Condition or the Creps The Rainfall The
Sanitary Condition or the Farmer's
Heme Night Markets, and Other
Timely Topics.
A stated meeting of the Lancaster Agri
cultural and Horticultural society was
held in their room in city hall yesterday
afternoon.
The following named members and visi
tors were present : Jeseph P. Witmer,
president, Paradise ; M. D. Kendig, secre
tary, Creswell ; Dr. C. A. Greene, city ;
Frank R. Diffenderffer, city ; James
Weed, Little Britain ; Jehn C. Linvill,
Salisbury ; Cyrus Neff, Maner ; B Frank
Landis, East Lampeter; Simen P. Eby,
city ; C. A. Gast, city ; J. M. Johnsten,
city ; Calvin Cooper, Bird-iu-Hand : Jehn
H. Landis, Maner ; Jehnsen Miller, War
wick; Wm. II. Brosius, Drumere; J.
Heffman Hcishcy, Saluuga ; C. L. Hun
seeker, Manhcim ; Walter Ileiuitsh, city ;
Peter S. Reist, city ; Levi S. Reist, Ore
gan ; Epb. S. Hoever, Manhcim.
Crep Beperts.
Reports being called for as te the condi
tion of the crops, Jehn C. Linvill, of
Salisbury, reported that the wheat and
grass in that section of the county looked
remarkably well, lie also stated, as a
curious circumstance, that while the peach
crop in that neighborhood was almost an
entire failure there were several trecs en a
ridge with a northern exposure, between
the Pequea and the Gap, that bore abun
dantly. The trees steed perhaps 150 feet
above the level of the surrounding coun
try iu which all the peaches had been
killed by the excessive cold of last winter.
B. Frank Landis, of East Lampeter, re
ported grass and wheat in very geed con
dition in his neighborhood. The rain-fall
during the past month was 2J inches. The
priucipal part of the new tobacco had
been sold ; much of it had recently been
taken from the poles aud showed a geed
deal of white vein.
Cyrus Neff and M. D. Kendig, of Maner,
reported the grass and fall wheat as being
very rank, and Mr. Kendig reported the
rainfall for .November at J 4-1U inches.
President Witmer reported that in Para
dise the grain aud grass looked well ; a
geed deal of tobacco was taken from the
poles but net much had been sold. A
week age he took occasion te test the pro
duct of a fresh Aldcrney cow, and he
found that she yielded 10 pounds of but
ter in ene week. Under laverable circum
stances he thought the yield would have
been larger.
Sanitary Condition of Farmers' lleusy.
J. C. Linvill read the following cbsay :
Why should net farmers be the health
iest people in the world ? Perhaps they
are, and yet when ene gees te any assem
bly in the winter season he will notice a
vast amount of coughing and blowing of
noses. When you inquire of your neigh
bor regarding the health of his family the
stereotyped reply is, iu case nene is hick,
"all well except bad colds."
Bad colds, (who ever heard of colds that
are net "bad,") often lead te something
worse.
Our houses arc made tee nearly air-tight.
Patent weather strips an'l tarred sheathing
paper are the twin curses of modern house
building. Our grandfathers buikled
better than they knew. A leg cabin with
a great rearing weed lire en the open
hearth afforded better ventilation than all
the contrivances of the architect. But tlic
days of the' leg cabin aud open weed Hies
are past.
The weather strips and sheathing paper
de net necessarily make the house un
healthy. Any one who cares for his
health will lcave his bed-room window an
inch or two open in winter. Of course
this defeats the very object of the above
mentioned contrivance, which is te keep
the cold and pure air out, aud the foul and
warm air in. Warm air is net necessarily
impure, but speedily becomes foul in air
tight apartments.
Better far te burn a ten or two mere
coal and breathe pure air than te inhale
carbonic acid gas and have cold and con
sumptien aud death.
I have in my "mind's eye" farmers'
houses where cvery pathway about the
heuseyard is laid with beards and daily
scrubbed te scrupulous whiteness aud a
feet mat meets you at every augle and in
vites you te clean your beets, and where
the tinware en the kitchen walls shiue re
splendent and the stove is as black as
" Rising Sun polish " cau make it ; and
yet when the cellar deer is opened thcre
ceme up smells that are net
" Sabenn odors
Frem the spicy shores
Ot Araby the blest."
The poet Coleridge counted thicc hun
dred and sixty-five separate aud distinct
smells in the city of Cologne. I have never
yet been able te make a lull analysis of
the scents of an average cellar, but think
the numbers -will net ran se high as in
the perfumed city abeve mentioned.
Beets, potatoes, turnips and cabbages
give up their fragrance, te say nothing of
odoriferous saucr kraut and salt flsh. The
smell of apples even, is unbearable when
confined te the house. These things
should all be kept in a cellar at the barn,
or in some outbuilding convenient te the
dwelling.
The subject matter of the essay was
discussed by Dr. Greene, S. P. Eby, Jes.
F. Witmer and Calvin Cooper, all of whom
agreed substantially with the essayist, and
urged the importauce of a thorough venti
lation of cellars.. Mr. Cooper said he had
constructed a house with a chimney at
each end of it and had constructed a llue
leading from the cellar into each chimney,
and be found it an oxccllent means of
keeping the air of the cellar pure.
Dr. Greene read the following paper :
Night Markets.
The Puritans brought te this country
seme curious useless customs, and the
march of civilization has steadily wiped
many of them out, but in a few cities aud
towns of a portion of the state the irra
tional custom has continued of farmers
getting up at midnight or a little later
and starting with their produce for the
centre of the town or city where, with the
aid of candles and ether artificial lights,
they sell their various commodities. This
foolish custom obligates the purchasers of
their goods, also te put themselves te the
very greatest inconvenience, of also weak
ening nature's laws, and also rising at
such unseasonable hears. New all of
these night markets are entirely useless
and unnecessary, and there are serious ob
jections te continuing them. The first is
that the night is intended for, and man and
animals must, te be healthy, get their al
lotted time of sleep. Second is that it is
exceedingly unpleasant for all concerned
te get up. It has a tendency te ruiu the
health of both man and animal. The
peer horse is often, daring market hours,
especially injwinter, "Tritcbed te a pest in
the street, and for hears he stands there
shivering. New, all of this can easily be
done away with, and if the people who
bay the previsions could cast their votes
they would vote te abolish them.
rarmers In FeUtlcr.
Jehn H. Landis read a long essay, or
"oration," as some of the members pres
ent termed it, en the above subject. His
object was te show that the farmer should
take a greater interest in politics than he
is went te take, and that he is really
better fitted te creditably fill most of the
important offices of the state and nation
thau the huckstering politicians who gen
erally secure them. He fortified his pesi
tien by quoting from the great statesman,
James G. Blaine, " the next president of
the United States ! " A bread grin over
spread the face of almost every man
in the assemblage, when Statesman Lan
dis in this formal manner nominated
Statesman Blaine for the presidency in
1884. Statesman Landis concluded with a
grand and stunning peroration ; where
upon Statesman W. H. Brosius, defeated
candidate for Assembly, Statesman C. L.
Hunsccker, defeated caudidate for Assem
bly, and Statesman Jehnsen Miller, defeat
ed candidate for Assembly, sprang succes
sively te their feet, and after declaring
themselves te be farmers and nothing but
farmers, avowed their belief that farmers
were by all etlds the safest men te send te
the Assembly and te Congress and ether
places wherein they could serve the inter
ests of the farmers and the dear people in
general.
Manure.
Frem the ridiculous te' the practical is
but a step ; and se the next question
tackled by the statesmen farmers was,
' ' What is the best time te apply manure ?"
Mr. Brosius beheved that manure made
during the winter should be applied in the
spring te the corn, tobacco and ether
spring crops ; and that made during the
spring aud summer should be applied te
wheat and grass iu the fall. He believes
manures lese much of their fertilizing
property by lying in bulk during a whole
year.
B. Frank Landis favered the plowing
down of manure as seen as it is applied te
the ground ; it loses by lying en the sur
face of the ground.'
J.C. Linville, en the ether band, thought
it best te spread en the surface and leave
it exposed te het sunshine and drenching
rains. Leng or imperfectly composted
manure, however should be plowed down
at once.
James Weed thought it best te plow in
the manure if intended for wheat, but te
let lie en the surface for grass crops.
Calvin Cooper said that one of the best
farmers he ever knew let the manure lie
en the surface for all his crops wheat as
well as ethers. "He preserved his manure
a year ahead of the time he wanted it for
use, and thus it becomes thoroughly com
posted. S. P. Eby, J. Frank Landis aud ethers
gave their views en the subject.
Business for Next Sleeting.
The following questions were offered
for discussion at the next meeting.
" Can the grain crewcr dispense with
nitrogenous fertilizers?" Referred te
C.isppr Ililler.
"Can dairy cows be kept in healthy
condition by the soiling system, and is the
butter of as geed quality ?" Referred te
J. Frank Landis.
u Ou;ht rank crewing wheat te be pjs
tured .": Referred te James Weed.
"What is the best time te plow laud for
spring crops?" Referred te Jehn C. Lin
vill. Fruits Exhibited.
Calvin Cooper, Jehn II. Landis and
Simen P. Eby, were appointed a commit
tee te examine and report upon fruits ex
hibited by Levi S. Reist. They reported
that there were geed specimens of the old
Redstrcak and Smith's cider apple, and an
unusually line bunch of grafted persim
mons oHarge size and fine flavor.
