L"--j-f,-e LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCER WEDNESDAY. JANUARY li, 18S2. ft a ncastr i in tclligencer. WEDNESDAY EVENING, JAN. 11, 1882. Improved Grasses Oai mantewn Telegraph. Iu many lespects grass culture has net kept pace with improvements in ether branches. We are continually getting new plautb, new trees, new fruits, new vegeta bles, new grains, but a no w grass is never thought of. We have the same orchard grass, the fcatnc red top, the same timothy, that we had ever a hundred years age ; and se far as the drift of thought gees, we -ball have the ame grasses for a hundred years te come. And yet there is no icasen that we c.iu sec why there should net be improved grasses, as well as improvements in any ether thing ; and facie doubtless would b if public atteu-f-en was drawn te the matter as it should b.. "We have, te be sure, dunug the -past twenty years or se, been tieatcd te Hun garian grass or millet a harsh, coarse thing, of little merit 'except for the very heavy crops it produces ; and Luccrue i.s n. better, There surely must be ethcis which it would be of advantage te intro duce. We see in fercigu agricultural journals that some attention is being given te a species of grass vailed Tusseck-giass, from its growing in large bunches, and which, from its description, appeals te be closely allied te ercLard grass. It does net appear te be con sidered very hardy ; but thcic :ue no doubt a number of places en this conti nent where it would find itMslf entirely at home. It is said te giew live or six lc t in height, and te produce vegetation of great fineness of quality and exceedingly nutritious. When once a Held is set with it, it is seldom killed out by ether vegeta tion, and gees en preduciug geed crops for a gi cat many years. It appears te be haidy in Hungary, and if se it ought te stand considerable frost. We wish all this was just se as stated, but we ate afraid that in this as iu se many ether new and icputed valuable products of the soil, we shall net hear much of it in the future. But it is net only by the introduction of new species that our grass crops and yrass lauds may be improved theie might be selected geed varieties of tha kinds we new grew, just as we have b-leetc.i geed kinds of ether things'. There scnis te li bera a geed chance ler soni-bedy. ( m II. J!. Cecurau s niuir "teic, .p .Ninth 1 net ii stiecl, ler lfi. "; it i.ntu' A'ttc Xa Xa lien.it ...
