pounds of to te to
bacce, claims te have grown the crop from
seed 13 years old. Majer Kagland, of
Virginia, who doubtless experts mero to
bacco seed than auy ether grower or seed
firm in this country, and whose crop aver
ages from 30 te CO bushels yearly, thinks
that very old seed may be sewn.
Anether way te test the seed is te threw
a little into the fire or en the stove. If it
snaps itssaidte be geed ; if it does net,
it is called peer. It is a common custom
new with many growers net te sew dry
seed, scattering it directly from the hand
or mixed with ashes, plaster, sand or
loam, en the plant bed, hut te partially or
wholly sprout it iu the house before sow sew
ing it en the bed. There are. se many
ways of preparing the seed in this manner
that I cannot describe them all, but will
allude ten few of them. The plan recent
ly adopted of taking two or mero sods
about the -size of a common shovel, and
about two .or tliree inches thick, and
sprinkling seed npeu it, is a very geed
way, and is said te be almost a sure
method of ascertaining the germinating
power of the seed. Meisten the back of
the sod with tepid water, and thcu scatter
seed thereon ; place in a warm loom and
cover with a light cloth.
The betters ay te sprout the seed (I
think) ig te obtain from the trunk of a de
cayed apple tree a quantity of rotten weed
(that which is fine and light) and place in
a shallow -box or old milk pan and mix the
seed well with the weed mould. Meisten
and keep iu a warm place. If the seed, is
geed it will be sure te germinate. Be
careful net te sew tee early, since after
sprouting, the yeuug seedlings grew very
fast, and often if tee forward when being
.sewn in the bed, break and are thcreby
damaged. At the south some growers
sew the seed iu the plant patch in the fall,
and we have known growers in the Con
necticut valley te de the same.but it is net
the common way and we can hardly advo
cate the practice. Our growers de net
usually make plaut beds enough ;
some sew only one bed, aud if that one
fails te yield plants, we are forced te buy
or beg, aud in either, case have te wait
until ethers have finished "setting."
Havana seed is likely "te come," and
when they once appear en the surface,
grew very fast. They literally crowd one
another in the bed and grew less " stocky"
or spreading than seed leaf plants.
