LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCER, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 8, 1881. Hancaster fntelliaenrcr.. SATURDAY EVENING, OCT. 8, 1881. Arthur's Fine Werk. A Surprise in In Stere for Somebody. Philadelphia Ledger's X. Y. Correspondence. The Republican state convention has finished up its work, and, by the time this reaches the Ledger office, its members from ether parts of the state will be well en their way home. The result, you will ob serve, fully bears out the previous state ment of your correspondent that peace and harmony would prevail, instead of a storm, in consequence of the astute management of the machine at the critical moment by President Arthur in keeping his friend, Mr. Conkling out of the convention, and prevailing upon his "Stalwart" followers te retain from anything like factious resist ance, cither te a Half-breed organization of the convention or te the subsequent nomi nations. The Half-breeds, however, will make a bail mistake if they suppose they have made an end of the Utica "ex-boss," and an equally bad mistake if they sup pose that lie voluntarily absented himself from the academy, as if from an appre hension that he would be beaten there. There was another power quietly, but effectually at work, te ensure his absence, and in due time that power ( unless some unforeseen change in somebody's mind oc cur in the meanwhile ) will invite him out of the valley of humiliation te " go up higher." Depend upon it, tueic is a sen satien in store for the Halt-breed brethren, of a character te make them suspect that after all things arc net what they seem." Meanwhile the president has net only preserved the unity .of the party in New Yerk, but obtained a vote of confidence from a convention which was engineered from Hist te last by open opponents or lukewarm friends. Mr. Arthur has always been credited with being the most adroit political manager in New Yerk, and the great tilings which he has new se quietly and unobtrusively accomplished will have te be added te his account. Voerliees te the Seuth. In his hjtcech at the opening of the At lanta cotton exhibition, en Wednesday, Senater Vnerhccs urged the Southern people te manufacture their own cotton, instead of sending it te New England and te Europe for spinning and wcaviug " at an expense which is always de ducted from its price." Mr. Voor Veor Voer hces continuing said : The manufac tures of the East and Middle states weie nurtured by the govern (U3nt when unablu te stand alone. I am prepared te say that within proper and sale limits and with pri mary causideratieu for the agriculturist as the foundation aud beginning of every thing, the same policy of enceur.igeiucut which has heretofore in general marked our legislation should new be centiuued te the infant manufacturing industries of the Seuth aud West." Lire Minnesota Democrats. The Democratic state convention of Minnesota, met in St. Paul. General II. II. Selhy was chosen permanent chairman. Resolutions were adopted declaring (or the beuest p lyment of all obligations resting upon the M.ite ; expressing sorrow for the death or President Garfield aud reaffirm ing the principles of the last Democratic nation il convention. A ticket was nomi nated, headed by General R. W. Jehnsen for governor, and Justices Clark, Dickens and Mitchell, of the supreme court (the two latter Republicans), were endorsed for election. i,a.m;ani;;i IIOCSEIIOLH MAItKr.T. BAIRV.
