SATURDAY EVENING. OCT. 15, 1881:
Patti.
Secial lepreclUen et the
Seng tress.
Lucy II. Heeper's Paris Letter.
What a mistake she Las made, setting
aside all the moral aspects of the case, did
this gifted, petted crcatura, who, se few
years age, was as much a social idol as she
was a theatrical one ! She was sought for
and caressed by the proude3t dames of the
old French noblesse, and the Marquise de
Cauz had as brilliant and successful a ca
reer off the stage as AdelinaPatti upon it.
New all that is changed. Every deer that
once flew wide open at her approach en the
Faubourg St. Germain is new closed
against her. She Was net happy in her
married life, it is true, but at all events
the husband was her own choice ; it was a
love match en her side, at least, and more
over with her lay honor, and fioed re
pute, and the bpetless name that had lent
lustrue te art, being that of its greatest
artiste. As a famous prima denna said te
me sadly one day, " She had done as much
te lower our profession in the eyes of the
world as Jenny Liud did te exalt it." And
peer little woman, in the headlong obsti
nacy of her infatuation, she puts it totally
out of the power of even her warmest
friends te jay, " I de net believe it." She
will net even se act as te permit her friends
te ignore the present stat3 of affairs.
Nicelini is always en evidence, in a box at
the theatre or behind the scenes when she
sings, at her side when she drives out, in
her drawing room when she receives com
pany he is always the prominent figure in
the scene, which is in abominably bad
taste, te .say the least of it. And from all
that I hear peer little Patti did net improve
matters much by exchanging her thrall
dem te M. dc Caux for her bondage te M.
Nicelini. Her chains in the fust in
stance might be heavy, but they were
honest matrimonial fetters at least. New,
though they wear the sembleuce of gar
lands of roses, I am told that the iron un
derneath the flowers is no less weighty
and galling. Ner aie the claims upon her
purse less heavyer constant. Instead of pay
ing the play-debts or the Marquis de Caux,
she is new called upon te support the whole
Nicelini (or Nicolas) family, te give them
their right name, including the five chil
dren of the gentleman himself. Then the
purchase of the Welsh castle was another
immense mistake It has cost her oceans
of money, and she cau find no pui chaser
who will take it off her hands, even at a
great less. The readouts of the neigh-,
borheod refuse te associate with her, and
even her servants treat the peer little
woman with marked disrespect. " I even
give them champagne te drink," .she said,
pitceusly, ene day, " but that does net
make theni behave a particle better." She
actually fancied, this petted darling of so
ciety and art, that .she could de as she
pleased without calling down upon her
head the penaltics inflicted upon ether
women, but she has found out her mis
take when it is tee late te .seek for a lem
cdy. What an ovation she would have
had in America had she gene theie as the
Marquise de Caux, as well as the Queen
of Seng, the song-bird with unsullied
wings as well as with silvery notes ! Alas
for the felly of se fair and gifted a woman,
one, tee, who for se many years walked
stainless amid temptation !
