THURSDAY EVENING, DEC. 167 188L
PASTOR UASKWABDT.
rOMEEAXIA, J 807.
'Twas in the Northern German land,
Fast by tlie Baltic sea,
When tlic French emperor sent his tioeps
Te lencl the people's knee,
Ami dwell within their housed,
Fce-tlng en wine and corn,
Till German hearts should learn te led
The might of foreign scorn.
They came te UeUcnstcdc,
A hamlet green and still.
With fountain in the market-plucu,
Where maids their pitchers till.
They overran the village street,
They overran the inn.
They stele tlic peasants' ripening eiejw.
And strove the maid? te win :
And up and down throughout the night
They bang their ribald song,
While hidden evils darted forth
Te join the lawless toreng.
Hew lair was ISeUciislcdc!
J!ut deeds the Frenchmen wrought
Among her pleasunt summer llcMs
Ne pcacelul harvest brought.
The people soiled the soldiers,
And bore them te the strand.
And shipped them te a bain n Mieic
Within a hostile land,
And then returned lejeieini; ;
Rut he, the nations' late,
(Quickly dispatched a mightier cei ps
Te held the cenqucicd stale.
Alas ler JJedenstcdc !
Hew sad the sun arose
That day the feieigu Hags lcluiin d
lieleie his golden close !
Rede leith Commander ileitiei .
"ScUeall the men," hi: cried,
"Wlie rule in Redcnstede.
And place them side by side:
"And at the signal given,
.Sheet each man where he standi.
They tnat remain shall li'c te see
Their blazing homes and lands."
Then ferwaid stepped the pastor ;
His eyes were bright n llainc ;
"11 any man is shot, sheet me !
Mine is the guilt and shame.
"I bade the people te revolt.
And drag the men away;
I sent them te the Swedish shesc ;
'Twas I urged en the fray.
"Hear me, Osiic, hew innocent
These people surely aic ;
1 pray thee burn my guilty root
Hut all these ethers spare."
The stern Commander 3Ieitier
Heard what tlic pastor said.
One moment steed irresolute,
Then turned his horse's head ;
And pulling spins te 11. ink, they leile
Out Irem the wondering town ;
And as tliey passed, the word was gi en,
"These lishcr-huts burn down !"
A Jen peer sheds whcie no man ducli :
Ne bleed that day was spilled.
.Viid thus Commander Jlortier
The Lmperer'.s law fulfilled.
These battle-llelds uic oveigiewn.
Dim is their glory new;
!!ut Vlituc ever nakel ill shim-. :
The stars aic en her luew,
1'lic p.ister in In-, llouinggenn.
Rehire the a: med host,
.leyiully giving lifeuud home
It he may -ave the le-t:
Deep In the Gel man lather-land
This rooted memory grows.
And s lie within the ehildren s hc.iit
The m lug picture glows.

A JniiuIh it'll Island Millionaire.
The richest person upon the Sandwich
Islands is Claus Spieckles, of Honolulu.
A few years age he was laughed at when
he purchased 10,000 acres of land for 10
cents an acre, as the tract was at the feet
of au extinct volcano, and covered with a
crust en the surface like a llagstenc walk.
He broke up this crust, mixed the dust
with a small quantity of vegetable mould,
thoroughly inigatcd the soil thus formed
and planted sugar cane. Te-day he is a
millionaire.
The Shoeblack Plant.
In many parts of Asia there is a plant
known as the "shoeblack," which, al
though it will net grew in cur gardens, is
net unknown in hothouses. It possesses
biilliant scarlet flowers, which yield a
thick, gummy juice, which gives a varnish
like polish te anything te which it may be
applied ; hence, its use as a substitute for
blacking en beets aud shoes. The ladies
of China arc said te use the same plant for
dyeing their hair and eyebrows.
"I Am All l'layeil Out,"

We found out long age. by actual experience, that garments bought
