THE TOBACCO MARKET.
SEED LEAF A'I HAVANA.
Fer t:ic Week Ending Saturday
December
10, IO a. m.
U. S. Tebai co Jeutnal.
Ne hntuevemcnt in the maikcl has been
noticeable. While tbc announcement of
the many failures in tbc trade has bad
a depressing influence vritU the firms di
jrctly buffering thereby, they have net af
fected the general tenor of the market.
Under eidinary circumstances such failures
and &uch prolonged quietude would surely
have caused a dewnwaid move in piiccs.
IJut eui whole seed leaf inteiest is en
veloped in cxtraeidiuary conditions, the
unabatiug activity iu manufactuxiug cir
cles being tbc prime cause. As long as
there is no sign of any, or probably but
temporal y laxatieu of this icigu of pros pres
peiity in this respect, failures and short
periods of quietude cm have no effect
whatever en the prices of seed leaf.
The market is full of rumors of impend
ing new failuics in the manufacturing
hue, and theie is little doubt but that
these rumors will te some extent be ver
ified in the near futuic. "Wc held that
such events can iu no way reflect upon the
soundness of the cigar manulacturmg ni
tcicsts in geucial. The unprccendentcd
activity iu the trade a net of a s-pccula-livc
ehaiacter, but was hi ought about by a
genuine demand fiem the consuming pub
he. These of the mauufacturcis who have
lately Sailed and will piebably fail within
the ni'xt few mouths, failed, and fail fei
every ether geed i casen but for an outlet
ler their goods. Whether the outlets fei
cigars were profitable te cveiy cigar manu
factum- is a question that has no bc.iriug
upon the prices of leaf.
Some inamifaciuiers have failed, and
will fail, whether the cost of wrapper is
live cents or fifty cents a pound. Iu a cigai
manufacturing business the cost of leaf is
a secondary considciatieu ; manipulation
of the leaf, management of the business,
and, above all, the ait of calculating the
cost of a made up cigar (something which
ihe majority of the nianufactuiers aie un
able te de) constitute the mam featuics of
success m this uusinev. liicicleic the
picscnt cry that the old tobacco is tee
high and the new one still higher, and
that it will be a haid task te dispose of it
