FRIDAY EVENING, DEC. 0, 1881.
The Sefcsen'8 HwtlBg.
rientitiilnnH or Wild Game la the Northern
Pennsylvania Weeds.
Deer and bear hunters in tbe Penn
sylvania and adjoining New Yerk weeds
had unusually line sport this fall. A party
from JSewburg c&tnpea last weeic in tne
neighborhood of Black Lake, Sullivan
county. They took away three deer and
a bear, besides 140 partridges. They
claim te have started forty deer, and' that
the bear they killed was only one of a
dozen they saw. One day last week a
local hunter, Ira Milspaugh, was treed by
a bear near Mongaup, Sullivan county.
He frightened the bear away by his ter
rific yells for help.
The New Yerk sportsmen, Eddy and
McGowan, spent two days deer-hunting
near Milferd, Pa., recently. The first day
out a bis doe was driven within twenty
yards of where McGowan was standing, in
plain sight. McGowan didn't sheet, but
shouted te Sheriff Ridgway, who was in
another part of the grounds, that one of
the biggest heifer calves he'd ever seen
had just run by him. That was the same
day that Jake Scherr, of Milferd, one of
the party, fell asleep en the runway, and
when he woke up and saw a big buck
standing ever him chewing a white hat he
were, broke for the read as fast as he
could go. The party brought in one fine
deer, however, but no one knew who
killed it. A fine young buck was killed
within sight of Lackawaxen station, en
Eric, Pike county, last week. Sheriff Jee
Atkinson, of Wayne county, a famous
hunter, has had time te take only one
dav's hunt this season. He spent the
dayinPaupack regien, Pike county, and
killed two deer. He says there are mere
bears in the backwoods of that county
than have been known for years.
Hugh .Ionian, of Kettle Creek, Petter
county, Pa., is eue of the greatest hunters
in northern Pennsylvania. He prefers
bear-hunting and trapping. He has cap
tured twenty-nine bears in that region
this season. His last capture was a bear
that weighed 000 pounds. The hide alone
weighed fifty. The bear measured twelve
inches between the eyes. It was the
largest animal of the kiud ever killed in
the county. Petter is the only county in
Pennsylvania where there is net a single
mile of railroad. The Erie runs within a
few miles of the northern border Wclls
ville, Allegheny county, N. Y., being the
nearest railroad station. The county is
mere than one half wilderness. Until re
cently its forests were frequented only by
hunters and bark peelers. Recently " wild
cat" oil operators, prospeeting for petro
leum, have Hocked te its mountains, and
the backwoods natives are fearful that oil
may be discovered and their favorite hunt
ing grounds destroyed. The fact that wild
laud would increase in value from $3 an
aero te $200 an aero if oil should be found
is nethinir when weighed acainst the preb
ability that the deer and bears will be
driven away.
