THE GUITEAU TRIAL.
Infinity te be the Cnief Line of Defense.
Washington, 2sev. 22. Guiteau ar
livcd at court without rcithap this inoni ineni
itig. aud expressed his satisfaction at the
increase of his guards te six. The court
ioeui was crowded. Several medical ex
perts, summoned by the defetise, are in
attendance, among them Dr. Rice, of Wis.
eenstii, who it is said advised Guitcau's
commitment te au insane asylum four
years age.
Mr. Sceville resumed his argument aud
called the jury's attention te the plea of
insanity set up by the delcnse, antl dis
cussed at great length the growth and
changes of public opiuien upon the sub
ject of iusauity and its treatment by courts
when set as defense in criminal cases.
Dining the progress of 3Ir. Sceville's
argument Guiteau leaned back in his chair,
stroked his beaid, and apparently followed
him closely. Occasionally he would make
some notes aud engage in a brief whisp
ered colloquy with his brother. At one
point Mr. Sceville, in detailing the mere
enlightened treatment of the insane new
in vogue at. the asylums, said : " Iu ether
weitls. these in ehatge of the asylums act
with a little mete reason than de the in
mates.'' This sally seemed te amuse
Guiteau immensely, and a bread smile
broke ever his features, which reappeared
two or three times as if his mind recurred
te it. .Mr. Seevil'e alluded te the preju
dice which undoubtedly r i ted against
the plea of insanity geneiaiiy, and espe
cially iu llm ease of tlie prisoner, llcsaid
the newspapers had intimated than Guiteau
was only feigning insanity, aud such seem
ed te be the general theory of the public.
Guiteau turned uneasily in his chair, and
with a quick, nervous articulation said
'" 1 never feign, 1 act myself, sane or in
sane." Without noticing the interruption, Mr.
Sceville alluded te the arrest of a matt at
the time of Hayes's iuauguntieu who
was s-ettt te the insane asylum. This
in. in. he said, had as carefully
made all his arrangements te kill Hayes
as tlid Guiteau te kill President Gartield,
and but for his arrest might have suc
ceeded. Theie was just as much ground
te indicate Guitcau's insanity. "Why,"
said Mr. Sceville, "even President Gar
field said, 'Why did this man de it, he
tiiusL be in-ane?, Mr. Blaine must have
believed Guiteau " Cel. Corkhill here
arose and with much emphasis said : " If
you will allow me, Mr. Sceville, the presi
dent never said he thought he was insane,
lie thought him sane all the time. Mr.
Iilaine never thought him insane. lie has
said under oath that he believes him te be
::ane."
Mr. Sceville explained that he spoke
from information derived from the uews
paiier.; and would net take issue en the
statement lie then took up the history
of the Guiteau family, who were of Hugue
not extraction, and who had, he said, re
tained te the present day as a marked
charnctctistie the sturdy
te teligieus convictions,
caused the expatriation
Huguenots. lie asserted
adherence
which
of the
that in-
sanity was hereditary in the family and
te some degicc affected Guitcau's father.
G nil rati interjected Sceville's speech
with frequent remarks of his own, alter
nately appearing pleased or displeased
with the line of his counsel's argument.
He was greatly amused at Sceville's re
ferences in soma of the freaks of his hey hoy hoy
