"PATIENCE."
Wi'' - UU.BEBT AND SULLIVAN 'S NEW OPEC A.
Taklag OS ttae EngBtli Esthetes.
Philadelphia North American.
"Patience; or, Bonthrone's Bride,"
the new comic opera by Gilbert and Sulli
van, is a satire upon a peculiar phase of
contemporary English society, which has
been extensively and graphically illus
trated in these very clever drawings by
akDa-Maurier which have appeared from
'time te time in the pages of "Punch." It
is a burlesque upon the extravagances of
the ultra aesthetic medievalists, who form
a -literary and artibtie clique, in which
Oaear Wilde, Dante Gabriel Kesetti, Al
gernon S. Swinburne and Burne Jenes are
the prophets and high priests. In order te
appropriately and distinctively designate
'the followers of this new religion, it has
been found necessary te coin a new word,
and as they arc nothing if net aesthetic,
they have come te be known as aesthetes.
There is no difficulty in identifying
them, for their characteristics are well
1 defined. Their speech betrays them,
and even their personal appearance gives
them away. The typical aesthete is as
billions as Rebespierre, and as lank and
limp as bis favorite lilly. He clings and
pines and droops. Geed health and a ro
bust habit of beJy are his peculiar aver
sinn. These things arc vulgarly material
aaA common place, while he is quite tee
utterly ideal and spiritual. It is another
part of the aesthete's creed te arrange
himself in attitudes medelled after the
figures in fourteenth century illumina
tions, attitudes which are regarded as
expressive of the most sublimated senti
nents and the most etherially artistic
emotions. Fer he is excessively emotional,
se much se that he has been compelled te
devise a vocabulary of his own for the ad
equate expression of his thoughts and
feelings. He says that se and se is quite
tee distinctly precious, and that mmuc-
thineelse is purely earnest or soulful ly
intense or wholly tee utterly too-toe. He
has an ecstatic admiration for mediaeval art
and is impressed with a soulfully intense
conviction that modern life is se hopeless
ly common place that the rapturous mel
ancholy which is te be evolved from a
contemplation of the unattainable is the
solitary comfort of the conscientious ideal
ist. This is the person whose ways have
furnished Mr. Gilbert with a subject which
calls forth his keenest wit and sharpest
satire, and which has been te Mr. Sulli
van the inspiration for some of his most
charming music. Ne mere outline of its
story or narration of its incidents can ad
equately suggest the clevernesses and
effectiveness of Mr. Gilbert's libretto. Its
strength lies in its dialogue, which is
wonderfully droll and telling, uiore se
than in either of the two similar pieces by
the same author. There is a uaive sim
plicity in the words of " Pinafere "
which renders the humor of that opera
mere readily apparent, and therefore mere
immediately appreciable, but the libretto
of "Patience" is the most entcrtainiug
of the two, while it is incomparably
superior te that of the "Pirates of Pen
zance." As usual with Gilbert's pieces,
the actual story which forms the basis for
the superstructure of dialogue and situa
tion is short and simple. When the cur
tain rises, a band of aesthetic maidens arc
discovered reclining upon the stage iu a
variety of the aforesaid mediaeval attitudes
expressive of listless languor and de
spairing ideality. It appeirs from the
chorus with which the proceedings are be
gun that these picturesque maidens aie all
hopelessly in lore, and it subsequently
transpires that the object of their unan
imous affection is a person whom
the leader of the band characterizes as
" Our Reginald."' Reginald, however, is
obdurate te their devotion. He prefers
Patience, the village milk-maid, whose
heart is less impressible than the feelings j
of the aesthetic, or rather whose taste i
different. After the subject of love has
been briefly discussed, the limp yeuug
ladies in the classically-clinging draperies
adjourn te lift up their voices in morning
carol te their Reginald, and a company of
heavy dragoons, in buff and scarlet regi
mentals, files upon the stage. After a
chorus and a patter song by the colonel
" our Reginald " appears. He is glad is
dirty sage green, and is followed by the
aesthetic maidens, who arc singing about
hopeless love and " miseries," while they
accompany themselves upon the mandolin,
cymbal, pipe, dulcimer, psaltery, and all
manner of aesthetic instruments. Though
old acquaintances, they take no netice of
the dragoons, whose indignation and sur
prise at such unusual treatment impels
them te exclaim :
New is net tuts ridiculous ! and id nut this
preposterous !
A thoreugh-iiaced nbsiirilitv ! Explain it it
you can !
Instead of rushing eagerly te cherish us and
fester us.
They all prefer this melancholy literary
man.
Instead of slyly peering at us,
Castiug loekii endearing at us.
Blushing at us, Hushing at us, flirting with :t
fau,
They're actually sneering at us, fleering at
tu, Jeering at us.
Pretty sort el treatment for a military man !
But this impassieucd expostulation pre
duced no effect. The maidens continue
their adoration of Biiuthorne, who further
enthralls them by reciting a poem, fresh
from his gigantic brain, which is described
uy it admirers as " purely fragrant " aud
"earnestly precious." One of the officers
says it seems te be nonsense, but is silenced
by the rejoinder that it is such " precious
nonsense." The military meu then
make a .last appeal te the rapturous
maidens in the name of common sense, but
they are haughtily repulsed. "It can
never be, " says the Lady Saphir. " Yeu
arc net Empyrean. Yeu arc net Delia
Crusean. Yeu" are net cveu Early Eng
lish. " As she reviews their miserable
state her heart softens, aud she ends by
imploring them te be "Early English, ere
it is tee late. " Then the maidens aud
the dragoons exeunt severally, and Buu Buu
therne is left alone. He has just informed
the audience that he is an aesthetic sham ;
that he "does net care for dirty greens, by
any means, " when Patience enters, and
by way of advancing his suit he takes her
also into his confidence. She says she
don't like poetry, and in a burst
of reckless fiankness he avows that
it is the same way with him. He
doesn't like poetry, aud, warming as He
proceeds, he explains that he is net as bil bil
lieusas he seems, and that there is mete
innocent fun in him than a casual ob
server might imagine. But it is all of no
use. Patience remains cold, and Biiu
thorne withdraws in despair. He has
gene when Angela appears. She accom
plishes the conversion of Patience, who
makes up her mind te fall in love without
delay. At this juncture Gresvener, an
idyllic poet, enters upon the scene. He is
the perfection of manly beauty, and it is
net long before the aesthetic maidens have
deserted their old love for the newcomer.
In the second act the military officers have
put away their uniforms and adopted
scsthctic costumes and manners, by way of
showing their devotion te the poetic dam
sels upon whom their hearts are set. Pa
tience in the meanwhile is in love with
Buntherne, upon the principle that love
must be unselfish. She has rejected Gror Grer Gror
veuer because he is tee easy te love, but
when at the last Buntherne announces his
reform, and Gresvener lays aside the cos
tume which made him se supremely beau
tiful, and is transformed into an ordinary
young man, the tables are turned, and it
is with Gresvener and net Bunthrone that
.'Patience makes a match. The aesthctic
maidens arc also converted te common
place ways, and the curtain, fa!k upon a
scene of the most satisfactory description.
The music with which Mr. Sullivan has
illustrated the theme is altogether charm
ing, and is decidedly superior te bis
previous achievements in the same
vein of composition. Mr. Sullivan is
something of an aesthete himself by
virture of such songs as "Sweet and
Fair" and "Leeking Back," and be has
treated the esthetes with marked respect.
There is none of the spirit of burlesque in
the music which they are given. It is sen
timental, of course, but it is deliciously
melodious. The opening chorus, with a
refrain which runs through the opera;
Jane's ballad, "Silvered is the Raven
Hair," and Gresvener's song of the "Mag
net," are as delightfully tuneful and ten
der as anything Sullivan has written, and
in the sextette at the close of the first act
he rises with complete success te a very
high standard of musical composition. The
airs and choruses which are sung by the
dragoons are remarkably spirited and vig
orous, aud their effectiveness is increased
by the contrast between their breezy em
phasis and the subtle modulations of the
aesthetic music.

UNDERWEAR.
Twe extremes et the French hand-made
underwear, lately come te us, attract notice.
Seme of it is se plain that it seems scarcely te
belong te the class of embroidered work It
reminds ene rather of the hand-work we used
te make families here twenty-five years age.
The ether extreme is the richest et embroidery.
It needs te be seen. Nobedy'll believe from
description the work that is in it; the fine
ness, the richness, the extravagance. We
show it with pleasure.
At the same time see what the sewing ma
chine has done for us, iu our American fac
tory made underwear. Each has a perfection
et its own. Factory-work, made a we get it,
is a new grade et sewing.
