Washington, Dec. 3 Seventeen out of
the eighteen members of the Pennsylvania
delegation held a conference this morning,
at which, after seme discussion, all the
members prescut agreed te vote for Gen.
Keifer, as speaker. The absentee was Mr.
Bayne, who seut word that he will vote
for Mr. Hiscock. It was also decided by
the seveutecn members te support AVui.
Bunn, ex-register of wills of Philadelphia
for election as scrgcaiit-at-anns. Five of
the members announced themselves iu
favor of Elw. McPherseu for the position
of clerk of the Heuse, but it finally was
decided that the delegation should net
make an effort te elect a Pennsylvania man
te that office, but favor its being giveu te
some New Yerker, probably Mr. Jehnsen.
The result of the Pennsylvania conference
is generally regarded as highly favorable
te the prospects of Keifcr's success, but
the ether prominent candidates still pre
fess undiminished ceniidence. It was an
nounced tli:l Mr. Keim's name bad becu
withdrawn Hern the list of candidates for
the office of clerk.

Washington, Dec. 3. There was no
diminution iu the crowd at the court room
this morning. Among ths witnesses called
was Emery A. Sterrs, of Chicago. He de
tailed Guiteau's conduct iu Washington its
an office-seeker ; could net express an
opinion en the prisoner's sanity, but bo be
licvcd he possessed an ill-balanced mind,
though he never saw anything in his con
duct te indicate that he (the prisoner)
could net distinguish between right and
wrong. This evidence seemed te stagger
the defence Guiteau's sister became par
ticularly excited, and was heard te ex
claim, " He has perjured himself !"
Matter la Mexico.
Mexico, Nev. 30. An attempt was
made Saturday te murder Gee. Manuel
Dede, of Guanajuato, by two men who
had been instigated by his political cno cne
mies. Much party feeling has existed in
Guanajuato.
Gen. Ord has gene te Oaxaca, as a re
presentative of the Mexican Southern rail
way, te be present at the inauguration of
Gen. Diaz as governor of the state aud
specially bent by Gen. Grant.

Washington, Dec. 3. J. Hyatt Smith,
representative-elect from Brooklyn, N. Y..
announced this morning that he will net
go into the Republican caucus, but will
vete with the Grccnbackcrs for Mr. Ladd
for speaker and Mr. DeLaMatyr for clerk
of the Heuse.
A later dispatch announces, however,
that he went into the caucus at the last

The Suit Against the City tJas Trust Stepped.
Philadelphia, Dec. 3. In the court
of common pleas this morning President
Judge Allisen delivered a lengthy decision
in the case et the city against the gas
trust, in which it is held that the city so
licitor had net authority te institute the
suit and it is therefore stepped until suf
ficient warrant of attorney can be filed.
Judges Pcirce and Biddle concur in this
opinion.
Policeman Shet by a Negro.
Philadelphia, Dec. 3. Police Officer
Watsen arrested a colored man early this
morning in the Twenty-eighth ward, en
suspicion of being a burglar. The pris
oner quickly thrust a pistol close up te the
officer's body and fired, the ball taking
effect in the abdomen. The officer fell
dangerously. wounded, and the uogrejmade
geed his escape.

Londen, Dec. 3. The Times in an edi
torial article this morning, discussing the
system of allowing prisoners te give evi
dence, says : " The incidents of Guiteau's
trial ought net te prejudice our decision
in regaid te this important question. His
boisterous vanity would . h'ave insured
scenes at his trial under any system."

New Yerk, Dec. 3. The jury iu the
Celes murder case came into court at 11
o'clock this morning, with a verdict of
murder in the third degree against Mrs.
Celeman. The prisoner and her mother
and realtiveSf were in court and cried bit
terly. The highest sentence by law is
four years.
A Horrlble Discovery.
ScitAisxeN, Pa., Dec. 3. The body of
an unknown man wes found in an aban
doned chamber of the Bellevue shaft last
night, with the bands and face entirely
eaten away by rats. Frem the appearance
of the clothing, the body had been there
for the last live years.
