IS IT DELEON
Uruwu Kehenttutl Brewnprizer- or Some
body Else?
Chief of Police Deichler returned te
Lancaster yesterday afternoon at 5:20,
Laving in his custody a prisoner, sup
posed by some te be Dr. DeLeon, but who
recently served a term of imprisonment in
Allegheny county under the name of Fred
erick P. Brown.
Al. and Gee. Hawthorn, who were en
the same train en which Chief Deichler
went te Pittsburgh, visited the lockup
with the chief aud were shown the pris
oner in his cell. They declared him te
be DeLeon, and when the chief expressed
doubts as te his identity, one of the Haw
thorns, who had frequently met DeLeon,
said he was se sure that Brown was De-
Leen, and that if he was net proven te be
the man, he (Hawthorn) would make the
chief a present of a $j hat. The Allegheny
authorities were equally sure that Brown
aud DeLeon was one aud the same man.
The prisoner declared he was net the
man that was wanted in Lancaster, and
that the officer would have his trouble for
nothing. He said that he was an Austriau
and his name was Rudelph Frederick
Brewnprizer. That he came te America
some years age aud settled in Philadel
phia : and married a young woman of that
city. He seen afterwards get into il trou

father, lie skipped the town, went te
Reading, Lebanon, and afterwards te Lau
caster, iu the summer of 1879, aud thence
te Pittsburgh. Being a baker by trade he
secured work en Penn street at a large
bakery ruu by a Mr. Blante. He made
love te Blante's sister aud the tender pas
sion was reciprocated. He repieseuted te
Mr. Blante that he expected a gieat fortune
from Austi ia, and it would be necessary
te be in New Yerk en a certain
day te meet a bhip en which the
fortune was te be brought ever. He
wanted te take Miss Blante along with

Finally it was agreed that he should many

back te Pittsburgh, that he had been for
given, and all would be light. He fell

for obtaining money en false pretense.
Brown or Brewnprizer, or whatever his
name may be, appears te be about 38
years old, is dark complcxieued, about 5
feet 10 inches iu height and weighs 14 or
150 pounds, has smooth (ace aud dark hair
and moustache. He speaks with a strong
German accent. Chief Deichler, who
never saw DeLeon, thinks the prisoner is
net the man, and was se well convinced of
it en leaching Alteena that he had half a
mind te let him go. Ofllcer Titus, who
saw DeLeon once, thinks the prisoner is
net DeLeon, who was an elder and darker
looking man. One or two ethers who
have seen the prisoner say he is net De De
Leen. Chief Deichler says, however, that the
prisoner contradicted himself several
times. He told the chief he had never
been in Lancaster in his life ; he after
wards said he had never been here but
once, when he came ever from Reading,
waited in the depot until the next train
arrived, and then stalled for Pittsburgh.
He pointed te the Glebe hotel as the ics
tauraut he had noticed opposite the Read
ing depot which all of our Lancaster
leaders knew is net there, but opposite
the Pennsylvania railroad depot. He also
told the chief his Philadelphia wife's
maiden name was Ilehenthal, aud after
wards gave the same name as his mother's
maidcH name.

Perter te Conclude This Afternoon
and the Case te Ue te tne Jury
Peululr Te-night,
"Washington, Jan. 25. The court
room was again densely packed this morn mern
ing. The prisoner as usual opened the pro
ceedings and said : " My sister has been
doing some silly talk in Chicago. She
means well, but she's no lawyer."
. Judge Perter then resumed his argu
ment. Guitcau seen commenced te inter
rupt, but Perter kept steadily en with
his torrent of invective, telling the jury
that Uuiteau had two laces eue showing
the sauctity of the Pharisee, and the ether
the hioeeus grin of the fiend that is
in him. Regarding the prisoner's com
paring himself te Paul in his travels Perter
said Paul never palmed oil' brass watches
for geld, nor swindled his creditors, lhe
picture given by Perter of ' Honorable "
Charles Guiteau, as the prisoner once ad
vertised himself, provoked the latter te
the most abusive retorts, and " You're a
liar " was frequently piped in by him dur
ing the scathing review of his past life.
As Perter went en te speak of the shy
ster lawyer and te show that when Satan
fell there was some improvement in Satan,
while in this man there never could be
improvement, Guiteau became violent.
Scevillo tried te speak, and for a time the
court room was a babel. The efforts of
the bailiffs te quiet Guiteau were success
ful, iu se far as they at ti acted his wrath
toward them, aud for a moment or mere it
seemed mere than possible that some of
the officers would he provoked into taking
the law into their own hands. The pris
oner declared wildly that " a saint from
heaven couldn't stand tbis man Perter's
bosh;" but otherwise he exhibited a
keenness ami slnewdness in his interrup
tions that showed that he npreciated his
hist chance.
When Peiter contrasted Charlette C'or C'er
day's act of patriotism with Guiteau's
foul 'act of murder, the latter was
aroused te fury and bellowed like a wild
beast, drowning the speaker's veici at
times. " Ged Almighty will curse you
you miserable whelp, you," he screeched.
Perter quietly asked the jury te con
trast this vindicative, cowardly wretch
with the spectacle of Charlette Cerday
going te her death with her hanns fouled
ever the cresses en her breast und a serene
smile upon her lips, denoting her willing
ness te die for her cenn try. Then Judge
Perter raade out Wilkes Beeth almost a
patriot beside Guiteau, the latter mean
while pouring a stream of interruptions,
stammering with rage aud exhibiting his
vicious nature as he never did befeie.
At 12:20 a recess was taken.
Perter will conclude te-day iu which
case Judge Cox will deliver his charge and
the case may go te the jury te-night.
Upen re-assembling Guiteau attempted
te make another harangue but was cut
short by Judge Cox. Perter then con
tinued te argue that Guiteau's crime was
the outcome of a spirit of rcvenge.

" Chum " Rockwell Said te Have Kurnlshed
the Midnight Despatch.
Courier-Journal.
It is stated upon geed authority
that the man who gave away the
new famous Whitelaw Reid midnight
despatch is Colonel A. F. Rockwell,
the late president's special chum.
There has been from the day the president
was shot a dead feeling between Rockwell
and Blaine. Blaine was from the start in
favor of the " inability theory." and that
Arthur should step in and act as presi
dent. Such a course was net at all te the
liking of Rockwell or any of the "chums;"
they were down en Blaine from the very first
day of the illness. One day, at the White
Heuse, Rockwell, who played the "chum"
business for all it was worth, said : "When
the president gets up from his bed there
will be two removals from the cabinet."
He referred te Blaine and MacVcagb, both
of whom were in favor of Arthur becom
ing acting president. Garfield made copies
of the Whitelaw Reid despatch before the
original was returned te Jehn Hay, te
whom Whitelaw Reid sent it. One of
these copies came into the hands of
"Chum" Rockwell, who, it is understood,
has giveti it publication te break down
the Blainc-Reid combination.
