LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCES. MONDAY, NOVEMBER 14i 1881. Eancaster hxitllmnttt. MONDAY EVENING, NOV. 14, 1881. The Fontaine Engine a Failure. The wonderful Fontaine locomotive, for which great results were premised, and which was te have been given a trial of speed sliertly en the New Yerk division of the Pennsylvania railroad, bas been sud denly sent back te the shops at Paterson, N. J., where it was constructed. The engine was brought te Alteena for prelim inary work, where its peculiar construe tien of upper and lower driving wheels was carefully examined by the officers of the railroad company, and afterwards given a trial. This trial was net satisfactory te locomotive experts. They said that the damage te the tracks was greater than the com pensation in expected economy ia time. An officer of the company says that if the engine was given a straight track and one car it could undoubtedly make geed time, but if tried under the same circumstances as engines en this read are the results would be very unsatisfactory. "New, for instance," he said, ,;we take an en en irincef the kind known as 'long legged Ne. 10,' hitch en ten cars and start her oil. Away she coca, swing :ng around curves and climbing mountain sides, and giving the speed that the builder calculated in his model. 1 doubt if the Fontaine engine could make any kind of time up a mountain side with one car, and I should feel considerably alarmed in a swing around a curve behind the new machine. Yeu can rest assured that such a style of engine will never be adopted en this read, and I de net think it will be wanted in the West, for it could net run against the heavy winds they have en reads out there." Mr. Jeseph Ncal, of Pittsburgh, claims that the engine is an infringement upon a patent of his, and has instructed his agent in Philadelphia, Mr. Marcus F. Richard son, te pieeccd against the owners. Mr. Ncal says that the engine is his patent precisely with the exception of applying the power at a different angle. He built a model in 18C4 and took it te Philadel phia, where he interested in it a Mr. Rich ardson, who was te havehalf of the profits realized. It was built te propel street cars and the principle was se arranged as te increase the power and traction of the ac tuating force rather than the speed. But the patent obtained covered the right te use wheels of varied sise, se that high speed could be obtained if desired. "Unfor tunately," says Mr.Neal, "railroaders and ethers who were shown the machine failed te see its geed paints, and the building of ethers was abandoned." Jee's Leg. Net far from Fayette City, are two mining villages, named sevcrally " Pull it "and "Stretch it." Between these two places lives Jee Davis, who was se un fortunate a few months age as te have his leg amputated en account of injury re ceived in the mine. After the operation, his leg amputated, was buried en the hill side just, in front of the deer of the dwell ing, but. the spot was unknown te Jee. In course of time the rains descended and the Heeds cams and se beat en the burial spot of.T.ie'.s li-g that the box became visible te the naked eye, and attracted mere espec ially the attention of Jee. He inquired ever and ever again as he became able te hobble 'about, what was the meaning of that peculiarly shaped box tumbling down the hillside. The .,ecrct was finally let out te him. lie had it interred again en the soadside and a fence erected around the spot.. Travelers" iuquisitivc questions weaii.'d him, and he new has the inscrip tion Jee's Leg" painted en the fence. llmer:ibl Mention. " the geed old place " All right, friends, call it what you please. Wc confess te some pride in being "old" in seme respects. It was a pretty dark day, 21 years age, when we christened " Oak Nam.," and steed up te auswer te the name. 21 years is long enough for a baby te grew te manhood, and for a small undertaking te grew into a great enterprise. 21 years age we were our own buyer, bookkeeper, por ter and watchman ; and stuck te it until ethers came along te help, some of whom have been with us ever since. Te day the needed helpers are numbered by thousand?, and our custom ers aic almost beyond number and everywhere. Our store 21 years age was ''only ly large enough te turn around in. Truly wc have grewu old and "settled." We havn't any disposition te change Irem fixed prices, nor from fixed principles, the chief of which is guarding the interests of our customers. We keep te cnrplaiu old-fashioned Oak Hull buildings. They are Hke old-fashioned silver, well-worn, but still solid and geed, better than seme. newer. We held fast also te our old methods of serving our customers, viz : with the largest assortments te select from, the very best for the meuey, a guarantee with every purchase, viz : the privilege of bringing back goods and taking the money again if they want te. The only new thing about the Oak Hall premises strained and over crowded by the ever-increasing business, is the new stock for the winter of 1881. Wc sold out almost te bare beards last winter. Nearly cvery thyig is this season's cut and fashioning. New materials have been used, and new patterns te cut them by.
