He paid his fine and costs te Chief Bur
gess Sncath.
A horse attached te King's bakery

At a special meeting of the school beard
last evening, the only business of import
ance transacted was the granting of leave
of absence te Misses Skeen, Newlen,
lliukle, Uogeutegler, Lcman and Straw
bridge, teachers iu the public schools and
classmates of Miss Emma Kcssler, who
died last Sunday, iu order that they might
attend the funeral this afternoon, and
that their schools be closed. It was also
decided te insure the new Fifth street
school building and furniture in the sum
of $3,000.
A little ever two years age a man by
the name of Gresse committed a rape in
Yerk county. Detectives were at once
put upon bis track but were unsuccessful
in capturing him. Yesterday a policeman
from Yerk caine te Columbia and asked
for a first clans detective. Samuel Camp
bell, formerly a policeman in the borough,
and who new keeps a livery stable, sent
for Special Officer Redenhauser. A de
scription of Gresse was given, and hiring
a team ami taking the necessary
papers along, Redenhauser set out. He
knew of a mau ausweriug te the discrip discrip
tien, living at or near Chestnut hill. lie
proceeded thither, found the man, who
upon hearing the warrant read, attempted
the escape. Fer nearly half an hour
Redenhauser chased him and finally caught
him, by getting near enough te knock
him down with his list. The handcuffs
were put en him and he was brought te
Columbia, placed in the hands of the Yerk
policeman and taken te Yeik. This is a
big feather in Henry's cap. Grosse is a
desperate villain, and one whose name
alone caiucs terror in the breasts of the
Yerk police.
COUKT PROCEEDINGS.
Before Judge Patterson.
The case of Geerge Sheffvs. Themas
Baumgardner, summon in ejectment, was
called yesterday morning te be tried be
fore Judge Livingston, but it was found
that the plaintiff was without counsel;
the attorney whom he had, having with

the court that he Treuld net be

Sheff stated that he would suffer a non nen

The plaiutiffs suffered a non-suit in the

plain that they have been damaged by the
raising of the defendant's mill dam, se
that the water floods their land and inter
feres somewhat with the running of their
mill. The plaintiff's mill is en the Pequea

where Watsen's run empties. Defendant's
mill is ou the same stream about three

AT FREDERICK.
The Washington Ueys Enjoying Themselves.
The Washington fire company and
Clemens's band arrived in Frederick at
G:25 p. m. yesterday after an uneventful
and pleasant ride. The read passes through
a beautiful and highly improved country,
net unlike our own county, and the boys
carefully noted the .objects of interest ou
the way, and inspected the leading sta
tions. Arriving at Frederick they were
met by the United company and escorted
te the latter's house, through crowds of
cheering spectators and while the bells of
the city were rang. At the engine
house Vice President F. J. Nelsen, a
leading lawyer, formally welcomed the
Lancaster visitors, and Mayer Mebcrly
extended the freedom of the city. W. U.
Hensel fitly responded for the Washington.
They were then marched te the Carlin
house, where they are comfortably quar
tered. It is a well managed aud centrally
located hotel, ruu under the same direc
tion as the City hotel, the leading hestclrie
of the place.
The parade comes off this afternoon
and among the companies iu line is the
Sarah Jane, a crack company from Win
chester, Va. Clemmens's band was busy
te-day, serenading prominent people and
places. Araeug the features of the visita
tion are the presentation te the United of
the beautiful finished horns from Dana
Graham's comb factory, and te Mayer
Moberly of a geed photograph of Clemmens,
Norbeck and Chambers of the band,
Moberly is an old band leader, a first rate
fellow, and our band men knew him well
and learned te like him when they were
stationed in Frederick id the early days of
the war.
A special dispatch received by the In
telligences this afternoon states that
the Washington company were out sere
nading the newspaper offices and the fire
companies this morning ; that the weather
is delightful, and that all hands are having
an enjoyable time". The parade was a
very successful affair. The company will
return te-morrow via Yerk, stepping off
there duringthe afternoon as the guests of
the Union.
Railroad Policeman.
Washington Pyle, late constable of the
Eighth wardj and subsequently en the
city police force as a special, has been ap
pointed te a position en the Pennsylvania
railroad police force, and entered upon
his duties yesterday. He is an active,
efficient and courageous officer, and the
train jumpers had better give him a wide
berth.
This aftcrnoeu Officer Pyle made his
first arrest. Twe or three men attempted
te beard a train in the depot and he took
them off. One of them, it seems, had a
cattle car pass, aud one of the ethers
named Jehn Bryson interfered with the
officer while ia the dischargo.ef his duty,
whereupon Pyle arrested him and locked
him up.
TRAMPS AKKESTEO.
anppesed Theft of Postage Stamps.
This morning Geerge Thompson, who
was committed te the county prison for
drunken and disorderly conduct, "gave
away" a gang of his fellow-bummers,
who were said te have about $60 worth of
stolen U. S. postage stamps, which they
offered te sell for $15. This part of the
story was seen confirmed, as the police
seen learned that some of the tramps bad
been te the drug store of Mr. Greff, corner
of Middle and East King streets, and
offered te sell the stamps for $15. Mr. Greff
of course refused te purchase. The
police at once went in pursuit of the party
and succeeded in capturing James Mack,
Themas Morgan and Wm. Clark, but none
of the postage stamps were found upon
them. They had considerable sums of
money, however, and were armed with
rather formidable looking knives. They
were locked up for a hearing.
A Yeuug Laey Terribly Burned.
Last evening at Cbambersburg Mary
Eyster, while holding a student's lamp,
was frightfully burned. Her clothing
caught fire, she screamed and ran into
the yard, where a brisk breeze fanned
the flames. Her mother wrapped a shawl
about her and had her hands
burned te the bone. Her sister and
brother attempted te wrap her iu a carpet
and were burned. She tore the carpet off,
and the fire was only quenched when two
gentlemen, by main force, held the carpet
about her. She is new conscious, but su fl'er
ing terribly, and it is net expected that
she can recover.
A Leng Run.
Last evening Jehn Heed, colored, came
dashing into the Pennsylvania railroad
depot at a tremendous rate of speed, out
of breath and dripping perspiration.
" Whar's de 'peiter, whar's de 'porter !''
were the first words he uttered. He
wauted te tell the 'porter, or reporter as
some folks name him, that he leftRohrerc leftRehrerc leftRohrerc
tewn at 0:35 afoot and reached the Lan
caster depot at 0:52, making the trip in 17
minutes ! The distance is about three
miles and the run was made te win a $5
bet.
Teacher Elected.
This merniug the night school commit
tee of the school heard elected Mr. R. S.
Gates as an additional teacher in the Duke
street night school for boys. The teach
ing force new consists of Messrs. Lever-
geed, Gable and Gates. There were 80
pupils present last cvenincr, and the school
is getting along finely. There is room yet
for a geed many mere boys, and there are
a geed many mere boys who ought te at
tend the school.

DESIRABLE REAL ESTATE.
Building Lets and Bouses.
The attention of persons seeking te
make profitable investments, of builders in
search of eligible locations, of mechanics
or small capitalists desiring te purchase
cheap homes, is specially directed te the
properties te be offered for sale at the
Leepard Hetel, en Thursday evening, Oc
tober 27, at 7i o'clock. They consist of
1. A vacant let, most eligibly situated
at the northwest corner of East Orange and
Marshall streets, and running back te Mari Mari
on, with 130 feet front en East Orange and
245 feet en Marshall. The situation is
such as te afford four geed building fronts
en Orange street with full depth ; two full
lots.frenting en Orange street with ample
room for six smaller houses en Marien ; or
for four lets fronting en Orange street of
32 feet each and of a depth of 100 feet and
four fronts of 21 feet each en Marshall
with a depth of 130 feet.
2. An improved let, 80 feet front aud 150
feet in depth, ou the southwest comer of
Orange and Marshall streets, with two two
story brick houses and a side let of 42 feet

ry, apple and pear trees.
The houses arc comfortable homes and
eligible for renting ; the side let has suffi
cient front for two mere houses.
These properties are situated in a rapidly
improving part of the city ; new streets
are being opened in their immediate neigh
borhood, and their proximity te extensive

bargains in real estate.
