MONDAY, OCTOBER 17, 1881. Lancaster fntelliaencir. MONDAY EVENING, OCT. 17, 1881. A 1'eliUcal Dad. State Senater Klddleberger and Cengreuaian Wise, of Virginia Kxchane Shet and Sbtlce Hands After Four Bounds. A duel occurred Saturday afternoon between State Senater II. II. Riddleberger and Congressman Gcergn D. Wise, about ten miles north of Richmond. The origin of the difficulty is attributable te the Blair letters, -which have become such an important issue in the heated political can vass new going en in Virginia. Congress man Wise was the first te introduce these epistles in the canvass, te show that their alleged author, Blair, wheistheReadjuster candidate for attorney general, was treach erous te both the Democratic and Readjustcr Republican parties. Blair promptly denied their genuincss. Tiuse denials were backed up by articles writtcd aud published by his political friends and sympathizers. On the ether hand, Demo crats living in Blair's section of the state, who arc familiar with his writing, pub lished ceitificatcs asserting their belief in their authenticity. Thcse contradictory statements were bandied about by the papers of both parties and produced a great deal of bitterness between many of the leaders en both sides. A few days age the Whig, the organ of Mahone and his party, published au article transmitted te them by Riddlcbcrger, styled a confes sion from W. Leigh "Wilsen, who furnished the letters te Wise and te whom they were alleged te have been addressed. In this se-called confession Wilsen said that Wise made use of the letters knowing them te be forged. In his netv te the Whig, sending the confession, Riddlcbcrger declared that he assumed no responsi bility for any of the statements of Wilsen. Congressman Wise, however, looked upon the matter in a different light, and held him personally responsible for Wilsen's communication. He published a card in the Etuiiiig State denouncing " II. II. Riddlcbcrger, who concocted thcse slau ders, and the person or persons who di rected or sanctioned their publication, as base liars and slanderers." Mr. Riddle berger happened te be in the city and saw the offensive article and promptly chal lenged Wise and also Mr. Richard F. Beirne, one of the editors of the State. The latter gentleman had en the same afternoon, in an earlier edition, published an editorial declaring in most emphatic terms that Iliddlcbergcr was a man wholly unweithr of belief. It is thought that Editor Lieirnc was challenged first. Beth of the gentlemen promptly ac cepted the invitation te mortal combat, aud arrangements were at once entered into between Wise and Riddlcbcrger te meet. When they did se it was discov ered that, though pistols were at hand, none of the patty had brought any caps. This ncrcssitcd a change of pregramme in their movements and a later hour was fixed upon for a meeting. In the meantime Wise and Iliddlcbergcr met near Atleas Station, en the Chesapeake fc Ohie rail road. Ten paces were stepped oil and the men took portions. Bad luck seemed te attend the affair. At the first 13 iv Wi-c'.i pistol failed te explode the i p Anether efleit was made. This time Wise's shot grazed Ridolcbcrg Ridelcbcrg er's long tail coat. Anether fire was de termined upon by the duelists and the men again assumed a hostile attitude. The third shot was made with no better suc cess. After the last fiic Riddlebcrgcr, with a smile upon his face, advanced tetvatils Wise and extended his hand. A sheit parley was had between the seconds, after which Wise met his antagonist and took his hand. Riddlebcrgcr expiessc-d much rcgict at the publication at which Wise had taken offense anil icmarkcd that he had never doubted Wise's honor and integrity. After this resolution the pari ies left the field of honor. Bcinie was but a sheii. distance off and ready te ivc Riddlebcrgcr satisfaction after the matter between that gentleman and Wise was disposed of. City Police Justice Richaidsen had get -wind of the affair, however, and get effin haste te in tercept it and arrest the parties 2fet having jurisdiction in the county he lest sometime in getting a warrant from the county magistrate. He secured that decu incut and icturncd justatthctjmc that the last shot had been fired aud lcconciliatien had taken place. He at once directed his attention te Mr. Biernc aud found him en the railroad and arrested him. He was put under a $1,000 bend. Mr. Ryan, an editorial attachce of the State, who was en the ground te act as second for Mr. Beirne, was a'se arrested and put under bends. Riddlcbcrger returned te the city aud seen after quietly proceeded te fill au engagement te speak at a large Readjust ing meeting here. He was en the stand when he was arrested upon a warrant and under 3,000 bends. AH three of the gentlemen who engaged in this triangular aflair of honor are veil known and occupy higli social positions. Mr. Wise is the nephew of the late Gov. Ucnry A Wise, se well known in connec tion with the politics of the state and first cousin of Jehn A. Wise, ene of Maheue's most trusted leaders. Riddlcbcrger was the nominee of the Republicans for ser-gcaut-at-arms of the Senate last winter. He and Mr. Wise have both been stump ing the state during the present canvass, the former for the Readjustees and the latter for the Democrats. Air. Wise's brother, General 1'eyten Wise, was party ten duel with United States District At torney L. L, Lewis, which eccuried near Warreuteu. in this state, about six weeks age. On that occasion Wise fired his pistol in the air and Lewis missed his aim. That affair grew out of a publication of offensive language te a brother of Lewis, alleged te have been used by Congressman SVise in a political speech in this campaign. The af fair has created general interest licie and is the theme of conversation in all circles. There have abeady been four duels grow ing out of the bitterness between partisans in this canvass, and it is believed that there arc one or two affairs of honor grew ing out ei tne same cause en tapis, it is stated that Senater Mahone will publish a lengthy letter in the Richmond Whig in re ply te General Jubal Early's most severe denunciation of Mahone.
