THURSDAY EVENING, OCT. 20, 1881.
A RAND "GBABSIIuraSB."
A Pennsylvania Locomotive That la te Make
Ninety Miles an flour Between Phil-
adelphla and New Yerk.
Standing in a " stall" in the leund
house of the Pennsylvania railroad, in
Jersey City, is an odd-looking locomotive
bearing the name "Fontaine." The en
gine was constructed for speed, and, al
though it has net yet made its trial trip, it
is expected that it will run at the rate of
ninety miles an hour. The machinery, in
stead of being below the medium line of
the boiler, is almost entirely above it.
There are three paiis of driving-wheels,
but only two rest en the rai!s. The third
pair are en top of the boiler directly in
front of the cab. Thcse wheels are termed
the ''main drivers,'' and the power is com
municated te them from the cylinders. The
steam chests and cylinders are set at an
angle of about 45 degrees, and the sides of
the boiler, and the crank reds ruu up te
the " drivers." The lower driving-wheels
are different sized and are net connected.
The rear-wheels, which are only feet in
diameter, in the nomenclature of railroad
men are the " ponies." The forward pair
are called the " lower drivers," and arc
double. The main part of each wheel is
G feet in diameter. The ether part, which
is a separate wheel, inasmuch as it docs
net come in contact with the rail, al
though in the solid casting, is known ah
the " friction wheel." Itis4Jfcet in di
ameter, and is supplied with a steel tire
the same as the ethers. The ' ' main dri
vers" stand upon the "friction wheels,"
and transmit the metiv power te them.
The large wheels 1 oiling upon the
smaller ones give the speed. There
is no gearing whatever. The "main
drivers" ruu in ene direction, and
turn the " friction wheels " and "lower
drivers" in another. In order te prevent
the wheels from supping, aud thus losing
motion, steam pressure is applied te the
main drivers te held them down upon the
wheels beneath. The force can be increased
from the simple weight of the wheels te 1G
tens at the will of the engineer, who is
governed by the length of the train the
locomotive may be drawing, I be diameter
efthe truck-wheels under the front end
of the engine is 40 inches. The usual faizc
is 33 inches. Otherwise the "Fontaine"
does net differ materially from
the ordinary locomotive. The whole
affair weighs 38 tens. Sonic engines
weigh 50 tens. The cylinders are 17 by
24 inches in dimensions, ihe amount el
steam carried when ruunlngisKSO pounds.
The passenger engines en most rnilrcad-s
carry 140 pounds. The only stuking Tea
ture of the " Fontaine" te the eye is the
general appearance. The presence of the
extra pair et wliccls en top el the boiler
has wen for it the names "camels"
and " grasshopper." While the en
gine leeks strange in comparison
with ethers it docs net appear ill-pre
portioned. It is gay in p.iint aud em
bellishments, and the smooth brass and
iron parts arc brightly polished. The en
gine was invented by Eugcno-Fentaiiic, a
b renchmau, formerly a locomotive engineer
whose home is in Detroit, Mich. It is the
second ene built, and was completed about
a month age. It was constructed at the
Grant locomotive works in Paterson. The
first engine is new tunning en the Canada
Southern railroad. In May I.i6t it drew
two coaches from Amhcr&tburg te SI.
Themas, adistancc of 111 miles, iuOS min
utes. The entire ruu from Amherstburg
te Buffalo, 235 miles, was made in L'35
minutes, including step for coal aud water.
"While a reporter of the Times was in
specting the engine in the round house in
Jersey City yesterday afternoon a well
dressed, pleasant faced mau who steed a
short distance away smoking, was pointed
out as the engineer. The reporter learned
that his name was Lorenze II. Clapp, aud
that he was formerly an engineer en the
Canada Southern, lie said he would be
glad te explain the peculiarities aud mer
its of the engine, and told the reporter
hew the machinery was constructed
aud hew it operated
"It ran like a bird aud rode like a par
lor car," said engineer Clapp with enthu
siasm, "lvaut te tell yen," he added,
" that I can go faster en Ne. 2 than any
man in the world."
" Isu't the danger increased by running
fast?"
"I don't think it is. The engine hugs
the rail, and is as steady as a clock. "
The reporter learned from Mr. Fontaine
that the trial trip would be made in a very
few days. Ne 2, if the expectations of the
inventor arc realized, will run between
Jersey City and Philadelphia. The use of
the engine for a year or se will be given te
the railroad company. The cost of the
Fontaine engines will net be much meie
than that of the common stvle.
