holding a missionary meeting. With the
exception of a short discussion en the
rules of order this report consumed the
remainder of the morning session. At 12
o'clock the synod adjourned te meet at 2

The Presbyterian synod of Philadelphia
commenced its ninety-third session last
evening in the First Presbyterian church,
en Franklin street, Wilkesbarre. There
was a large attendance of ministers, luling
elders and residents of Wilkcsbarrc Rev.
Wallace Radclilfe, of Reading, the retir
ing moderator, presided and preached the
opening sermon, his text being St. Jehn,
5th chapter, 2 i verse. Rev. Willard II.
Rice, D. D., of Philadelphia, stated clerk,
and Rev. James Roberts, of Ceatcsville,
permanent clerk, weic piesent and occu
pied seats en the platform.
Within the bounds of the synod aie

Death ! -Mesliacli Keckuhcld.
Mcshach Reckaficld died rather sud
denly of apoplexy last evening at his
residence en Strawbeiry slieet near Seuth
Queen, aged about 80 years. Mr. Rocka Recka
ficld is best known te our citizens as the
watchman and messenger S the Lancaster
County bank, a position he filled for very
many ycais with the utmost fidelity and
courtesy te the bank and its patrons.
About a year age he was compelled te re
linquish the position en account el ad
vanced age and physical inliimity. He
had been quite ill for about ten days, but
last evening lie felt well enough te take a
sheitwalk and visit one of his neighbors.
Very seen after his return home he was
stricken down with apoplexy and died seen
after waids.

Mrs. Anna Hrciicnitin, relict of the late
Dr. Abraham Ilieneman, died at the isi isi
dence of her son-in law, Fiank ('aider, en
Lancaster avenue, this morning at 5
o'clock. She was a daughter of the late
Henry M. Reigart and a sifter of Mr. Jehn
11. Rcigait, whose funeral took place this
morning. She leaves a family, consisting
of II. R. Brcncinau, .Jehn lirciicman, Mrs"
Frank Caldcr and Prof. Abraham Hicnt'
man. Mrs. Iticucnian was a life-long mem
ber of St. James Episcopal church and
was an excellent Christian woman.

J. Harry llaitmau, son of Dr. S. 1J.
Ilartman, died at his father's residence en
Xeith lVmcc street, after a brief illness
from typhoid fever. lie was a well-known
and highly popular young gentleman, a
member of the senior class of Fjanklin and
Mai shall college, a line musician and an
admirer as well of athletic! speit;, an
efficii- el the Lancaster bicycle club and a
skillful rider. Hn was a delegate from
the local chapter of the Chi Phi fraternity
te the national convention of the order
seen te assemble in lSaltiinetr, and was
stricken with his fatal illne::? when en
gaged in preparation for the jeuincy. lie
was aged about eighteen years and his
death i.; a seuicc of poignant grief en the
part of his parents and ether relatives, and
of sineere mourning throughout a large
circle effiieiidsand acquaintances.

in the sign l.inguage by Re. Henri' W.
Syle. The bride and gioeni arc a fine
looking couple, were handsomely attired
and made the neces-sary responses with
dignity and grace. Prof. C.ul Mat, pre
sided at the ergau and cxe -u t tl the wedding
march in his usual hi iliiant style. Theio
were quite a large number of mutes
among the .spectateis.

The cuiimittee appointed by city coun
cils te propose plana ler the reorganization
of the Lancaster lire department held a
meeting last evening. The committee has
had some correspondence with builders
of steam engines, and the secretary of the
committee was iustiuclcd te correspond
with ether builders, and also te cones
pond with the different iiie companies of
this r.itv relatie te the lease or sale of
their apparatus and fire houses. The
committee will be icady te report at nest
meeting of councils an ordinance for the
government of tb.2 newly organized fi e

Comic Opera.
Frank Arthur, representing Chas. E.
Ferd's Omic opera company, is in Lan
caster te day, arranging for the appear
ance hcic next Wednesday evening, 26th
inst., of that celebrated cempauy, in the
new opera of " La Mascettc" by Audran,
author of Olivetti, one of the mett
popular of recent operatic productions.
The cempauy includes Miss Madeline Lu
cettc, an English faveiitc, and our vetm?
friend Amweg, of Hazlctinc notoriety, is
in the cast. The sale of scats begins at

The funeral of the late Jehn II. Rcigait
took place this morning from his resi
dence. East King street, the attendance
bcinc very large. The funeral service of
the Lutheran church was read by Rev. Dr.
Grccnwald, of Tiinity church, after which
the funeral sermon was preached by Rev.
Fry, the assistant pastor of Tiinity. Rev.
Houpt followed with a piaycr. The inter
ment was made at Woodward Hill ceme
tery.

A thief broke into the kitchen of Henry
Yeung, who lives en the corner of Seuth
Queen and Vine streets, last night, and
stele a hat aud coat belonging te Mr.
Yeung. They effected an entrance through
a shutter.
Elbow Dislocated. '
Last night Heward Oriel, seu of Jacob
Griel. of North Lime street,, dislocated
his left elbow joint while playing butcher.
The dislocated member was put in shape
again by t)r. Levergood.

A meeting of the high school alumni
will be held this afternoon at 4 o'clock.

Abe White, colored, died yesterday,
after an illness of about a year.
Mr. T. S. White, the timsmitb, yester
day fell off the reef of the German Catho
lic church. A rope ea the ladder en which
he was working parted and threw him
down. He fell en a grap.e arbor, which
probable saved his life.
Town very dull.
Fish items.
Ycsterdav was a biz day at File's Eddy.
About 50 fisheimen, most of hem from
this city, were there hooking bass. Near
ly all of them had excellent luck, and
they brought plenty home.
Clark Bestick, proprietor of the hotel at
the " Eddy" has presented Judge Liv
ingston with an entire new fishing outfit,
consisting of a pole, reel, lines, &c.
Heme Again.
The beaid of prison inspectors returned
from their trip last night. After leaving
Philadelphia they went te Baltimore where
they visited the Maryland state peniten
tiary. They then went te Washington and
were shown thieugh the piisen by the
marshal of the district. They saw Guiteau
the murdeier of President Garfield.
The New Train.
TJ.e caily train between Philadelphia
and this city, will be put en as seen as the
change in the schedule can be arranged,
which will be about November 5th.
It will arrive here shortly after 6 o'clock.

General Silas M. Bailey, Republican
candidate for state treasurer, arrived here
at 2:30 this afternoon. He left for Mt.

met the gencial.

Last night but one ledger was in the
lockup, he was a little man who imagines
that he is a doctor. He has been in the
station house several times, and this morn
ing he get 30 days.

Arthur' New Cabinet Net Yet Selected.
President Arthur is said te have stated
this moraine that he would net send in
the cabinet nominations te-day. and that
he had net contemplated se doing; that he
wished the Senate in taking the Yorktown
recess te adjourn ever until Saturday
or Monday, as he knew he would
net have any business of importance te
communicate before that time, but that
his request had been misunderstood.

called te order by President Davis at neon.
Mr. Sherman called up his resolution ask

Citicage, Oct. 21. The destruction
along the Shy Lcvce is most complete.
The break is new fully three hundred feet
wide and constantly getting wider. An
immense volume of water is pouring
through and the water is approaching
Itockpert, four miles from the river. Peo
ple are hastily leaving houses and every
read is blocked with teams. Farmer." ,many
of whom had hundreds of acres of fine
winter wheat last week are camped along
the bluffs with their families. The river
near Hannibal is fully nine miles wide.
Railroad Obstructed Train 'Wrecked.
Chamhersbcrg, Pa., Oct. 21. A con
struction train en the Baltimore & Cum
berland Valley railroad was thiewn from
the track six miles north of this place last
night by means of pieces of tim
ber wedged in the cattle guards.
Conductor Charles Shcckels, of Bal
timore, had his skull crushed and
one leg broken, and sustained ether
injuries, but is still living. There is no
clue te the perpetrators of the outrage.

Philadelphia, Oct. 21. Suit was en
tered in the court of coinnien pleas te day
by Patrick and Rosanna Brady, parents of
Annie S. Brady, who was killed by jump
ing from the window of the Rai.delph

claimed. The defendants arc charles II.
Laudenberger, the operator, and Jeseph
Harvey, the owner of the mill.

A Jersey Libel Case.
Newton, N. J., Oct. 21. In the Sus
sex Independent libel cases, in which the
editors en Wednesday pleaded guilty, W.
II. Gibbs, the eldest editor, was sentenced
te ten mouths, with hard labor, in the
slate prison and te pay 8200 fine. J. J.
Stanten, the ether editor, te six months
and the same fine. The sentences aic con
sidered very severe.
