Comic Opera.
Solid Seuse en a Seasonable Subject.
Wilkesuarrc Union-Leader.
The rage for comic opera is dying out,
and all becanse the traveling combinations
which strike interior town like our own,
are generally made up of inferior pcople,
led off possibly by one weli known artist
whose name is tclied upon te draw full
houses. Unfeitunately ter these artists
as well as the people, they are both made
miserable and from the socie cause. A
gem always leeks richer the handsomer it
is set. Se the operatic singer can't pos
sibly shine when he or she is
sut rounded by an unhappy and cheap
let of assistant?. The managers el these
traveling companies always speculate
upon the notoriety gained by first class
companies in the large cities. The tlattering
notices they teceive are made te de duty
for the cheaper concerns, aud patrons are
thereby fooled into paying a dollar or se te
see and hear what they discover tee late te
be anything like what they expected. Mag
nificent paper en the wall, rieh lithographs
and all the seductive methods of the
printer's art aie called into play te aid in
the deception. When big houses are he
cuied the managers are satisfied and care
very little for public disappointment. The
leactien is already setting in and people
aie beginning te demand artists instead of
amateurs, and te knew that they are with
worthy operatic companies before they
patronize them. And this is as it should
be.
Gilbert ic Kullivau's Forthcoming Preduc.
lien.
Londen World-
The reader knows that Aithur Sullivan
left for Caire. His 'Patience" is filling
the house nightly and is expected te de Se
for another twelve months. En hemines
'prudents, however, .Messrs. Gilbert & Sul
liv:.n prepare the operetta te fellow "Pa
tience," and while the former is writing
the winds he rands them pest by pest te
Egypt, se that by March and April, when
Sullivan return.-;, what keeps the pet boil
ing will be pterided for, and he will then
use his time for hush ! something else.
New you would like te knew what thai
new piece turns about, since the sailors in
" Pinafore," the pirates and policemen in
" Penzance," the soldiers and pretty
a.-sthctic girls have been shown in " Pa
tience." What will new the toilet
be '.' Ah veil n .' They will be
fairies ! Twenty - live years before
the piece commences a fairy has
committed the indiseretiou'ef marrying a
mortal. This by fairy law is deah, but
the queen of the fairies has commuted the
sentence te banishment for life among the
mortals, en condition that she leave her
husband and never lcvcal herself te him
again. Soen after a seu is born unto her.
This son is half fairy, half mortal, being
fairy down te the waist a re il idol with
feet of clay. He is educated as a mortal
should be, and called te the Uar, where
hispiegtess proves se letnaikable, owing
te the cleverness and the exceptional in
tegrity with which he conducts his pro
fession, that in a few years he rises te tiic
rank of attorney general. True te her
premise the mother, although the sees
the father, never allows herself te be
seen by him until an incident which shows
that a mother's love te her child is strong
er than the love of her own life, makes h.r
bteak her vow. She lcvealsheiself te him,
altheti"h the penalty for the act is death.
The fact is that the father and son love
the same girl, and the father, fancying his
wife te be dead, contemplates marrying
the girl. The mother, alter having in
vain tried in disguise te persuade the
father te give in ter the sake of his seu, as
a last resource, unveils her face and tells
him. "Pichohl.veu cannot marry, lam your
wife !" The skill and the distinguish!-1 (
taste with which the fairy, represent-
ing the noblest sentiments, is led through
the piece, 'with wsthetic grace, is only
what could be expected fiem the skillful
and successful pen that threw the inspiia inspiia
tien en the paper. In order te bring the
piece te the desired end there comes a
dcus c.v7)iac7iini, but that for the picscnt
: rmains untold.

Early en Saturday morning- Addie told her
mother that, she was going te spend the
Sunday with her aunt Spenser, who lives
half a'niile away. The truth was, she
wished te see her cousin, who is a dashing
bean. On Sunday morning they were
seated in the sitting-room in must lever-
like lclatiens. Mrs. Spdnser, peeping

Addie, and then saw Addie kiss

moments, Mis. Spenser laughing slyly

A little later Fred said that he .was going
te accompany his fair cousin home. Addie
kissed her aunt, said geed-bye, and the
two went down down the read hand in
hand. They had geno only about half the
distance when they espied a neighbor's
horse and buggy by the roadside. Ficd

sisted his cousin te enter the buggy, and
they set out at full speed toward Nor
wich. It was net until near nightfall that
they were missed. The parents of Addie,
having vainly sought her at the home of
the Spensers. speedily aroused the whole
town of Montville, and searching parties
weie sent out. in every direction. One
party came le this city, and, with the aid
of the police, seen found the children
driving about in one of the back streets.
