The matter for Oedey's Lady,s Boek was also put in type audtcreetyped by the Inqui rer company, biit the plates were printed in Philadelphia. The stereotype plates of a large number of books that had been printed, or wcie in pi ecess of printing, were entirely de stroyed. Among these were the life of Stephen Paxseu ; life of Luther ; Brooks' arithmetics ; a work ou diphtheria ; a work en steam engines, ami many ethers. The building and hat store of Peter Weber en the south and the clothing store of Hirsh & Brether en the north of the burnt building, were considerably damaged by water, te what extent the owners are net yet prepared te state. The liquor store of A. B. ShaeQcr, and the drug store of And. G. Frey were also damaged slightly by water, and Mr. Shaeficr had perhaps $100 worth of bottled liqueis carried oft' during; the hasty "re moval of hi3 goods from the store room. In Ices than fifteen minutes ever eighty ban els of liquor v.eie removed and lay en Neith Queen btrcet, above Orange, for hours while the fire raged. J. P. McCaskcy, owner and publisher of the Scheel Jaurnal and of the Penn Cel lectien of Music, leres severely in plates, stock and ether equipment of his publicn publicn tlensi ; his insurance of $2,500 ran out a very short time age, aud had net yet been scncwi'fi. Tbe Gallant firemen. The firemen cannot be tee highly com mended for their conduct during this the most, tcrrible fire with which Lancaster has cicr been afllictcd. It might have been supposed that some of the volunteers would have -felt tere and been indifferent, or at least lukewarm in their efforts, con sideling the fact that within a few days the volunteer department is te be super seded by a paid department. But net se ; every company labored heroically and in telligcntly in quenching and preventing the spread of the flames. There was no quarreling, but each cempauy did its level best te excel the ether in their unselfish labors the companies that are te be mustered out, as well as theso that arc te remain in the re organized department. Especial praise is due te Assistant Engineer Harry N. Hewell, who, in the absence el Mr. Fred Arneld, chief engineer of the .de partment, was in command of the volun teer forces. He was untiring from the beginning te theend of the fire aud was always at the right place" at the right time. The lircmcu were entertained by several residents in the neighborhood. Mrs. Franciscus and her daughters Sallie Fran ciscus, and Mrs. Yackley, whose home was en lire and in imminent danger of being destieyed, being the foremost te forget their own dapper and minister te the firemen by famishing- them with coffee aud ether refreshments. Ne very serious accidents resulted from the fall of the wall A, though several fire men were struck by pieces of brick and mortar. The most seriously injured per son was Mr. Geerge Rothermel, one of the foremen in the composing room, having his bead rather severely cut by a piece of the falling cornice. His wound is net dangerous. List or Insurances. Insurance Lesses Settled. The losses of Jehn W. Lewell by the late fire at his cellar factory, near the In quirer building, were settled and paid by tbe insurance agents te-day, Mr. L. re ceiving $2, 906.04. THE lNyUIRKB COMPANY. A Krief History of tbe Institution. The institution of which the property is new only a mass of ruins, was the out growth of the weekly Inquirer, formerly owned and run by the late Stuart A. Wylie, son-in-law of Geerge Brnbaker, esq. Te Mr. Wylie's energy, te Mr. Bru bakei's skillful management of his estate and organization of the company after his decease.and te the direction of the Messrs. Wickersham, lately in control, is due the npbuilding of a business which had ob tained a reputation throughout the entire country and which had given employment te ever a hundred, and at times te as many as two hundred men and women, boys and girls of this city. The Inauirer was started en Jau. 1, 1859, by Stuart A. Wylie, Jacob D. Gumpf, and J. W. Gaintner, who en Sept. 1,' purchased and consolidated with it the American Press and Bepublican, and enlarged their publication. In 1800 Mr. Wylie acquired entire control and from July 7, 1802, te Feb. 13, 1804 he published a daily edi tion. On May 1st, 18C8, ex -County Treasurer Ellwood Griest took au interest in the business, the paper was enlarged and the concern greatly developed in the job printing, book binding and stereotyp ing departments. It was in that year that the fine building just destroyed was erected, and it was opened for business in February, 1869. The Fermer Flre. During Mr. Wylie's ownership of the es tablishment it had a memorable experi ence of fire. It was then located en Christian street in the rear of the Mayer property, new occupied by Messrs. Roseustein and Ringwalt, and between 2 and 3 a. m. en Saturday, January 20, 18C7, a bitter cold night, it was discovered te be en lire. The water froze in the hose and all the firemen could de was te save the adjoining property. Mr. W.'s less was $14,000 and insurance $8,000. The office was rebuilt but the business was seen afterwards removed te the new building. t he New Company. Mr Wylie died June 12, 1872 and his surviving partner. Majer Gricat, and Gee. Brubaker organized the printing and pub lishiug company, the stock of which at first was held by a large number of persons and has been gradually settling in a few hands. After sem3 vicissitudes under dif ferent management, J. nannum Jenes, new of Gedcy's Lady i5oe.-,gavo it mere eiudctit organization and superiutendency than it had ever had ; and under the direction of his successor, J. Hareld Wickersham, its affairs were coming into better shape atd premising geed returns. Seme years age the company sold the weekly Inquirer te its editor and owner, Majer Ellwood Griest, whose stock was exchanged for it, and Mr. J. P. McC.isk-y is understood te have lately exchanged his stock for Dr. Wickersham's interest in the ScJtoel Jour nal. At present there are 903 shares of stock in the company, of which the Messrs. Wickersham have 505, a decided majeiity; the estate of Stuart A. Wylie has 90 ; bis widow, new Mrs. Eugene H. Munday, of Philadelphia, has 57; and Prof. Edw. Brooks, of Millcrsvillc, with 40 sharea, is the next largest holder. Te He Contlnueit The sale of the property has been con firmed by the orphan's court and the com pany was of course obligated te take it at the price agreed upon. With the $13,000 insurance upon the building another can likely be built upon the let which will answer the purposes of the concern, though probably net en the same plan, as the structure which has been destroyed. The less en personal proparty,""steck and fix tures is certainly far iu excess of the insurance and the company has re ceived a blew which may be fatal te it as an organization. Dr. Wickersham says very positively, how ever, that the business will be continued in some shape or ether. As an earnest of this his son started te Philadelphia this morning te buy type, and a temporary composing room will likely be fitted up in Lecher's building. The ether printing efiicps in the city have offered te de all tbe press work of which their facilities will admit, te enable tlie Inquirer company te continue its publications without interrup tien, lhe weekly inquirer will print a half sheet cditieu en its usual day of pub- , Iicatien this week. As the Messis. Wickcisham own a ma jerity of the stock, the futuie of the cstab. lisTimeut is entirely within their control, aud it will no doubt be reorganized with comparatively few partners. COLUMBIA SEWS. DDK ttEGULAU CORRESPONDENCE As it has been his usual habit for many yeais te give a birthday party, Mr. Milten Wike yesterday celebrated his 51st birth day. About fifty of his most intimate friends assembled at hisheuse at 3 o'clock, te partake of his generous hospitality. Mr. Wike is ene of our leading citizens, always ready te give and take a joke. lie has served several terms with the school beard, and se well did he de his duty that it caused general regret wheu he declined another nomination. At the Shawnee rolling mill yesterday afternoon, about 1:30 o'clock, Themas Callaton, a young man employed at the works, was taking a piece of sheet iron from its resting place near the heavy squeezer, and in doing se slipped and fell against the large fly wheel ; one arm ly ing en the cogs aud his legs through the spokes of the wheel. As he was about te be precipitated te certain death, the wheel having made a-half rev olution or mere, he . caught a pest aud with an almost superhuman ef fort, pulled himself out of his dangerous predicament. The wheel make's some two hundred revolutions a minute. Mr. Calla ton had one arm fractured at the elbow, and his side was hurt considerable. It is thought probably that he has received internal injuries. Dr. Craig attended him and the sufferer was made as comfei table as possible. lloreugn Uriels. Snow, rain, ice yesterday. President James Buchanan was exceed ingly touchy, when they advised him as te the formation of his cabnet. In a letter te Mr. Ferney, dated " Wheatland, near Lancaster, 13th December, 1856," The president elect wrote : "I have thought and still think that the attempt of a few of my friends in Philadelphia te excite a discussion in the party en the question, whether Pennsyl vania should or should net have a cabinet office, with a view te kill Glancey Jenes, was unkind aud impolitic. It has, I as sure you, had a contrary effect, both en the public and ou myself, from what was intended. Since this was known, I have received mere fetters iu favor of the ap pointment of Jenes te the cabnet than any ether man. I have net determined whether I shall or shall net select a cabi net minister from Pennsylvania, but one thing is quite certain, I shall make my own cabinet. I am sorry te perceive from two letters from Mr. Cobb, which yen gave Magraw te show me, that he will accept no cabinet appointment except the de partment of State. It was kind in him te give me notice of this determination in advauee." The italics are Mr. Buchauau's. In a postscript he says : " I have as kind a feeling and high re spect for Mr. Cobb as I entertain for any ether gentleman in the Union. I knew his ability and his worth, aud am truly sorry that if I should finally cenclude te offer him a cabinet appointment, this must be either the premiership or nothing."
