Hew often liasl tlieu shared with us
The trouble el our Uvea ;
Hew oft hast thou poured balm upon
The hearts that sorrow rives ;
Hew oft from thy kind sympathy,
lluvc the crushing leads grown lighter :
Hew f!t thy cheering words of hope.
Have made the dark way brighter !
Anil new, when this great sorrow tuns
O'er thypurc life is thrown.
We usk et Ihec the privilege
Te make it part ourewn !
We ask that we may mourn witli thee,
With thine our tears commingle ;
And that the cry Hern all our hearts.
May rise te heaven single !
We beg that we with thee may feel
The chastening of the red ;
That we submissive, tee, may bow
Rcfere our loving Ged !
And may we by this sorrow knew.
We've all te Oed grown dearer ;
And since He comes socIem: te us,
We'll live te Hint the nearer !

The 31 tali Courted Meravians.
n Invitation from al'rcbbyterlau "Itlshep'
Auet, lier sttay shepherd from the Mora
vian fold turns up in the author of the
following communication te the Presbyte
rian of last -week, who seems te have a
geed deal of love for the old church yet,
notwithstanding lie presents his new loe
for the adoption of any ether kuight
Orraut Met avian who may he inclined te
a fresh field and new pasture. He can't
understand the. taste which would lead a
Moravian into the Episcopal fold, but a
Presbyterian seduction seems te him quite
natural. The Meravians will doubtless ap
preciate the kind invitations of their
friends in ether churches ; but as they all
agree in saying that, except their own, the
Moravian church is the very nicest in the
"world, the shrewd Moravian brethren may
conclude that they had better slick te a
first love that everybody else declares
they love best next te their own. Whajt
sort of wi eilicial a "Bishop" in the
Presbyterian church is we de net knew,
hut the author of this article, who signs
himself Bishop of the Bellcfleld Presby
terian church, is the Uev. William J. Hol Hel
land, seu of the Rev. Francis K. Helland,
a distinguished minister of the Moravian
church and a descendant of the 1 lorscfelds
and Bcuc.ets, Philadelphia families of
old renown, the latter being in the Mayer
jreumhclmft, which is represented in the
Moravian church in Lancaster by the
Stcinmau family.
The lecent rc-ordinatien of an old friend
and college-mate of mine as a deacon of
the Pretest :t:il episcepal church by Bishop
Stevens lias provoked net a little comment
ill many iliicctieus, and justly. I am re
minded that I, tee, was ordained a deacon
of the Moravian church, as my friend has
been. Iy the laying en of the hands of
that saintly man, Bishop David Biglcr, of
the Moravian church, I was set apart te
the mini-dry of the Irjrd Jesus Christ ou
the evening of the 12th day of May, 1S72,
in the Fourth Moravian church of Phila
delphia. My connection as a minister with
the chinch of my fathers was, however,
for reasons which 1 need net detail, of
short duration. In the erdcriugs of Ged's
previdcnce,as 1 believe, I was led te cast my
let with the brethren of the presbytery
of New Brunswick a presbytery which
numbeicd, with many ethers whose names
arc in all the churches, such men as Jehn
Maclean, the revet vd ex-president of the
college of New Jersey, and his successor,
James McCosh ; Dr. Charles Dedge, the
beloved teacher and honored theologian ;
Professer Mctiill, Professer Atwater, and
Professer Green, the chairman of the
American committee en Old Testament
Revision.
Mv ordination as a deacon in the Mera
vian church cel i let red upon me full power
te administer the sacraments, and te per
form all the duties of the Christian minis
try, except te ordain te the ministry in
the Mei avian church. It was, neverthe
less, with some feelings of misgiving that
I placed my credentials in the hands of a
ministerial fiiend and told him that it was
my wish te unite with the presbytery of
New Bitinswick. After all, I was only a
deacon, and net a presbyter, I argued.
But my apprehensions were speedily dis
pelled, ami after a courteous introduction
te the presbytery by that most courtly of
men, Dr. McGill, and a few words of
formal questioning by the committee of
examiners, I was eeidially welcomed by
the brethren te take part with them in
their deliberations.
I cannot fail te contrast the manner in
which I became a Presbyterian with the
manner in which my friend has just en
tered the ranks of the church te which he
new belongs. There was nothing in the
action of the venerable presbytery of New
Brunswick te grate harshly upon the feel
ings of one whose honest pride is that he
is the seu and the great-grandson of for
eign missionaries, and who recalls the fact
that for at least ten generations these who
have gene before him have been mere dis
tinguished for their zeal in behalf of
Christ's kingdom than their ambition te
be accounted cither great or rich, and who
nevertheless, were neither Presbyterians
nor Episcopalians. Theie was nothing
weich could, by any implication, suggest
that these whose names and memories he
cherishes might net have been in amplest
measure the participants of the Divine
grace, and in the fullest sen se members of
"the churcli el ueu. " It is a matter
of quiet satisfaction te me that the
lines fell te me in the direction of the
Presbyterian rather than the Episcopalian
fold, and I would say te my friends of the
Meravi.in ministry if any of them should be
compelled hereafter te sunder their rela
tions with that dear old church of the mar
tyrs and the confessors, that it would be
well for them te remember that there is a
denomination, great and influential, and
honorable in its traditions and its history,
which beasts among its historic names
such men as Knox and Edwards, aud
Withei spoon, aud Chalmers, and Alexan
der, and Guthrie, and Hedge, which does
net deem the ordination conferred by it as
in any dcgiec ampler than that conferred
by the church of Huss aud Cemenius,
Zinzeuderf and Zeisbergcr, and which
with Christian kindness will even receive
a deacon of the Moravian church, and re ro re
cegnize him as a presbyter or bishop, in
geed or regular standing.
I am, very respectfully yours,
The Bishop.
of the Bclleficld Presbyterian church.

That Old Stere.
' The old corner," " the old reliable." li the geed old place"
All light, friends, call it what yen please. "Vc confess te some pride
in Ileitis " old " in some respects.
It was a pretty dark day, 21 years age, when we christened " Oak
Mall," and steed up te answer te the name. 21 years is lng enough for
a baby te grew te manhood, aud for a small undertaking te grew into a
greal enterprise. 21 years age we were our own buyer, bookkeeper, pot
ter and watchman ; and stuck te it until ethers c.itue along te help, some
of whom have been with us ever since.
Te day the needed helpers are numbered by thousands, and our custom
ers arc almost beyond number and everywhere.
Our store 21 years age was "only that cubby-hole at the corner," hard
ly brge enough te turn around in. New you knew what it is.
Truly we have grown old aud "settled." Wc havn't any disposition
te chain,'!! lrem fixed prices, nor from fixed principles, the chief of which
is guarding the interests of our customers.
We keep te our plain old-fashioned Oak Hall buildings. They are like
old-fashioned silver, well-worn, but still solid and geed, better than some
newer.
We held fast also te our old methods of serving our customers, viz :
with the largest assortments te select from, the very best for the money,
a guarantee with every purchase, viz : the privilege of bringing back
goods and taking the money again if they want te.
The ' ilv new thing about the Oak Hall premises strained and over
crowded by the ever-increasing business, is the new stock for the winter
of 1881. Wc sold out almost te bare beards last winter. Nearly every
thing is this season's cut aud fashioning. New materials have been used,
and new patterns te cut thent by.
Flease accept this old-fashioned, hearty invitation te leek iu upon us
and thus find out if our old age and experience hasn't served us well in
producing this stock.
