Vertices.
As stated in la:t evening's Ij. m.llioen m.llieen
CLR.the wieck at Xuith Dead. uearClnist
iana station en the Peunsjh nia railroad
was cleared away fcufficieutly te allow
trains te pass ou the north track, at 4
o'clock p. m. The teutli tiack was clear
ed by 1) o'clock in the evening, and the
immense trains by which the read was
blocked were put iu motion, and te-day
both patsztiger and freight trains arc run
ning en schedule time.
The work of clearing the track wab done
by the Parkcsburg and Columbia wrecking
trains, assisted by all the repairmen that
could be leathered between these points.
They did their work well and with gieat
rapidity.
Werk of tne Washington Mre Company.
The Washington fue company which
left this city between G and 7 o'clock yes
terday morning, returned about 10 o'clock
last night. The steamer was iu chaige of
Engineer Jacob Ilcizeg and about fifteen
members of the Washington company.
Chief Engineer of the Fiic Department,
Arneld was also aleni: with them.
On leaving the city they were told the
train ou which their steamer was leaded
would have a clear track, and the train
rau down the track at a high rate of speed.
Just below Witmcr's station a train was
seen en the track ash ei fc distnuce te the
lient. The engine was icveistd. and the
tiaiu bauds made leady te jump from the
train.cxpectinga collision ; but, fortunate
ly, the tiaiu v.v,i stepped v.ithiu a few
yaids of the one iu fieui of it. The
Washy boys lay at Wiltnei's fei some
lime, and then lan en te Kinzer's, where
they were again detained, and did
net reach the wicck until half-past eight.
Their steamer was at once taken fiem the
car and hauled te the Octoraro cicck,
about 000 yaids fiem the wieck. A line
of 12 sections of hose was laid, and water
was at once tin own upon the burning
mass of cars aud mcichaudise, fiem nine
o'clock till neon by which time some parts
of the mass weie sufficiently cooled elf te
be handled, aud the weik of icmeviug it
was vigoieusly pushed feiwaid. Dining
the alternoeu die " Washy" did geed
service iu tilling the tanks of a number of
locomotives that could net otheiwise get
t supply of water.
The lailiead men cut all the weed nee
t'ssaiy tes-upply the liicmeu aud hauled
thcii steamer from the creek te the railroad
with a yoke of oxen the first working
"cattle " that sonic of the bejs had ever
seen. They weie furnished with geed din
ner and suppci at the hotel ; quit work at
dusk and i cached this city at 10 o'clock
last night as above stated.
Incidents or the Wieck.
Immediately after the collision the
wiccked cngiucs aud cats wcic piled up!
in the deep cut as high as a thicc-stery
house, the high and leeky walls of the cut
preventing them from teppliug ever side
ways. The couflagiatien was immense,
aud while it was binning many bundled
spcctateis galhcied te witucss the grand
but distressing .spectacle. When the liie
bad been extinguished gieat cakes of
mscd glass aud iien, many feet iu dimen
sions, were found and had te be cut aud
broken bcfeie they could'hcicnievcd. as
cinucis aie bieken at the iien furnaces.

frame shanty withaplatfeim in front of it.
While euy thing eNc in the cut was i
burucd the shanty escaped unscathed.
Immediately after the collision Engineer
Diffcudcifei was seen standing staik
naked en the platfeim of the shanty.
When the cras-h came, and he had becu
tenibly scalded and binned, he had cxtii
catcd himself liein the wreck and tiicd te
save himself by teaiiug Ins clothes fiem
his body. He was at once piepcily clothed
and caiiicd te the hotel where lie was
tenderly cared for but his hints wcre
beyond the ait of suieiy.
While removing the debiis after the
lire, the watch cauiul by lSiakcmau
Frewnfclter was feui'u, aud this convinced
the workmen that his icmaiiis weic net
far off. A caicful scaich was made, but
only a few beues and pieces of bone could
lie leund. none of I he pieces beinj! I.ugcr
thati a man's linger, and all of them net
filling a man's hat. The body had fei-iii
completely ciemated, and the !iagir.cnts
of bone alone weie galhcied together for
buiial.
An immense crowd of people visited the
tecne ycstculay, ami theic was the great
est excitement a jieng them, aud all seit
of comments as te the cttisoel the wreck
and the culpability of the lailiead com
pany and its employees. About eOO people
took dinner and supper at the hotel in
Christiana, the landleid being liteially
eaten out of house aud home.
Iho I.Lbs 1 inanciail.
The estimate of the less of piepcity by
the wreck aud the conll.igiatien that ac
ceuipauicd it has net jet been made by
theelfiecis of the company. Twe loco
motives, Kes. 23'J and S2, were entirely
destroyed, nothing but the iien poitiens
lcmaining. Twelve cais were burucd,
four of them beingempty and eight leaded
with valuable merchandise. Engiue 2 13
aud a geed many ether cars were scotched
aud blistered by the heat fiem these that
were burned.

The skeletons of the burned locomotives
have been put together for transportation
te the Alteena shops. It is reported that
they will pass through Lancaster te day

UVITE.W.
His ' Customary Opening Speech."
Washington, D. C, Dec. 31. Guiteau's
customary opening speech consisted this
morning of the announcement that "one
et my suaitls here, Mr. Cunningham, has
get an eleven pound baby for a New
Year's present."' (Laughter, in which
the jiny heartily joined.) Dr. Gray re
sumed the stand and much discussion
ensued ever his line of evidence,
Scevillo keeping him down te plain
statements and objecting te anything
which looked like generalizing. Wit
ness had seen a number of cases
where persons laboring under insane de
lusions, had committed acts of violence
and had afterwards, leeevered their
sanity, but could net recall an
instauce of recovery within a
shorter peiied than tlirce months. This
reply was corroborative of previous testi
mony and stiengly opposed te the prison
er's claim that he recovered sanity fiem the
" irresistible pressure" for iusane delu
sion) after he had shot the president.
Witness was asked te give his opinion en
bcicdity and lcplied ! " It is the trans
mission of physical likeness and sitnuli
tutlc. It is the rule iu physical char
acteristics but in the trausmis-aeti of
susceptibility te disease it is the
exception au accident and net the rife.'
Witness hail never heard the word "pres
sure " used iu conncctieu with an insane
case, ether than iu a physical sense ; he
presumed, it might be ucd t iudicate
sticugth of feeling. He did net think
a niau acting under Divine piessure
who should commit a horrible crime
be apt te appeal te the law and the civil
autlieiities for protection fiem the conse
quences of his act?. Witucss did net liud
a bingle circumst.iuce as narrated by the
prisoner that would indicate te his (wit
ness') mind insanity, lie was of opinion,
judging by his examination, of
the piiseueriu jail, aud fiem his observa
tion of him ia court that he is sane at this
time. Corkhill then read te the witness,
with the apparent view of its vivisection,
the liypethetic.il question of the defense,
and, turning te Mr. Scevillo, said : " Yeu
sec, Mr. Sceville, I have submitted your
own question." Mr. Sceville " Yes,
only you don't tend it with the
same emphasis you de your dwn."
Corkhill "Picsciscly se, because I don't
believe in it as I de in mine." W'tness re
plied : "I would net like te answer that
hypothetical question, because it evident
ly means te apply te the prisoner, and I
could net answer it if rcfeiriug te him,
knowing what I de of him. Frem my
ownebscivation and examination I cannot
answer it as a hypothetical case, hecause
in my judgment it docs net describe an
insane state." Witness then analyzed the
question clause by clause aud severely,
criticized it. Cel. Corkhill then read the
lengthy hypothetical questions of the
prosecution.
