leek exceedingly beautiful, having their
holiday goods tastefully displayed.
There is some talk about building a sum
mer hotel at Keuud Tep.

This morning the adjourned term of
quaiter sc-siens court begau. The list is
short, but a number of the esses down for
trial aic of hih grade of crime, Judge

Judge Livingston piesided upstairs.
The case of Emanuel Gundaker, charged
with felonious assault and battery en Ed
waid Cdc, was continued en account of
the phscucc of Jehn Sales, a material wit
ness fei th! defense, who is new in the
West and has het been subpe.-nacd.
The liist ca.-c attached was that of
Cem'th v.s Henry Newcomer, charged with
larceny as bailee of a let of liout-cheld
goods, the property of Stephen Younger,
of Columbia. After heating the evidence
for t'.ie commonwealth the ceutt stated
that tlii'ie was no ciime in Hie case which
should havt, been brought in common
pleas ceint, and eideicd a vcidict of net
4 guilty te 1)0 lendcicd.
Cem'th vs. Jehn II. Shiead, of this city,
larceny. The defendant was chaigcd
with taking a keg of beer fiem a wagon of
.1. A. Spicngcr, which was standing eji
Chinch stieet, en the 17th day of Sep
tember lat. It was proven by scveial
witnesses that Shiead took the beer and
walked oil with it.
The defense admitted that they took the
beer but without any felonious intent. On
this day Shiead was se drunk that he did
net knew anything, and met some com!
paniens en Church stieet, near where the
beer wagon was. One of the men asked
hiiii wheic he was going and told
him that they would seen have a keg of
beer as the wagon was there
with it en, and it was taking
it up te a house where they could drink it.
Oue of the men told Sliread te go and take
the keg of bcr,as he had eidercd it and it
was all light; lie thought the beer had
been paid for and took it home ; he did

newly-elected register, presented his state
bend in the sum of $25,000, with YV. L.
Peiper and II. C. Lcaman, of this city,and

A Church 111-iuitc.
Fer some lime past there has been
trouble among the eoleicd brethren who
weiship at the chinch in Feagleysville.
The prepcity was held in trust by a beard
of tiusices, of whom Rev. M. M. Biggs
was one of the most active, and by whose
labors a considerable part of the cost of
the building was raised. A portion of the
congregation became hostile te Mr. Diggs
for some icasen or ether and tiied te
oust him. He s-ays they oppose him
because lie is a Democrat. Recently
Edwaid Hunter purchased the property
but has net paid for it. The Diggs fac
tion, having about 120 in it, claimed the
light te worship thcteiu until they get
their money out, and it was announced
that Rev. M. M. Diggs would preach theic
yesterday. The Hunter party determined
te pievcnt it, iiud appeared at the church
armed with clubs. There was seme ex
citement, but Hunter held the feit, the
Diggsites net ventniing te attack and dis
possess them.

Will Grever's pantomime troupe exhib
ited hcic last Monday night and gave a
very fair show. They appeared in Noriis Neriis Noriis
tewu en Thursday night and gave a show
which f-alislied a small audience. In the
morning following the company found
that their funds would net reach. They
ondeavercd te sell ene of the large dogs
which they had for 675, but found no pur
chaser. They were billed for l'ottstewn
en Friday night and in some way they
managed te get out of Xonistew without
disposing of any of the canines. They
were te have been iu Harrisburg en Satur
day night, but did net put in an appear
ance, and it is supposed that, the troupe
has gene te pieces.

On Saturday afternoon the cooper shop
of Henry Pciiiman, situated iu the village
of Warwick, "Warwick township was des
troyed by lire, together with a let of tools,
lumber tec. The less en the whole will
amount te about $200 and there was an j
insurance- of $109. The building is sup- j
posed te have caught from a stove, as J
there was no ene in the shop when it
started.

Miss Lillie Ilinteu, the brilliant young
actress who appears in Fulton opera
house this evening as Leah, is only 18
years old, a native of Columbia and an oc
casional visitor te this city, where she also
has relatives and friends.

Annual Bar Association Meeting.
The annual meeting of the Lancaster
Bar association was held in the big
court room at 2 p. m. today. The
officers of the association for the past year
were : President, II. M. North ; Vice
President, D. G. Eshlcraau ; Treasurer, S.
II. Reynolds ; Secretary, "V. A. "Wilsen ;
Censers, H. B. Swarr, D. G. Baker, M.
Brosius, II. C. Brubakcr, "W. U. Ilensel.

The treasurer's report showed a balance of
some $30 in the treasury. A number of
members of the bar were elected members
of the association. S. II. Reynolds, A. J.

Fifth Week or tbe National Comedy.
Washington, Dec. 12. The fifth week
of the Guiteau trial commenced with un
abated interest. Dr. Edward Charles
Spitzka, of New Yerk, testified that he
believed the prisoner insane, and that he
was a moral monstrosity. The
cress examination was quite pointed,
regarding witness' standing as an expert
and bis'positien as professor at a veterinary
scnoei. w itncss said ne was net asbamed
of that branch of study.
Mr. Davidge inquired if it were net
what is commonly called a "horse doc
tor." Witness,rcddening, and with some excite
ment said, " My treatment has been con
fined te asses when an ass with two legs
asks me a stupid question I endeavor te
treat him as he deserves. (General laugh-
tcrat expense of counsel.)
Witness then stated that he had visited
the jail under an assumed name as a phre
nologist se as te study the prisoner better.
He found him vain with a geed memory
and the attainments efathird-i ate shyster
lawyer, but convinced of the delusion that
he had sacrificed himself for the geed of
the American people. Wituess would net
express an opinion en the moral responsi
bility of the prisoner. The latter became
very angry again when the subject of his
"depravity " was leferrcd te and asked
the prosecution net te harp en that subject.

Funeral el the Late Cel. Ferney Distin
guished People Present Meeting of
Journalist.
Philadelphia, Dsc. 12. The funeral
of the late Cel. Jehn W. Ferney took place
at eue o'clock thisaftcrnean. Fer several
hours a. line of men, women and children,
representing many classes of society enter
ed the house and viewed the remains.
Many prominent citizens were present,
including Generals Hancock, Sickles
and Huff, ex-Speaker Kaudalf, Mayer
King and ether city eflicials ; Geerge
W. Cliikls, Jehn Russell Yeung, A. Iv.
McCIurc, and many ether well known
journalists. All the pall bearers selected
were present. The interment took place
in West Laurel Hill cemetery.
At a meeting of newspapcr publishers
and editors held this morning and pre
sided ever by William Mclvean, appropri
ate resolutions of condolence with the
family of the deceased were passed, and it
was resolved te attend .the funeral in a
body.

meeting was held here, presided ever by
the mayor, and passed appropriate resolu

Philadelphia, Dec. 12. At the inquest
te-day en the body of Bernard McMahon,
who was murdered by burglars en Friday
evening, none of the witnesses were able
te identify the prisoner Uarr. The jury,
however, returned the following verdict :
"That B. McMahon came te his death from
internal hemorrhage, the results of a
gunshot weuud received en Friday, De
cember 9th, at the hands of cither the
priseuer, Barr, Daniel Watsen or Benja
miu Allen, and that Mrs. Barr was accc.';
sery befere the fact." Beth Barr and his
reputed wife were committed te await the
action of the district attorney.
Shet at a Doorstep.
Eminence, Ky., Dec. 12. Jeseph War
ford, of Shelby county, was killed en Satur
day night by Alex. Shirley. Shirley says
Warfeid called te his deer en the night
and fired a pistol shot, which wounded
him. He then fired at Warford and took
te his bed from pain. Warford was
found dead the next morning and Shirley
is in a dangerous condition.

Fatally Burned.
In Providence, It. I., Mrs. Mary Cauuh Cauuh
ten, while drunk, in attempting te fill a
keresene lamp, spilled oil en her dress
and the lloer. She then lighted the lamp
with a match en t e lloer. Her clothes
caught fire and she was probably fatally
burned. She was taken te the hospital.

Vienna, Dec. 12. The common grave
for the unrecognized victims of the thea
tre fire, in the Central cemetery, is 150 feet
long and 14 feet wide.
Mysterious Disappearance.

Just Vengeance.
Gertrude Dyker, a German girl, aged
twenty, was waylaid by by Ellswerth
Crenning, at Milltown, N. J., and feloni
ously assaulted. Soen after her brother
met Crenning and killed him with a shot
gun. Yeung Dyker then escaped en horse
back. The desire te capture him is net
great.
