LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCES, MONDAY, OCTOBER 10, 1881. Lancaster fnteilfaencer. MONDAY EVENING, OCT. lO, 1881. PKES1DKNT UAUFlKLD. BT HESBf W. LOSOFELLOW. "Evenni dal martirie a qucttapace." These words tlic Peet heard in Paradise, Uttered by one who, bravely dying here,' In the true faith, was living in that sphere. Where the Celestial Cress of sacrifice Spread its protecting arms athwart the skies . And, set thereon, like Jewels crystal clear, The souls magnanimous, that knew net fear, Plashed their effulgence en his dazzled eyes: Ah, me ! hew dark the discipline et pain, Were net the suffering followed by the sense Of infinite rest and infinite release: This i-J our consolation ; and again A great soul cries te us In our suspense : "I came from martyrdom unto this peace J" N. Y. Independent. THE TOBACCO MARKET. SEKU LEAF AN1 HAVANA Fer the Week Ending Saturday, October 8. iu A. m. U. S. Tobacco Journal. A calm lias at last settled ever the leaf market and the wild rush, bustle and ex citement of the last month has subsided. This must net be construed, though, as if our market had become dull and inactive. There is the same desire en all sides te buy as has characterized the market of late ; but the sellers are tee independent and ask such figures that stifle even the reck lessly disposed would-be investors. Hold Held ers of ?80 Connecticut, especially, exhibit an air of independence calculated te in spire outsiders of the tobacco trade with astonishment and reverence. Fer many years past packers of Connecticut have fared badly en their investments. Cen. nectieut had gene out of fashion and no matter bow really geed the leaf, manufac tufers and jobbers could be induced with great difficulty only te take it off their bands. Up te about a week age the wrap pers of the '80 Connecticut crop had been treated with the utmost indifference by manufacturers and jobbers. Suddenly a change has corae ever them. New they want the tobacco ; new they can't get it. Helders evidently intend te get square with an unappreciative tobacco trade ; they want 30, 40 and 50 cents for fine wrappers ; if you can't pay for it you are net urged te take it. Ne one can blame sellers for their policy ; if their claim that the '80 Cenuecticut is the finest ever raised in the state is correct (and we hare re peatedly urged our readers te pay mere attention te this crop than they weie in clincd te de) they will get their figures. There is no substitute except Sumatra for fine, wrappers thcre is no excess of them and indications arc net wanting- that very seen fine wrappers will net be found in our market before this year is out. 'SO Pennsylvania is al ready very much sorted out, and but few holders still have choice lets ; '80 Wiscon sin is almost out of the market ; '80 Ohie and New Yerk state possess but a mini mum of geed stocks. Consequently there is no check te the aspirations of holders of line tobaccos. Frem the revenue report it is seen that the cigar manufacturing bus iness is as flourishing as ever, and from what we learn no abatement in activity is anticipated and orders for months ahead are leing held by manufacturers. The following is a specification of the sales made : Pennsylvania Crep '80 : 2,e00 cases ; fine 22 cents ; medium 15 te IS cents ; low 12 cents ; fillers G te 12 cents. Connecticut Crep '80 : 1,500 cases ; wrappers 27 te 45 cents ; seconds V. cents New Yerk State Crep '80 : 1,200 cases ; prices (reported) from 13 te 15 cents. Interested parties refuse auy information. Ohie Crep '80 : 700 cases ; 7 te 12 cents. Wisconsin Crep '80 : 300 cases ; 12 te 18 cents. Havana Market continues exceedingly active ; '80 is selling very rapidly and '81 is fast becoming popular. Sales 1,500 bales. Prices uuehauged. A New Firm. The New Yerk leaf market is about te have an additional, and by no means in significent addition, te its leaf firms. Mr. S. Pretzfeld, for many years of the Pitts burgh, Pa., leaf firm Pretzfeld Bres., has formed a co-partnership with one of the leading Lancaster tobacco men and routed the premises 180 Pearl street, for an exten sive leaf establishment. Mr. Pretzfeld is a thorough judge of tobacco, personally supervises the packing of leaf in the coun try, aud has the reputation of an able and trustworthy business man. The stvlc of the new firm will be S. Pretzfeld & Ce. The firm also has an cstablishmc lit at -15 and 47 Market street, Lancaster. Sales of Seed Leaf in September. Leaf. The seed leaf market of New Yerk ex hibited during the month of September unparalleled activity. Mere tobacco changed hands than was ever before re corded here in a single mouth, the total transfers amounting te 22,100 cases. Busi ness was equally active iu the producing sections of the country during the same time, buyers from all the prominent mar kets traversing with unexampled rapidity the various lines of communication lead ing te the tobacco fields of the seed leaf giewiug states. Mere tobacco was purchased in the field in September, as well as in our local ware houses, than was ever known before. The cause of this uuusual activity is, it is hardly necessary te remark, te be feuud in the prosperous condition of the country at large aud the general belief that de sirable seed leaf is likely te be scarce aud dear the coming year. High prices have uniformly been paid for the green crops of the past year, and a corresponding appreciation has been es tablished en old stocks. It is net improb able that the highest rauge for both new and old has already been reached, the close of the past growing season having mater ially improved the early bad prespect of the new crop, upon which the advauccd prices of both new and old were based. The rates at which seed leaf has been bought and is te be sold this year are pal eulated te diminish our expert trade, but the falling-off in this direction is likely te be eflset by an increased demand for home consumption. Gang' Repert. Sales of seed leaf tobacco reported by J. S.
