In Trenten a little daughter of Jeseph
McDanieis drank part of a cup of con
centrated lye, from the effects or which
she died in horrible agony.
Shut Through tlie Heart In a Duel.
Manuel Valcsce shot through the heart
and instantly killed Vecoute Cane in a
duel at Cliipanau-je, Mexico. Heth were
lieutenants in the Fifth infantry.
Suicide Despite Friendly ViRllituce.
Samuel S. Ward, a prominent and
wealthy citizen of Pert Huren, Mich.,

He had been acting very strangely for two
or three weeks and had been watched by
friends, but eluded their vigilance at
last.

Dr. K. F. Adams, the physician at the
Michigan insane asylum, who was stabbed
by a patient has died. The weuud was
in the abdomen and was inflicted with a
pocket knife, which had been concealed.
In the struggle an attendant was also se
verely stabbed in the leg. Dr. Adams was
one of the most popular or the medical
stall'.
A Heuse Riddled Willi Utilleli.
An account bar, been received of aseveie
skirmish at West pert, La., between J. W.
Moere and parly, who occupied his store,
and a be-ijging party outside. The house
was riddled with bullets during the siege,
the windows being shot out. ltebert Per
kins, .1. Dykes and Samuel Mcricle were
killed and several ethers wounded.

A Fatal Explosion at ilie LanIbrtI JVllne t-t

A terrific fire-damp explosion occurred
in mine Ne. 10 of the Lehigh coal and
navigation company, at Lansford. Themas
Parry, of Gcnuantewn, the fire-boss, is
missing and is believed te be dead. Eight
men and one boy were badly injured.
Among the latter are Edward Gatels, from
Georgetown ; three men, named respec
tively Kymbacli, liurns and Klhic, aud
five ethers I'r.nn Tamaqua, whose names
are unknown. One of them had his back
broken and the ethers have legs and arms
broken and arc badly burned and crushed.
The explosion was caused by a fall of coal
breaking the safety lamp in the bauds of
Fire-boss Pai ry. Luckily the lire did net
spread and the damage te the mine is con
sequent!)' light.
A. CLEVER ESCAPE.
HreaKing Jail Wlillc the Jailer Carries To
bacco te the Prisoner.
One of the most daring, successful and
well-planned escapes from jail en. record
was made at the Maiden Lane jail, Albany,
en Saturday, giving liberty te William
Burke, alias " Hilly the Kid," the famous
bank and bend robber. The prisoner was
recently arrested in Buffalo for being im
plicated in the robbery of $117,000 from a
f'levv.laiid bank. lie was delivered te
Albany officers and brought te the city.
Burke was confined with the ether male
prisoners in what is known as the rear
portion of the jail. The entrance is from
the hall between the sheriffs office and
jailer's receiving room. The entrance is
guarded by two doers, the outer ene being
of solid weed with a circular hole near the
top, covered with wire netting, the inner
dour being of iron, the upper half composed
of heavy bars. It has been customary te
allow the friends of prisoners te stand en
the outside of the outer deer and talk te
their friends through the netting ever the
circular hole. In the afternoon a stranger
called and was granted permission te talk
through the netting te Burke. The
stranger gave the jailer a package or to
bacco for a prisoner who was up stairs.
While the jailer was delivering the pack pack
age the man unlocked both doers with
Talse keys, and the Kid witii his friend ran
from the building aud have net siuce been
seen. Telegraph messages have been
seut in all directions, the entire ferce of
the city are in search of the fugitive and
the sherifl" lias offered a 10 ward of $1,000
for his arrest.
