Walnut street, Columbia, Pn. THIED EBITIOK SATURDAY EVENING, NOV. 19, 1881. GARFIELD'S BACKBONE PRODUCED IN COURT THIS MORNING. TMESENSATION OF THIS GKEAT TRIAL. A Sertien or the Late Presiaeufs Vertebrie Shown bv the District Attorney and IdcntilieU by Dr. JU1!. Othvr Incidents of the Semion. Washington, D. C, Nev. 19. The crowd at tbe Guiteau trial te-day was greater than ever. At uinc o'clock Gui teau arrived at the court house without demonstration, and was taken te the prisoner's room. He ate a hearty break fast. Mr. Scevillc, iu speaking of Gui teau's auueuucemcnt of Judge Magruder's .services, said he had net heard of it and that he did net expect any assistance ex cept Robinson. Court opened without incident. Geerge C. Mayuard, an elect licau. testified te leaning Guiteau $23, which seemed te give eileuse te the prisoner, and he re marked that that was nobody's business. The district attorney said he expected te show that Guiteau borrowed the money from Mayr.ard te buy his pistol. On cress-examination witness said Guiteau looked seedy and hungry. At this the prisoner showed much feeling and fre quently interrupted wittie-s, saying he lived in first-class style. J. N. Burkhart, Maynatd's clerk, testi fied te the leau of money, and said he thought Guitcau's walk aud the way he held his head a little pccul'.ir. Later en Guiteau said he wanted addi tional counsel aud remarked. There are a number of disreputable characters about the court, and some threats of violence have been made. I have no fears for my personal safety. The chief of police has kindly furnished me with a body guard, but I wish te notify all evil-disposed persons, that if they attempt te harm me, my body guard will sheet them down. That's all there is about it then." He added, " Reporters, put that down." Colonel Rockwell next test ilitd te scenes at the depot when Scevillc interposed ac knowledging the killing. Guiteau (quickly) Ne, your honor, we acknowledge the sheeting, but net the killing." The next wituess was Gen. Swaim, and both testified te Garfield's condition. The latter showed the nature of the president's wound, using a wire skeleton for the pur pose. The sensation of the trial was produced when Dr. Bliss was called, and the district attorney suddenly drew from a pasteboard box a section of a human backbeue, and holding it up inquired. "De you recognize this, doctor'.'" The audience huug breathless upeu the auswer, as the witness in measured tones replied : I de ; it is a portion of the vertebra; of the late President James A. Garfield." The vertebra: was then handed around among the jury and the nature of the in jury explained by Dr. Bliss. His testi mony was followed with the greatest atten tion by the cntire audience except the pris oner, who devoted himself te his papers. 3Ir. Scevillc examined the fragment of bone, when Guiteau also inspected it closely, though he never touched it. He gave no indication of feeling beyond the exhibition of casual curiosity. A recess was tlicu taken before the testimony of Dr. Bliss was finished. Upen the reassembling of court Dr. Bliss resumed his testimony. He was cress-examined at great length, but main tained that the wound was a mortal one. Dr. Key burn was also sworn aud as sisted Dr. Bliss te explain the case. A t the conclusion of Bliss' evideucc, the dis trict attorney inquired if the defense in tended te pursue the same course of ex amination with all medical witnesses. Mr. Robinson replied : About the same. " Mr. Corkhill thereupon announced that the proscutien had intended te close to day, but new he thought best te as.k post ponement. Guiteau here attempted te say some thing when the district attorney, bowing with mock gravity, continued : ,l It Mr. Guiteau will permit, your honor, I will move an adjournment." Guiteau appeared te relish the pleasantry and nodding replied, "Oh, certainly you shall have a full chance." The court then adjourned. Reported Snoeting of Guiteau. It is reported that Guiteau was shot this afternoon, after leaving the court raeni, the ball taking effect in his hand. There arc several rumors in circulation one of which is that when the van in which Guiteau was riding from the court room back te the jail and had reached the vicinity of the capitol, a man riding en heiscback came up aud lircd two s.hels and then rede rapidly away in the direction of the navy yard. It is net believed that Guiteau was hit at all. ANOTHER EMRARKASMtD BANK. Suspension Unit is Cluimcdte be Only Tem porary. Bosten, Nev.18. -At 11 :10 a. ra.
