Failure Caused by the Dishonesty or a Cashier. Newark, X. J., Oct. 31. The follow ing appeared en the doers of the Mechan ics' National bank this morning : " Closed in consequence e.f statements affecting the bank made by the cashier te the beard of directors, which are new undergoing an investigation. " The bank has been regarked as the strongest in Newark. The stock steed at ISO. AH rumors current agree that there has been a heavy defalcation, and this is gen generally charged te cashier O. 8. Bald win. It is said he told the directors that all that was left or the resources of the bank was its building ; which is worth $50,000. The firm of Nugent & Ce., Newark, has suspended. This concern was involved with the broken bank. At a meeting of the directors yesterday Cashier Baldwin said the bank was net in condition te pay, and that the liabilities were se great that further attempts te carry en business was useless. The direc tors offered te subscribe $500,000 te put the bank in condition te continue business, but the cashier responded that 2,000,000 would net de it. It was then decided te suspend at euce.
