At half-past nine o'clock last night Pro Pro
feseor .lames Mi'CImteck, the well known
Miigcen, died at his. residence, Ne. 1001
Vine stieet, Philadelphia. The deceased
was beni iu Lam: ister county, in 1809, two
yeais after the anival of his parents from
Ireland. He bgan the .study of medicine
when he was fourteen, and graduated
from J eflersen college in 1S29, when but
twenty 3 cars of age. In 18-51 he was ap
pointed one of the vaccine physicians of
the city, and iu the following year lec
tuicd onebsleliios te a .summer class in
the college. Dining the fearful epidemic
of the same e.ir he served in the Cheny
stieet elieleia hospital. In 1S'9 he opened
the Philadelphia Scheel of Anatomy, which
seen hccium the largest private class ever
assembled in that city. Fit 1811 he took
the fliair of anatomy and physiology in
the Yeiineut Auademv f Medicine, ar.d
hews he icmaiued until 1S.TJ, when he re
signed. Four years Liter he v. as chosen
chief lcsident physician of the Philadelphia-
hospital ai.d almshouse. In 18G1 he
was elected city trra-aner as a War Dem
ecrat, aud conducted th.' eilire two years
with such scrupulous care, that as a com
pliment council." icle iscd his bondsmen a
year after his retiicmcnt. The immediate
eause of his death was apoplexy, with
which Dr. McClintock was stiickeu three
weeks age. His skill in his profession
was only equalled by his rait! and atten
tion te the peer.

Ne. 41.1 Wet King stieet, aged 79 'years.
He was fenncily extensively engaged, in
the distilling business, and was many
years age a member of city councils.
His funeral will take place en Salutdav at
2:30 p. m.

Accident.
Yesterday afternoon as the American
hose caniage was coming down lZ,t King
.street at a high rate of speed, a heisc
standing iu front of Knapp's brewery leek
flight and ran in front of the hose carriage
causing the men at the tongue te sweivc
te one side and inn the carriage against a
hitching pest in front of Eugene Iiaucr's
saloon. Sonic of the gcaiing of the hose
carriage was damaged, but no one was
hint.

Trains Laie.
Nearly all the fast trains en tlu Penn
sylvania railroad have been late te-day.

at 7:17 and the second at 8:00. Pacific ex
press this afternoon was 20 minutes late.
A Very Large Garnet.
J. G. Meriiam, residing 1C2 East King
street, shown us a specimen of pure garnet
about the size of a hulled walnut taken
fiem a block of granite from the Munson
quarry iu Massachusetts. It was sent te
Mr. Merriam by hi son-in-law, who re
sides at Munson.
Chestnuts Scarce. "
The crop of chestnuts is quite small this
year. They are scarce en market and are
selling at high figures.
Dead.
It will be remembered that a few weeks
age a paragraph appeared in this paper
stating that Mayer MacGeniglc had re
ceived a despatch from Denver, in which
it was stated that Jehn Spickler
was very hick, and that his parents
who lived in this city, should be notified
of his illness. The mayor was unable te
learn anything about the family, but it
new appears the name was wrongly given.
It is Jehn Spikcr, net Spickler, and his
father lives en Rockland ttreet. A letter
leceived a day or two age from Denver
announces the death of the young man,
who went West several ye ars age.
Accident.
Geeige Riley, a workman employed iu
Russet's sawing and bendintr mill, Seuth
Queen street, below Vine, met with a
rather sci ions accident this morning. While
at weik sawing out fellees a piece of the
weed was caught by the circular saw and
hurled back with great force, striking Mr.
Riley in the abdomen, and tendering him
helpless. He was taken in a coach te his
home, Ne. 212 Neith Prince street, aud
medical aid summoned. His injuries arc
net censideied fatal.

lin, orSenicrville, Ma;s., is se remarkable that

Memerial Exercises In Bosten Te clay.
Bosten, Oct. 20. The memorial exer
cises in honor of the late President Gar
field, under the auspices of the city of
Bosten, were held te-day iu Tremont
Temple, which was elaborately decorated.
The platform was occupied by Mayer
Prince and ether prominent men, and the
audience, which filled the hall, was a most
intelligent one.
Mayer Prince, presiding, made a short
address,and Palestrina's requiem mass was
rendered by the Boylston club. Rev. Dr.
Lathrop offered prayer, and another mus
ical selection preceded the oration deliv
ered bv General N. P. Banks.
Five Men Killed.
Cincinnati, Oct. 20. Five men were
killed jesterday en the Cincinnati South
ern railroad, at MeKinncy station, 130
miles from this city, while tiding an a car
containing water tauks. The engine,
which had been detached, became un
manageable and was driven with
great force against the car. The
men killed were David Campbell, Gee.
Campbell, Jehn Alcorn, Charles Knobs
and Gee. Whippey. Anether empleye.
Thes. Smith, had both legs broken and
Dec Lane was badly hurt.
Mail KeDbcrs In Texaft.
Galveston, Texas, Oct. 20. A Hen
rietta special says : On Tuesday night at
six o'clock the mail coach from Galcs
ville was stepped east of Belknap,
twenty miles cast of here, and the
driver was compelled .te cut open
the mail sacks, when the regis
tered packages were abstracted and the
coach allowed te proceed. This is the
fourth time the mail coach has been
stepped by robbers en this route in two
months.
The Vitriol Thrower Acquitted.
Philadelphia, Oct. 20. The trial of
Gcoige Weed, charged with throwing
vitriol into the face of Geerge Sheppard,
by which the latter was terribly burned
and suffered the total less of one eye, was
concluded this morning by the jury ren
dering a verdict of net guilty, en the
ground of the insanity of the defendant at
the time of commission of the act.
A Maiked Meb.
Chicaoe, Oct. 20. A dispatch from
Helena. Arkansas, says three negrees
charged with the murder of a overseer
named McGrath were captuicd, by a
masked mob and James Cunningham, one
of the supposed culprits, was shot and
left for dead. He turned up alive next
day, denying his guilt and implicating
white men in the murder. The posse is in
pursuit of the mob.
.Suspected Suicide or u Clergyman.
New Yerk, Oct. 20. Rev Abijah
Keen, a Presbyterian clergyman, 75 years
of aire, of Highland Falls, Orange coun
ty, Xew Yerk, was found dead in his
bed in the Hamilton hotel this morning.
The gas had net been turned off in his
room, although the flame had been ex
tinguished. Suspicions arc entertained
that he committed suicide.
