Willie Bach a lad who lives with Moses
Bteltzfus, near Bulltown, en bis way te
school accidentally fell off a fence and
broke both bones of bis right forearm.
One day last week tbe Philadelphia mail
bag arrived at Marietta with the hasp
broken and lock off, and only three or
four letters in the bag. The matter was
at once reported but thus far no word has
been received as te whether there was a
robbery or the baa left Philadelphia in
that condition.
Neah Campbell, a tea of Samuel J.
Campbell, at Intercourse, who was mar
ried last summer, died suddenly from ma
lignant scarlet fever en Tuesday morning,
at the residence of Edwin Bair, at Laurel
ville, where tbe deceased and his wife had
made their home preparatory te going te
housekeeping in tbe spring.
A daughter of Mrs. Christian Wanner,
widow, of White Herse in Salisbury town
ship, died of typhoid fever, after an illness
of several weeks. The funeral of the de
ceased was held en Wednesday, and about
neon of that day another daughter et the
bereft widow died from the same dreadfnl
fever, while two ether daughters are ill
fie.n the same disease.
The Plant club of Lancaster will have a
meeting this evening at 7:e0 o'clock, when
Rev. J. S. Stahr, of Franklin and Mar
shall college, will read a paper en "The
place of Betany among the Natural Sci
ences," after which there will be an ex
hibit of specimens of vegetable life under
a large number of microscopes. The club
work will be the examination of the root
and stem.
S. H. Libhart, of Marietta, heard a
noise outside the deer of his father's
kitchen. He paid no attention te it until
he heard footsteps down the alley, and
then he went te the front deer and noticed
a man leaving the alley with a bundle.
Mr. Libhart get his shot-gun and went
after the fellow, whom he saw going up
the alley past the bank. He iired and the
rascal dropped the buudle and ran away.
On examining it there was found three
overcoats, three undercoats, vests atid
several pair of arctic overshoes.
Frank B. Kegar, butcher of Adams
town, has furnished the readers of the
New Helland Clarien with his annual con
tribution containing a list of fat hogs, 41
in number, killed in the borough of Adams
town during last season, and challenges
the Conestoga Valley and the neighbor
hood of New Helland in particular (wheic
most of the shoats came from) te beat it.
They run from 413 te G66, averaging 307.

Mauch Chunk has just opened an ele
gant new public hall, which was built by
citizens and presented te the town, Harry
E. Packer heading the contributors with
7,300 ami General William Lillcy, $5,000;
Charles O. Skecr, 5,000; Judge Jehn
Lciscnring, $5.000 ; half the money con
tributed is te be repaid by the borough in
twenty semi-anuual payments of two and
a half per cent. each. Te remaining half
is an abselute gift.
A man uamed Gubbins, employed as a
marker in a billiard room, Terente, has
succeeded te a share in fifteen million dol
lars through the death of an uncle in Ire
land, who died intestate.
New Orleans is full of sporting men from
all sections, and new arrivals continue at
every train, te be present at the Ryan
Sulhvan contest en the 7th inst., which
will take place en the line of the New
Orleans & Mobile railroad, probably withiu
fifty miles of the city.
At Jeffersen, Ohie, Helden and White,
the pugilists, were released and driven te
Ashtabula.in time for the early train te
New Yerk. Their geed conduct in jail
made them many friends. They gained in
flesh and paled in color by their confine
