and a number of congressmen were pres
ent at the Guiteau trial te-day te witness
the opening of the prosecution in rebut
tal. As seen as court opened Guiteau de
manded that President Arthur, Grant,
Conkling, Piatt and ethers be subpoenaed
as the gist of his defense was the Delitical
situation in May last. After that he said
he thought a geed deal of President Ar
thur, and did net want him dragged into
court. Thumping the desk, he said, "I
don't want him bothered with this matter.
He's president of the United States and I
made him se, and I think I should have
something te say in the matter.''
General Sherman was then called te the
stand, but simply recited the military,
order he had issued at the time of the
assassination.

& Leng Branch railroad company, which is

adoption of this agreement obviates the
necessity of building a new line between
the points named as was recently contem

In the resolution of Mr. Cameren, of
Pennsylvania, in Tuesday's proceedings,
the word "inexpedient" was erroneously
substituted for "expedient." The reso
lution reads : " That in the opinion of the
Scnate it is expedient te reduce the rev
enue of the government by abolishing all
existing internal revenue taxes except
these imposed upon high wines and dis
tilled spirits.".
Kissed His Wife and then Killed Her.
Fall Kivek, Mass., Dec. 7. Frank
Sharen, a young barber, who had been
arrested in consequence of treuble with
hiswife, went home last night, entered
her room, kissed her three times and then
shot her as she lay asleep. She died
almost instantly. The murderer gave
himself up.
