The Number In Twe JTamilles That Arrived en Twe steamship at ew Yerk. New Yerk Telegram, February 20. . The cabin passenger list of two Euro pean steamships that arrived today have singular features. Probably each bears the names of families larger in number than of anv ether families that have before left the Old "World te make their homes iu this country, and it is considered a Ktrange coincidence that both should reach here en the same day. On the Inman steamship city of Montreal were: Mr. Richard Christy, Mrs. Christy, Mrs. Christy, sr., Miss Susanna Christy, Miss Leltio Christy, Master Charles Christy, Miss E. A. Christy, Miss Florence Christy Miss Alice Christy, Master Ernest Christy, Miss Eleaner Christy, Master Bernard Christy, Miss Ethel Christy, Master Geerge Christy. Mr. Richard Christy is a native of Eng-lanil- Since reaching the ase of manhood he has owned and operated a grist mill in Leicester, whose motive power was a peculiar windmill of his own invention. His bachelor brother came here several years age, and engaged in mercantile pur suits in Philadelphia. The miller sold his nmnnrtv in Leicester, and has removed liere at his brother's request. The family will settle in the City of Brotherly Leve. Mr. Christy has two children buried in the graveyard at Leicester. By the White Star steamship Britannic cimc the following : Mr. Saly Raunheiin, Mrs. Saly Rannheim, Master Julius Raun hcim, Miss Julia Raunheiin, Miss Matilda Raunheiin, Miss Fanny Raunheim, Miss Nelly Ramihcim, Master Leen Raunheiin, Mast- Munis Raunheim. Master Eman. Raunheiin. Master Arneld Raunheim and servant. Mr. Raunheiin left Fiankfoiten the Main two years age, and upon arriving in this country engaged in business ia Mon Men tana as superintendent of a copper mine. Fortunate speculations in mining stocks showed such handsome figures en the profit side of his ledger that he decided te bring his family here. They will remain in New Voile until acclimatized, and then leave fur Mentana. rpilK PUREST AND BST MEDIWSE J. ever made. KNIGHT, Ne. 1222 Chestnut Street, a4-lydeed&-2tw I PHILADELPHIA. About Peaches. Gurmantewn Teh-graph. Edwin Salteithwaite, of Jenkintewu, in the adjoining county of Montgomery, who is as well-posted en fruit-culture as any ene in the commonwealth, lead a paper at the Lite animal convention of the state fruitgrewers' association, in which the subject of peaches and peach-growing is discussed. lie refers te no less than sixty sixty iive varieties which he l.as grown, and ive3 the relative hardiness of the trees. Tic says that he has net seen that the ex ex pesuie and locality had anything te de with 1 lies bearing of the trees, but that old tieesdid much the best. He has no geed word for the early varieties of peaches which invariably retted upon the trees by the time they were lit te be gathered. As te hardiness he recommends Amelia, Uecr'j Smock, liilycu's Late Cetact, ('rf-ckctt's Late, Early Louise, Early Kivcis, Celiieii Eagle. Hale's Early, Hark cr's S.:ed:ing, Lcathcrhrey Late, Late Ad mirable, Xanticoke, Plica's Late, Presi dent, Piiiica of Wales, Smock, Snow, Timber and Troth's Early. lie can eiler no geed reason why the early vai it ies sheuhl bear abundant crops of perfect fi uit, and utterly ret at the time when they .should be marketed. As te the "yellows," he appears te be as much in "the dark as ethers, though many assume te kue.v a great deal about this disease, but have never shown that their assumptions have been realized. Mr. Sattcrthwr.ite is doubtless correct in his opinion, that the extirpation el the dis ease has nothing te de with the removal of the roots. That, the affected trees should be icnievcd, and as jneniptly as possible, is a generally admitted opinion ; but. he .shows hew utterly impracticable the leinovalef the roots would be, if even they had anything te de with the propaga tion of the disease, when it is known, as he has himself proved it te be the case, that iu some intanccs these roots ruu a hundred feet! The fact is, as Mr. S. im pliedly admits, the cause and cure of the disease have yet te be discovered, and in the meantime we must fi-iht it with what ever weapons the occasion may eiler and may seem te be defective. Te Destroy the Sparrows. German town Telejjiapli. A Chester county subscriber inquires the best way he can destroy the house sparrows without sheeting them. He has tried tiappings, but Ire finds it a slew pi eccss, &c. We are sorry that he should wish te destroy them at all. We make pets of Iheiu and feed them thieugh the winter daily Whatever may be the case with ethers, wc have never yet discovered thatgthey did any damage at all, and we have watched them for years closely ; but wc kueW tMt they kill myriads of insects, and that we never had such perfect fruit pearc-, cherries, &C as since they have beeu among us in large numbers. How ever, should he desire te get rid of them, poison them new when there are no ether birds, by placidg screenings, canary-seeds or bread crumbs, soaked in arsenic water, and scatter en a reef where the poultry cannot share it. There will be no trouble, wc should think, iu killing every one of them. But we fancy he will be sorry for it.
