James Shaw shot and killed his wife near here this morning. The parties have net lived together for some time, and this morning Shaw went te the house where Lis wife tired, and it it supposed committed the act in a (It of mgc. The murderer escaped." Shaw is well-known in this city and thioulieut the south eafctern part ofthe county, especially in Sadsbury, Bart and Celeraiu townships. lie is a man of about 50 years of age, an Iiishmau aud has a family of children of whom some are mar ried aud live in Philadelphia. Of late he and Ifis wife have had very serious disagreements, aud during the past year or longer he has been in this city very frequently consulting lawyers as te hew he could get back the prepertv which he deeded her some years age. The little farm which the Siiaws owned and formerly lived en was near Bartville, in lower Bart township. He claimed that he had deeded it te her when in finan cial difficulty aud new she refused te con con eoy it back ; and that his children in Phil adelphia sided with her. Hence their con tention. Seme time age, Mi. Shaw had him ar rested for diseideily conduct aud commit ted ta jail, but he was released en a habeas corpus. He was given somewhat te drink and was violent in manner and eccentric of disposition, Dut net the man of whom anyene would expect such a bloody deed as he seems te have carried out te-d-iy. His wife attempted te take it from him, when he turned en her and fired, the whole contents of the gun taking effect and causing death almost in stantly. Luth eran church quartctte choir has occasioned a generous rivalry among our chuch choirs which culminated en Saturday iu the re taining by the Methodist e! the services of Mr. Michael Schaibley, Lnier of the abeved named choir, at a fixed salary. The Lutherans have been equal te the emergency, and will en Saturday next re organize and furnish a neat little surprise in the way of tenor. Frank Kassar, an employee of the Lan caster watch factory, has been arrested en a charge of larceny. The facts of the case, as alleged, are te tne enect that the defendent for some time past, aided by some friends, has been secretly construct ing a watch from the material and with the tools belonging te the company. The watch was almost completed when it was given ever te an employee, who was te have done some work en it. He gave it te his boss, who informed Mr. Bitner of the facts. The latter brought suit before Aldermau Barr, and had Eassar arrested. He was committed for a hearing when mere will be learned concerning the case. Geerge Ehnian is the baker of the Lan caster county prison where lie has been for years D. K. Burkhelder, the new keeper, te-day made complaint against him before Alderman Wiley, charging him with having within the last three months conspired and confederated with one Leenard Sheenucrircr te commit larceny in the county prison. It will be remem bcied that Shecnberger was a convict at the prison and when discharged he took a let eC cigars with him, for which he was an csted lately. It will require a hearing te ascertain what is in the case against Eh in 111 and what grounds Burkhelder had for bringing the charge. E The new directors of this company, of which the franchises were lately bought at hhei ill's sale by the bondholders, and which has been lately reorganized, had a dinner and a conference at the Stevens house yesterday, at which a representative of the Philadelphia & Reading railroad interest was also present. They are all very close-mouthed about what took place. It has leaked out that Squire Samuel Eaby of Elizabethtown has offered $00,000 for the interest of the purchasers iu the read with a view te its speedy completion between Marietta and the Beading & Columbia read. Whether this scheme involves the co-operation of the Beading read is net known. At any rate it is ficcly given out that the read will seen be built, and the Marietta and Chique3 industries will have the benefit of competing freight rates. Jfale et Henes.
