IIT FATHEB ItYAX.
My feet are wearied and my hands arc tired
My soul oppressed.
And wltli desire have I long desired
Rest only rest,
'TIs hard te tell, wlicn tell Is almost vain.
In barren ways;
'Til hard te sew and never garner grain
In harve3t days.
The burden of tny days is hard te bear.
Rut Ged knows best;
And I have prayed but vain has been my
sweet rcat.
'TIs hard te plant In spring and never reap
The autumn yield;
'TIs hard te till and when 'tis tilled te weep
O'er fruitless Held.
Ami e 1 ciy. a weak and human eiy,
Se heart oppressed ;
And se 1 igh, a weak and human High
Fer rest ler rest.
My way has wound across the desert years,
And cares infest
My path, and tliteugh the Mewing et het te.iis
1 pine for rest.
'1'vvas always se ; when still a child I laid
On mother's breast
My wcaiy little head e'en then I prayed
Asniew, ler rest.
Ami I am resiles still ; 'twill toen be o'er.
Far down the west

Where I shall test.
The Prince of Tramps.
Memphis Appeal.
The very romance of tramp Jife was ex
emplified yesterday by a dilapidated look
ing individual with only one le; whefcc
name was registered at the station house
as W. II. Cardwcll. He is known te many
persons as a reporter and has lived a most
variegated lire. Ills full name is AVyatt
Henry Cardwell. His father was the emi
nent Dr. Cardwcll, of Richmond, Va.. and
his mother was the eldest daughter of the
world renowned orator Patrick Henry.
Cardwcll is said te be a graduate of
Washington university and has withal a
polished education. He has the remark
able facility of repeating long poems from
memory. It is said he can troll outChilde
Hareld, Dun Juan and such poems from
beginning te end. At the age of fifteen he
joined the Cenfedciate army and was shot
at Manassas, losing his leg. He was taken
te Richmond hospital, where he excited
the attention of prominent ladies and
gentlemen by his precocity. Afterward
he became private secretary te Senater
Foetc. He has waudcicd all ever the
country, being new heard of in New Yerk,
new in Cincinnati, new in Louisville, and
new in Washington. At the present time
be is heard of in Memphis. He has done
considerable newspaper work in his time,
was connected with the National Star
at Geedman. Miss., in 1878, and afterward
was en the Kosiciuske Chronicle. Whcre
evcr he has been he has had a pursuer
whisky. It has made him tramp all ever
the United States, and has frequently
caused him te be arrested. He lias an
extensive acquaintance with the great men
of the country, and has new in his posses
sion a letter from Alexander II. Stephens
ceugratuIatiu! him upon his reform.
He is a man of geed address and has re
duced begging te a fine art. Fer instance,
in approaching a.strauger, he will say:
"Will you pai den the perfect ingcniios ingcniies
ness el the request, but could you lend
me half a dollar te get a night's lodging ?"
Should the pei son thus approached deny
tbe rcqiient, he will net be indignant or
insulting, but wi'l gracefully chauge the
eonvcisatien te national politics, the ethics
of journalism, the traits of great men or
similar topics, He is an accomplished
performer en the banjo. With all his bad
habits, he is said te be honest. It is the
one lemnant of the Viiginia cutlemau.
A moie lcmaikablc career could hardly be
imagined. Fiem a line family te the pro
fession of a common tiamp, and he is only
about IKi yeai s of age. There was a time
when he would feicc his way into the
families of respectable people, but he does
se no longer, and it is only tee palpable
that lie nas lest caste wan mmsell.

'BLANKETS.
Let a $5 wool blanket speak for our
bedding.
Manufacturers arc responsible for a
geed deal of the common cheating in
blankets. Cotten gets into almost all
the low-priced blankets, without get
ting into the tickets. They are sold
for all wool by the makers, and few
merchants knew the fact. A little
cotton can be hidden in a woolen
blanket, and a geed profit hidden
with it. If you find a fibre of cotton
in our $.1 woolen blanket come and
tell us.
