Reviews or Lately Published Beeks.
The publisher of the North American
lieiiew has issued a pamphlet, of 142
pages, sold for 50 cents, containing the
late discussion en the Christian religion
by Judge Black. Robt. G. Ingersoll and
Rev. Dr. Gee. P. Fisher. It is a conve
nient form for the republication of a series
of articles that have great popular inter
cut. Wva. Black, the famous novelist, tries
his hand at juvenile writing. Ilis story
of " The Four MacNicels "the adven
tures of some sturdy Scotch boys, is in the
best vein of such authorship, and emi
nently the kind of a book for the home
and Sunday school library. Published by
Harper Bres. FremChas.H. Barr, Lan
caster.
The last publication in the scries of Wil
liam J. Relfe's Shaksperian plays is "The
Merry Wives of Winsder," uniform with
these which have preceded it, illustrated,
10 me. cloth GO cents and paper 40. The
text is carefully revised and authentic,
but pure and adapted for educational pur
poses, and the introduction, history and
comments en the play are carefully edited
by the commentator, whose edition is net
only one of the most scholarly and com
plete but altogether convenient and of fit
typography. Published by Harper Bre. 's .

The tendency of the age is te study his
tery through biography. The nearer bio
graphy comes te a personal revelation of
the inner life of its subject the mere inter
esting and valuable It becomes. Sometimes
ia questionable taste, but never lacking in
interest, are the memoirs, the diaries and
the correspondence of men who fill a large
space in public affairs. It is the minutiie
of BesweU's Jehnsen that se endears it te
the litterateur ; Pcpys' diary will always be
staudard ; Grevnille's memoirs give the
world a wonderful insight into the social
and political life of England during the
period which they cover ; and the me
moirs of Pr in co Mctteruicli, a close and
copious story of the great Chancellor's life,
private and public, brightly illumine the
story of the history of France. Vel. Ill,
of the edition in cloth, just published by
Harper &. Bre's. includes Heek VII of the
French edition and runs from 1830 te
18U5, dealing mainly with the July revolu
tion and its immediate consequences. The
diary of Princess Melanie, his third wife,
supplies largely the material for this vol
ume and she was a woman of such rare
gifts and brilliancy that, as she made her
salon a centre of influence, her diary fur
nishes material for a most interesting sec
tion of the important memoirs of her hus
band. Pp. i:t. Fer sale by Chas. II.

" Monsieur le Miuistre," an alleged ro
mance of real life is the last of the flood
of modern French novels which have been
translated aud published. In appearance
and style it is somewhat like the realistic
works of " Zela," but is less objectionable
te the purists than theic very fleshly
books. Unlike soma of the French novels
it scorns te have a moral purpose. The
cabinet minister who figures in the story
we can easily believe te be a real pcrson pcrsen pcrson
age in fact it would net be a strain en the
imagination te conceive him as an Ameri
can politician. The artful adven
turess figures all through the book,
the Parisian gallant, the merciless
journalist, tjie mercenary artist and the
passionate and revengeful Spanish duke.
Vice irets its punishment, even if there
is no virtue te be rewarded. Fer
these who like this sort of a book it is
very much the sort of a book they like.
It has ruu through forty editions in the
original and its translator has done his
work very well. Published by T. B. Pe Pe
tereon fc Bre., Philadelphia, and sold by
them or en the cars for te cents.
When the industrious editor aud the
experienced and active pelitican turns his
attention te the compilation of a political
manual he increases his usefulness in
society. The average citizen needs politi
cal education aud a work which has been
prepared by Hen. Themas V. Cooper and
Herace T. Kenten, esq., about te be pub
lished in Philadelphia, premises te supply
it abundantly, The Fireside publishing
cempauy will issue about the 20th instant
the large aud elegantly printed volume of
1,100 pages, entitled " American Politics."
It will be in seven separate parts or vol
umes complete in one, with separate index
for each. The first part gives an exhaus
tive history of political parties ; the
second gives all political platforms ;
the third gives great speeches en
great issues from Randelph, down te
Blaine's oration en Garlicld ; the fourth is
a careful manual of parliamentary prac
tice; the filth presents all existing political
laws; the sixth is a complete Federal blue
book, and the feveuth gives a tabulated
.history of politics. This will be a very
timely publication aud valuable te all in
telligent peeple who have any taste for
politics, law, literature of public allairs.
It is te be sold for 5.09 per copy for cloth
binding, 6G.C0 for sheep or library,
$7.00 for Cue half-turkey. While sold by
subscription, parties can order direct for
delivery C. O. D. (a new feature in the

rilVLK :
Christmas has come and gene. The old year has kissed its " gced bye " te '&! and dropped
back Inte the past, taking its place among the most eventful years et history.
The Holidays are ever. The glfty givers have ceased their giving, and the time when any
thing and every tiling would sell se readily has gene.
The " old logy " merchants are preparing te wear out chair cushions anil trousers by
sitting themselves down during the months of January, February and March, te await the
coming et " SPRING TRADE."
The "WIDE AWAKE" MERCHANT, the " Man-Who-Never-Has-a-Dull-Scasen," the
man who has learned that trade can be made in the .usually dull months by working for i
is lauchlug forth some new idea, some attraction which will draw tlte people j and accordingly
keep the trnde a "booming" and give his sleepy neighbors something te talk about and
worry ever.
Can any person be se obstinately blind as net te see that the "EVER BUSY MERCHANT "
is the ene who REDUCES HIS GOODS TO COST in the dull season rather than stere them
away for thu next season, whether his neighbor likes it or net, and such a store is being
sought after by the swarming thousands of Lancaster city's and county's purchasers.
AND NOW WE HAVE OUR STORE ILLUMINATED BY THE ELECTRIC LIGHT
by which every tint and color can be seen as well by night as by day.
I therefore call your attention that every garment has been MARKED DOWN TO COST
FOR THE NEXT THIRTY DAYS, whereby you will be enabled te buy an
OVERCOAT OR SUIT OP CLOTIIES AT A VERY LOW PRICE
