DISSECTING AN " INSPIRED" VOLUME. The Afsns-dn'a Boek " Truth " Showing Sim ilarities of Idea and PhraM wltb a Previous Production et Shaker eyes,Whlcn Gulteau Endeav ors te Explain Away His Evangelizing labors. L Washington, Dec. 2. While passing trem tue van te tun court liouse tins morn ing Gr.itcau remarked upon the small number of people waiting te see him, and wondered if interest in the great trial was waning. His geed health and confidence in a faverable verdict seem never te fail him. Upen the opening of court he was at once placed in the witness box and de clared his intention net te answer any mere questions that are mere repetitions of what he had already answered. The cress-examination being lesumcd by Perter, Guiteau said oue of bis reasons for removing the president was te create a demand for his book, lie seen became excited, aud gesticulating wildly, insisted upon his Di vine inspiration, and that he w.ts no feel He frequently declined te answer ques tions, or, as he said himself, " te discuss the subject ;" and finally appealed te the court for protection. He then made very cautious auswers when he replied at all te Judge Perter's cress questioning. Ccl. Corkhill read a document which had a bhert time befere been placed in. evidence. It set forth at great length Guiteau's purpose and ideas upon the " theocratic" press, which at tbat time he desired te establish, and claimed inspi ration from the Deity ; that he (Guiteau) " was werkiug for Jesus Christ & Ce., the strengc&t firm in the world." " These were my sentiments !" shouted Guiteau, "and that was inspiration. It was the same inspiration that led me twelve years after te go about from heuse te house as St. Paul did,te preach the Gos pel and save souls. It was the same in spiration, but society wasn't prepared for my ideas ; that was all the trouble." Judge Perter produced Guiteau's book, "Truth," and compared it paragraph by paiagraph with the "Bercaii," written by Jehn Nbycs. The similarity of ideas and identity of expression were apparent all through, and the prisoner struggled des perately te explain away his palpable pla giarisms. In another letter Guiteau asked that-he be allowed te return te the community and confessed that the magnitude of the un dertaking te publish a daily theocratic newspaper appalled even his audac ity, and that the best way for him te serve Ged was te lead a Christian life. Witness believed in the personal ex istence of a Deity and a devil, and when the impulse te remove the president seized him he wrestled and prayed te find if it came from the Lord or the devil, and if it had net been for the goedof our country witness would net have shot the prcsicTe it. Witness was then asked, " Are you in sane at all?" and replied. "Let the ex perts and jury decide that." He was askcu if he laid in wait for the president in an alley by night aud said, " New you arc en that I'll give you a lit tle uew.r." Witness then detailed his movements up te the time he saw the president and Blaine emerge from the house of the latter aud walk down 15th street. Said Guiteau: "They walked along se lovingly arin-iu arm, had their heads together like two school girls ; their fellowship was delightful and it confirmed me in the belief that Garfield had sold himself, body and soul, te Blaine, and that Blaine was using him te ruin the stal warts." Guiteau hetc became fuiieusly excited and violently denounced Blaine, who he said wanted te ruin the Republican party, and shouted " Yes. sir, and in my opinion Blaine is morally responsible for Garfield's death."
