TENNYSON'S LATEST.
Uis Peem en the Charge of the Heavy
Urtcaae HalaKlAva, Oct. 5, 1854.
The three hundred of the Heavy Brigade
who made this famous charge at Balaklava,
October 25, 1851, were the Scotts Greys andthe
second squadron et the InnlskllUngs, the re
mainder el the Heavy Brigade subsequently
dashing up te their support. The three were
Elliett, Scarlett's aid-de-camp, -who had been
riding by his side, and the trumpeter, and
Shcgeg, the orderly, who had been close le
hind him.
i.
The charge of the gallant three hundred,
The Heavy Brigade.
Down the hill, down the hill, thousands off
Russians,
Thousands of horsemen drew te the valley
And stayed.
Fer Scarlett and Scarlett's three hundred were
riding by,
When the points et the Russian lances
Broke In en the sky ;
And he called "Left wheel into line." and
They wheeled and obeyed.
Then he looked at the host that had halted,
He knew net why.
And he turned half round, and he bade his
trumpeter sound,
"Te the charge ." And he rode en ahead, as
he waved Ills blade
Te the gallant three hundred, whose glory
will never die,
' Fellow, and up the hill."
Up the hill, up the hill, followed the Heavy
lltigadc.
ii.
The ti uinpet, the gallop, the charge and
The night et the tight
Down the hill, slowly, thousands of Russians
Drew te the valley, and haltc 1 at last en the
height.
With awing pushed out te the leu, and u
wing te the right;
But Scarlett was tar en nhea 1, and he dashed
up alone
Through the great gray slope of men ;
And he whirled his sabre, he held his own,
Like an Englishman there and then,
And the three that were ncarejt him followed
with force.
Wedged themselves In between horse and
horse.
Fought ter their lives in the narrow gap they
hud made,
Four amid thousands; and up the hlli, up the
hill
Galloped the galluiittlnce bundled the Heavy
Ulisadr.

Fell like :l cannon shot.
Burst like n thunder-belt,
Crushed like a hurilcane.
Broke through the mass, treui oelew.

But they rode like victors ami lends.
Through thutoiestset lances and swetd, -in
