"Washington, Dec. 27. -The seventh
week of the Guiteau trial opened with no
diinunitien in the crowd pressing for ad
mission. Upen epeniner of court Guiteau
smilingly announced that he had enjoyed
a nice Christmas dinner, and hoped every
body else did. He said he had fruits,
flowers, lady visitors and a geed time gen
crally.
Dr. A. E. McDonald, superintend
ent of Ward's Island ( N. Y. )
insane hospital, testified that he had
treated six thousand cases of insanity. He
believed from his observations that the
claim of inspiration asserted by insane
people proceeds from some insane delusion
aflecting the senses. In illustration of
men acting under such delusion he
instanced a man who thought he
was Jesus Christ, and who clothed
liimself like the Saviour, gave away his
property, and slept out-doers. The insane
delusion is manifested by their actions as
well as their assertions. Witness thought
such a lunatic would entertain no fear of
bodily harm, his "inspiration" rendering
him wholly oblivious te fears of assault.
Such people never planned schemes, aud
after committing an act seldom attempted
fce avert the consequences.
The prisoner suggested there were two
kinds Of iusanity, cranks aud Abraharaic
he belonged te the Abraham school.
Witness went en te say that he had
never iu all his experience seen a case
where a man is te all appearances sane ex
cept with regard te one single act.
Witness spent two hours iu the cell at
the jail with the prisoner ; examined and
talked with him, and found that the pris
oner expected te be sent te the insane
asylum, and subsequently obtain his free
dom. Wituess believed the prisoner was
a perfectly sane man. Winess had closely
analyzed the actions of the prisoner dur
ing the trial, and believes that he ;s play
ing a part new.
A recess was taken.
After the recess Dr. MacDonald aga?n
took the stand and Guiteau, who had just
taken his seat, looked ever te the jury
and said : ' These experts are doing
this business with a geed deal of parrot parret
like talk. Dr. MacDonald deviated some
what from the ceurse'pursued by the rest
of them. I deem it but justice te myself
te say that I did net say te him that I had
examined the law in relation te this mat
ter." Cel. Corkhill then read the second hy
pothetical question, upon which Guiteau
commented en passant, with such expres
sions as "That is absolutely false," "That
is that fellow Shaw's lie," " That is all
rubbish," "It is nobody's business where
I get the money," ' I did net kill him, the
doctors killed him," etc.
Tbe witness answered, "Assuming the
facts set forth te be true, and adding that
statement te the ethcrss, it strengthens
my opinion that the man was saue en the
2d of July."
Exception te tiie question aud auswer
was noted by the defence.
Cel. Reed conducted a lengthy cross cress
examination and proposed a scries of
hypothetical questions, based upon acts
and conduct of the prisoner te show that
such acts and such conduct would net be
inconsistent with the theory or insanity.
Witness admitted that insane persons
were mere liable te be atljndged sane than
sane persons were te be adjudged insane.
