"Toe Perlt'ctly Awlul."
weakness of the Superlative In Speech
A characteristic essay, by Ralph Walde
Emersen, en "The Superlative," forms a
leading feature of the Midwinter Century,
aud contains the following :
There is a superlative temperament
which has no medium rauge, but swiftly
oscillates lrem the freezing te the boiling
point, and which affects the manners of
these who share it with a certain despera
tion. Their aspect is grimace. They go
tearing, convulsed through life wailing,
praying, exclaiming, swearing. Wc talk,
sometimes, with people whose conversa
tion would lead you te suppose that they
had lived in a museum, where all the ob
jects were monsters aud extremes. Their
geed people arc phejnixes ; their naughty
are like the prophet's figs. They use the
superlative of grammar : " most pctfeet,"
" most exquisite," " most horrible." Like
the French, they arc enchanted, they arc
desolate, because you have get or have net
get a shoe string or a wafer you happen te
want net perceiving that superlatives arc
diminuative and weaken ; that the positive
is the sinew of speech, the superlative the
iat. If the talker lese a teeth, he thinks
the universal thaw and dissolution el
things has come. Controvert his opinion
and he cries " Persecution !' and reckons
himself with St. Barnabas who was sawn
in two.
Especially we nole this tendency te ex
tremes in the pleasant excitement of hor
ror mongers. Is there something se deli
cious in disasters and pain '.' Bad news is
always exaggerated, aud we may chal
lenge Providence te send a fact se tragi
cal that we cannot contrive te make it a
little worse in our gossip.
All this comes el poverty. We aru un
skillful dcfineis. Frem want of skill te
convey quality we hope te move idmira
tien by quantity. Language should aim
te describe the fact. It is net enough te
suggest it a:.d magnify it. Sharper sight
would indicate the true line. 'Tis very
wearisome, this straining talk, these ex
periences, all exquisite, iutcuse, and tre
mendeus " The best I ever saw ;" " I
never in in' life !" One wishes these terms
gazetted and forbidden. Every favorite
is net a cherub, nor evcrv cat a grifliu ;
nor each uuplcasing person a dark, dia-f
behcal intriguer ; nor agonies, excrucia excrucia
teons, nor ccstacies our daily bread.
Ti'iiiperuta Statement.
Hew impatient we arc.in these northern
latitudes, of looseness aud intemperance
in .speech ! Our measure of success is the
moderation and low level of an individ
ual's judgment. Docter Chanuing's. piety
and wisdom had such weight that in Bos Bes Bos
eon the popular idea of religion was what
ever this eminent divine held. But I re
member that his best friend, a man of
guarded lips, speaking of him in a circle
of his admirers, said: "I have known
him long, I have studied his character, and
I believe him capable of virtue.'' An
eminent French journalist paid a high
compliment te the Duke of Wellington,
when his documents were published :
" Here are twelve volumes of military dis
patches, and the word lery is net found
in them.
The first valuable power in a jcasenable
mind, ene would say, was the power of
plain statement, or the power te receive
things as they befall, and te transfer the
picture, of them te another mind unaltered
"f is a geed rule of rhetoric which Schlegel
gives ' In geed prese. every wen! is un
derscored : ;' which, I suppose, means
never italicise.
Spartans, stoics, heroes, saints aud gods
use a short and positive speech. They arc
never oft" their ccnties. As seen as they
swell aud paint and find truth net enough
for them, softening of the brain has al
ready begun.
It seems as if inflation were a disease in
cident te tee much use of words, and the
remedy lay in a recourse te things I am
daily struck with the forcible understate
ment of people who have no literary habit.
The low expression is stieng and agree
able. The citizen dwells in delusions. His
dress and draperies, house and siables,
occupy him. The peer ceuntrymau,
having no circumstance of carpets, coaches,
dinncis, wine, aud dancing in his head te
confuse him, is able te leek M might at
you, without refraction or prismatic
glories, aud he sees whether you sre
straight also, i.r whether your head is
addled !y this mixture of wines.
The common people diminish : ' a cold
snap;" "it lams easy ;" 'geed hay
ing weather." When a farmer means te
tell you that he is doing well with his
farm, he says, "I don't work as hard as I
did, aud 1 don't mean te." When he
wishes te condemn any treatment of soils
or of stock, he says, " It won't de any
geed." Under the Catskill mountains the
boy in a steamboat said "Come up here,
Teny ; it leeks pretty out of doers."
The Superlative " at Public Dinners
I once attended a dinner given te a urcat
state functionary by functionaries men of
law, state and trade. The guest was a
great man in his own country aud an hon
ored diplomatist in this. His health was
drunk with some acknowledgment of his
distinguished service te both countries,
and followed by nine cold hurrahs. There
was the vicious superlative. Then the
great ellicial spoke and beat his breast, and
declared that he should remember this
honor te the latest moment of his exist
ence. He was answered again by officials.
Pity, thought I, they should lie se about
their keen sensibility te the nine cold hur
rahs and te the commonplace compliment
of a dinner. Men of the world value
truth, in proportion te their ability, net
by its sacrcdncps, but for its convenience
Of such, especially of diplomatists, one
has a right te expect wit andingenuity te
avoid the lie, if they must comply with
the form. New, I had been present, n little
before, in the country at a cattle show
dinner, which followed an agricultural dis
course delivered by a farmer ; the dis
course, te say the least, was bad ; and one
of our village fathers jjave at the dinner
this toast : " The orator of the day ; his
subject deserves the attention of every !
fanner. Hie caution el the toast lui
honor te our village farmer. I wish great
lords aud diplomatists had as much rcsprct
for truth.

James Dunlap, of New Haven, Count,
applied for .v position as farm hand at
Deacon Eldridge's farm, in Lansdale,Pa ,12
years age, and was put at work. Eldridge
had a daughter 16 years old, who became
fascinated with Dunlap, anil after an ac
quaintance of two years he asked the dea
con for the daughter's hand in marriage.
The deacon objected because el Duulap's
penniless condition. The girl premised te
gain her father's consent or put an end te
her unhappy existence. Dunlap left the
farm, declariug that he would some day
return a mau et wealth and influence. He
went te Wyoming territory, where he ob
tained a situation as driver ou a stage line
aud at the end of live years he purchased
a half interest in the business. By shrewd
financiering and successful speculations he
cleared 20,000, which, with the profit
from his business, gives him the title of
being ene of the wealthiest residents of
Wyoming. He is also one of the heaviest
stockholders in a new railroad enterprise.
He returned en Thursday, after an absence
et ten years, and was married te Miss
Eldiidge. The wedding was a jjrand
aifair. The bridal couple go te New Haven
and thence te Wyoming. The bride has
rejected many eilers in the past ten years.
She is the belle of the Lackawanna vallev.
Wilde at (lie Capital.
Congressman Robeson Shetting the -"Usllieie
Around Washington.
Washington Correspondence of tlie Times.
I had the pleasure of seeing Oscar Wilde
make his debut in society here that is te
say, his first appearance in a large com
pany. It was sensational te a degree. The
scene was at Marim's hall, where a choice
company was assembled at the german
given by the Bachelors' club. The hand
some hall was adorned with groups of pot pet
ted plants and brilliant with lights, Hash
ing jewels, handseme faces aud elegaut
toilets. The guests numbered several
hundred and included members of the cab
inet and of both houses of Congress, with
ladies of their families, numerous ladies
aud gentlemen of the diplomatic corps,
aud many respected residents of the citv.
It was fairly a representative Washington
party.
Just as the ball was at its height, that
isafierll o'clock, during a pause of the
music between two figures of the german,
through the widely opened doers entered
Representative Robeson and his wife,
always a regal-looking woman, with her
white hair aud stately iigure, and ou this
occasion especially se in a toile: of garnet
velvet, rare lace ami diamonds, aud Oscar
Wilde, the lien of Londen society and poet
apostle of the aesthetes, conscious te the
very ends of his thick, long, bushy hair of
his claim te these titles, and evidently ex
pectant of trausiixing the admiring gaze
el" the assembled company.
He had the benefit of the glances of ali
present, but curiosity, net admiration,
was the cause ; the comments made en
the strange looking figure in the black
dress coat, with wide low cellar overhung
by the long hair ; his lower extremities,
which are both thin aud crooked, clad te
emphasize their ugly angularity in close
fitting knee breeches, black silksteckiugs
and low shoes, were far from flattering te
the egotist, who looked, as some promptly
said, te no as great a crank as Unitcau.
The comparison suggested itself at ence
because the aggressive self-conceit of the
one seems equaled only by that of the
ether, and it having been demonstrated se
painfully in Guiteau's case te what tragic
lengths that overweening passion for no
toriety, and especially eccentric notoriety,
usually thought harmless, may lead its
possessor, Washington people, at least, te
whom liens are never a rarity, are in no
mood new te Hatter any one who seems te
demand it.
In his manner of entering the ball room
as who shall say " the eyes et the world
arc upon mc," he called te mind the epi
sode or the sunflower his asthetic floral
pet, in the c.tntata of the Coronation of
the Rese," when all the flowers being as
sembled as candidates for royal honors,
the chorus sings :
ililt who comes here t Who comes here ?
' I'is the suiillewer, 'tis the sunlit, uer !
Hail, all hail, Bemliastics, ever hail.
And the sunflower in this again typical
of the lien of Londen society, who evident
ly thinks the sun rises and sets for him
begins :
The golden sun leeks en jiitf all the day.
And gives te uir at night his last, his parting
ray.
I saw no ene seem specially eager for an
introduction, and the youth posed sitting
beside the ladies te whom he was firit
introduced, turning his profile, whose out
lines aie as little beautiful as these of his
legs, te the congregation side. His face
leeks very sallow and he seems te endeav
or te roll his eyes in a fine poetic frenzy.
If he must exhibit legs for which nature
has done se little, why should he net
bring avthctic art te their aid and pad
them? llebieught letters of introduction
te Representative and Mrs. Robeson, who
entertained him at dinner Friday evening,
and then first took him te a reception
given by the Cdimuissioner of Agriculture
and Mrs. Lesing te the delegates te the
agiicniLural convention, in session here
this week, and then te the german, as
mentioned.
