Uulteaa Boisterous as Ever.
Washington, Jan. 5. Guiteau's opeu epeu

Cel.Recd then addressed the court in favor
of the request and paid a glowing tribute
te Sceville. Mr. Davidge spoke in opposi

tailing the hardships under which the
defense labored. Experts for the defense
were compelled te be satisfied with $1.25

government experts are te be fully reim

speak Guiteau commenced and wheu a
bailiff attempted te quiet him he threat

Judge Cox recognized the fact that
counsel for the defense came hete a
stranger te the court te. find himself en
vironed with difficulties from the outset,
yet he must exclude evidence of insanity
in sur-rebuttal, but evidence showing the
motive for the assassination might be ad
mitted. Mr. Sceville then called Docter Beard,
of New Yerk, but the prosecution object
ed ; the judge sustained objection. Ex

Mr. Sceville then called J. J. Brooks,

Visited the prisoner at the jail ou the night
of the assassination. The testimony went
te show that in the interview the prisoner
believed himself inspired, aud acting for
the best iuterest of the Republican party.
Notwithstanding his early morning
premise, Guiteau continued te interrupt
and became involved in an altercation
with eqe of the bailiffs, starting at him
and threatening te slap his mouth. He
also once rnore pronounced Sceville a
jackass.
The case being closed, Sceville asked for
time te prepare his law points te submit
te the judge, and after the prosecution
had read their law points the court ad

Four Years In Maturing.
Newport Letter in Bosten Transcript.
Mauy of you must have received among
ether Christmas tokens delicate, exquisite
sprays of the lily of the valley, doubly
sweet and trebly precious at this season.
All of them came from Newport. I saw a
late order, after Bosten was thought sup
plied, for many hundreds mere and saw
them packing. Of course, I expended a
little sentiment ever them and would like
te have seen each's destination. Leng
age each bulb was raised in Germany ; it
crossed the sea, found rest for a little
time here, bloomed under the Ieviug care
of our German florist and yesterday
reached its fruition and te-morrow it will
be dead. Four years it took te bring that
flower te perfection which yesterday
brought you a Christmas greeting, told
you some story its giver meant it should,
or perhaps went into tired hand at rest
forever. I saw seventy thousand of these
lilies in the green house yesterday in dif
ferent stages, all showing green leaves and
many wide opened bells. Fifty-two hun
dred went te New Yerk and I de net knew
hew many te Bosten.
There are four thousand tulips set out
in the same house and thousands of these
went te the great cities. Every bulb came
from Helland. It is the loveliest of sights
te go down this long aisle in the lily house
with borders et fragrant green and white
flowers, se pure in color and perfume, each
blossom literally worth its weight iu geld.
These flowers go from here te every great
city, especially te New Yerk, Philadelphia,
Bosten and Washington, and fortunately
they-will keep three times as long asa rose,
and are therefore much sought after.
