The Cleak Man There Are Twe or Tnree
or Them.
Many Columbians ridicule the report
that there is a cloak man running around
our streets at night. It is a f.ict. We had
the misfortune te meet him .nc night, but
being the fastest runner, we did net stay
te inquire his name. Xet only is thcie
one, but appearances indicate that there
are We or three of them. On Friday night
last as a young son of Mr. Wambaugh was
returning home, prepared te meet the
scoundrel, as lie says, with a large btone
in each hand, he was stepped, or i ather
assaulted. Net caring te held any con
versation with his assailaut, he let 11 y one
of the stones striking the cloak man fairly
en the head, and with sufficient force. In
stead of following up the advantage gain
ed, he took te his heels in a direct line for
home. His head must have been badly
cut as a considerable amount of bleed was
found en the pavement next day. The
following Saturday night a railroad
man was stepped, but instead of
running away, laid down his bucket
and Limp, and i)ild upon him in
such a manner tint after getting several
blows in his face, the cloak man took te
his heel.-. This occurred en Second street
about 9 o'clock, yet another man was
stepped en Third and Chestnut street at
the same hour. The reason we say theic
must be mere than one of these ruffians
about is, tLat it i. hardly possible for a
man te get his hc:id cut one niht and
again go forth, and also tlr.it one man can
not be seen in two places at the same time.
We de net publish this aiticlc with the in
tention of intimidating anybody, but that
our boieugh is infested with a cleukman
or cleakmen is the truth, for our iufoim iufeim
ants veracity cauuet be doubted. We
merely make public mention of it se that
steps will be taken te have him arrested
and give him the full penalty of the law.
ICIrllitlity Surprise.

naded him, was invited in and partook
from a table le.'.ded with' luxuiie?. He

The pleasures which Columbians may
enjoy this week arc : this evening, the
entertainment in the Mt. Zieii A. M. IS.
church ; Wednesday cveuini.', a spelling bee
at Drytewu ; Thursday evening, m
Hague's British minstrels, and the com

Friday evening, three surprise p.utief,
names of places net given, and Saturday
evening, the "Library's" entcitainment
in the opera house, which premises, by
the way, te be the liuest home talent ex
hibition ever given heie.
Impure Water.
Will anything be done in icgard te the
condition of the impurity of the water
stated te council by Chief Burgess Sncatli '.'
It is certainly impure, and there is that
taste and smell about it that denotes all is
net right. Council has been doing geed
work, except net giving Witteis the epeia
house at a lower price, and should con
tinue se by demanding of the water com
pany a thorough inspection of the reser reser
veiis and a cleaning of the same. De it at

THE PK1SOX TKOCBLKS.
llie Case" of Gee. Klunuu Before Aid. Wiley.
Tim ease of "Geenre Ehman. the
baker at the county prison, who is charged
by rnsen-neeper uurKueiucr wuu wu
spiring with Leenard Schcenberger, a con
vict, te commit a larceny of cigars from
the prison, was heard before Alderman
Wiley this morning.
The testimony presented by the com
monwealth was substantially the same as
that taken by Alderman Spurrier last week
at the healing of the case of
larceny charged asrainst Schajnberger.
The witnesses were Mr. and Mrs. Burk
holder. Under Keeper Albert Murr, and
Jere. Cooper, the prison salesman. The
finding et Elimau's satchel containing 400
cigars in the barrels of potato sprouts
outside the prison walls, where the refuse
from the kitchen is usually carried, was
rather mere fully explained. The prison
stable is outside the pri&eu : the'gate from
the prison yaid opens north near Orange
street net far from the east wall of the
prison yard. It was Ce open this gate
that Ehman get the keys from TJnder
keeper Mnir, who, as directed, notified
Keeper Burkhelder, and it was near this
gate that Ehman was seen by Burkhelder.
who was ea the watch, aud Schoenberger
was seen loitering after his discharge
from prison en the 1st of March, and from
which Burkhelder eidered him away bo be bo
feie the finding of the stolen cigars. It
was shown by the witness that Ehman had
-ceiitiul of the bake house and kitchen,
also of the bathroom and water-closet,
weie !.e and Schcenberger weie when Mrs.
Buikhelder overheard them talking about
the satchel. It was also shown that Eh
nran had no access te the cigar loom,
and that unstamped cigars could net
be taken from the room unless they
were stolen. Some meirirncnt was
evoked when Mr. Burkhelder in iudentify
ing the cigars said they were called " All
the go." It was proven that Schcenberger
was examined before his discharge from
jail and that he had no satchel when he
was passed out of the front gate. It was
proved that the valise in which the cigars
were found belonged te Ehman and that
he had leaned it te Schoenberger, and the
key te it was in Scbnonberger's possession
when he was arrested On cro3sexaniina cre3sexaniina cro3sexaniina
tien it was developed that nearly all the
menial work in aud about the prison is
done by prisoners seme of whom have
been sentenced te solitary confinement.
J. Hay Brown, esq., of counsel for Eh
man, inveighed severely agaiust the "re
form " prison keeper tints setting at defi
ance the sentence imposed upon convicts
by the ceuits.- This raised a wrangle
among opposing counsel and it was with
diificully that Mr. Burkhelder was after
wards enabled te get In an explanation iu
elfect that about 12.1 convicts have
been sentenced te solitary confine
ment ; that, theiu arc only .75 cells in
which te confine them ; that when he en
teied upon his duties en the 2d of January,
he found Schumbergcr and ether convicts
en duty in the bake-house, kitchen aud
ether depaiimcnts ; aud that he had left
them llicie. at the lequest of the beard of
inspecteis.
At the conclusion el the testimony sheit
speeches in behalf of the commonwealth
weie-made by E. K. Martin and II. M.
lerth csqs., counsel fei the commonwealth,
aud by J. L. Steinmetz, J. Hay Brown
aud S. II. Reynolds, esqs., for defendants
Alderman Wiley held both Sehrcnberger
aud Etonian in $500 bail te answer at court
the charge of conspiracy. Ehman furnished
the bail and Sehranbergcr in default of it,
went te jail.
Dr. Latusen's Case.
In the tii.il of Dr. Lamson, iu Louden
jesterdsy, his counsel, opening for tliede
fen.M', said he should put two prepositions
befoie the jury ; first, whether the de
ceased died from the effects of 'aconitine
and, second, whether the poison was wil
full v administered bv Dr. Lamson. He
declaicd thiit no proof existed r
that would enable the iurv te
decide either, affirmatively. The points
dwelt upon m the cress-examination el wit
nesses for the prosecution have been the
general ignorance concerning the effect of
aceuitiue, the feeble condition of the
health of the deceased, and the fact that,
notwithstanding his feeble condition, he
was able te move without assistanc ,
and se m::v have obtained access te
chemicals witii which it was known he
sometimes before death was in the habit
of amus'iig himself, aud among which
worn substances, which according te'
the testimony of experts, might
have produced symptoms similar te
aceuitiue. If Dr. Lamson escapes con
viction it must be from hick of evidence
rather than from pesitive proof of his in
nocence. Important scientific evidence will be
given by ciniuent physiologists te prove
that Mr. Stevenson's method of testing
acenite by taste is lalJacie.us. It will be
shown that delphinia aud ether vegetable
poisons have precisely the same taste. It
will a!.-e be shown that all alkaloids
found iu the human body after
death will poison the lower animals.
It will be shown, tee, that acenite is
extensively used in medical-practice en the
continent aud iu the United States for
cancer, diseases of the spine and ether dis dis
erdeis. It may be admitted that Dr. Lam
son administered acenite medically te the
boy, and an attempt will be made te show
that the boy was killed by the large doses
of merphia given him by the doctors who
treated him at the school. The prisoner
preserves his nerve, and appears te be
neither confident nor depressed.

- Durhanris a maritime county in ' the
north of England. . Its general aspect is
mountainous, particularly in the western
part, where it is traversed by th,at range
of hills te which the name of the English
Apennines has been 'applied. Numer
eus rivers, rising among the moun
tains in the west, flew through the
valleys and empty into the ocean.
Among these are the Tyne, the
Tees and the "Wear, all of which are navi
gable for a cqnsiderable part of thei.-
course, and have important towns and
fair harbors at their mouths. The valley
of the Tees, particularly near its estuary,
has a great deal of rich alluvial soil under
careful cultivation, or devoted te pastur
age. It is here that the Durham cattle,
se famous for their many excellent quali
ties, are most extensively reared. .In the
bleak table-lands of the western part.
where cultivation is uet attempted, are
found rich veins of lead, and cast of this
region occurs the most extensive coal field
of Great Britain, known as the Newcastle
coal region'. The capital city is Durham,
an historic old town, an ancient Episcopal
see, in external appearance at once attract
ive aud imposing and containing many
handsorae aud interesting edifices, castles,
cathedrals, educational institutions anil
the like. Priorte the opening of the col cel
leries and the construction of the numer
ous railways which new intersect the
county, Durham raade little material pro

great works gave a powerful interest te
trade and population. Eds. Iktelliren

Te-day's Proceedings n the Senate.
Washington, March 14. In the Senate
te-day Mr. Meri ill reported back the
Heuse bill discriminating duties ou tea
and coffee, the products of the possessions
of the Netherlands, with an amendment in
the nature of a substitute making the
measure a general one.
Mr. Harrison, from the military com
mittee, iu response te instructions te in
quire as te the propriety of increasing the
appropriation for relief of the sufferers by
the Mississippi floods, reported that the
committee was unable even te approximate
the number of such persons, the existing
difficulties of communication in the flooded
districts preventing them from discribut
iugsupplie. The secretary of war is of
the opinion that fifty thousand people
have been driven from their homes
and are in need of help. It
seems probable that relief must be ex
tended for at least sixty days te come.
The committee, however, declines te re
commend the- continuance of relief until
the destitute are able te maintain them
selves, preferring te leave the matter te
the voluntary action of the people.
The Autl-I'elygamy Ilill in tbe Heuse.
The dead-ioek in the Heuse en the
anti-polygamy bill was continued to
day. The Democrats insisted en having
time for debate and te be permitted
te offer amendments, but Haskell, who
had charge of the bill, renewed his motion
for the previous question, There was
great confusion iu the chamber.
After some further noisy discussion
it was agreed that The present legislative
day be continued until the hill is
dispe.-ed of ; that the bill be open te
amendment and debate under Hie live
minute ruin for one hour, and the previous
question then ordered, after which au ad
ditienal hour will he allowed (or bebate,
and the bill then voted upon.

Philadelphia, March 14. The annual
meeting of the stockholders of the Penn

iu reviewing the history of tlie company,
stated that nncc 1853, it had paid ever
$8,000,000 in dividends, or nine and a

Mr. Lockwood threatened te make revela

the company's affairs which would threw
the Nicholas Sope tractSexposure into the

solicitor the motion was withdrawn. The
leading of the report was then ceucluded.
Judge Perter offered a resolution ap
