TOBACCO.
THE LOCAL TKADK.
Getting Ready for the Sew Crep.
The past week has been comparatively
dull. A geed deal of baled leaf previous
ly beueht was delivered, but there were
net a gr&t many sales made. The farm
ers still bold out for high prices and the
buyers decline te pay them. Several deal
ers who bave bought heavily of the Lan
caster county crop shake their heads om
inously, and while they admit the tobacco
comes in in geed condition, they say
there is no money in it," they "paid tee
much for it." On the ether hand buyers
who have returned from Wisconsin ex
press themselves delighted with their pur
chases in that state having secured leaf
;is geed as that of Lancaster county at
much lower figures. Seme of the Wiscon
sin leaf is se line that Lancaster buyers
paid mere than $300 per acre for it.
In old tobacco no. sales worth mention
ing hive been made during the week.

Seed Beds.
The tiine has arrived when fanners
must piepaie their tobacco heed beds
some indeed have already done se and sewn
their seed: though a majority of them iu
this tectien of the state prefer te sew the
seed fiem the 10th of Maich te the 1st of
April. A piece- of rich mellow ground
should be selected with a southern expos
ure if possible, aud protected from north
cm winds by a close fence, a hedge or
building. The soil must be well manuied,
with finely composted barnyard manure,
or prepared hen manure, thoroughly pul
verized and mixed with five or six
times its bulk of ashes or read dust. One
tcaspoenful of seed if caiefully sewn, is
sufficient for a bed containing one hun
dred Equare feet. The most common and
perhaps the best method of sewing the
need, is te mix it thoroughly with a quart
or mere ei dust or ashes, and sew it care
fully and thinly ever the bed. Then press
down the soil Tightly with aboard or light
hand roller. The 'entire bed should be
covered lightly with hog bristles, if they
can be obtained, as experience has shown
that they afford the best protection te the
germ of the plant and the young plant
itself during late frosts. Where bris
tles cannot be had, the next best pro
tection te the plant bed is a cover of thin
inusliu stretched upon frames placed a few
inches above the ground, and se arranged
that thev may be removed from the bed'at
pleasure. The muslin coveting should net
be used except te protect the plaut from
injury from frost. Plants grown as much
as pessible in the open air are mere hardy
than these grown continuously under mus
lin or class. When the young plants are
well up. the bed should be carefully
weeded, and if there be parts of the bed
in which the seed has fallen tee clesely.
the plants themselves should be thinned
out ; and if there be vacant spots iu the
bed they cau be re-sewn aud thus a supply
of late plants may be had for resetting
places in the tobacco field made vacant
by the depredations of the cut worm or
ether cause. Farmers differ greatly as te
what is the best variety of seed ; but for a
few years past the " Glessucr variety has
perhaps ban the greatest number el ail
vocates in this county. Tobacco, like
corn, wheat potatoes aud ether larm pre
ducts, is improved by changiug the seed
occasionally : that is, by selecting a new
. tiiety or obtaining seed of the old vat iety
um plants crown at a distance from the
laee where it is te be sewn. Ne matter
.hat variety may be used care should be
t Vn te secure large,reuud well-developed
d. selected from the largest nods of
eng, healthy plants.
