FRIDAY EVENING, SEPT. 30. 1881.
Cerner In Cotten.
A Sert or English Jim Keene.
Londen Correspondence New Yerk World.
The cotton corner has resulted in the
temporary stoppage of nearly all the cot
ton mills throughout the north of England
an event which threatens te inflict
much less and injury en employers and
operatives alike. The origin of this move
ment must be traced back te the begin
ning of last May. when, through the great
depression of trade, the price of cot
ton had fallen very low that is te
say te about sixpence a pound.
Even then, however, it was believed
by many that the lowest point had
net te be rcach'cd, although ether experi
enced judges of the market considered
that supplies would pour in, that trade
would revive, at least for a time, and con
sequently that prices would be much
lower before they were higher. Accord
ing te the statements which were made te
me recently when I was in Manchester,
one large speculator a sort of English
Jim Kccnc came te the conclusion that
it was a geed time te buy rather than te
sell. He had a large capital at his dis
posal, and he determined te go
in for a " big haul," bought up
all the cotton he could, cither
in America or India, for delivery during
August and September. The bears went
te work with equal spiiit en the ether
side, and sold heavily what they had net
get. When August came the bears were
called upon for deliver)', and ever since
they have been obliged te furnish cotton
at the rates which the chief speculator re
ferred te hud chosen te fix. Throughout
the latter part of August the price was
about 7d. per pound. Thcspinneis took
no part in this speculative transaction, but
they find themselves severely punished by
it. Most of them go en merely from hand te
mouth, with no reverse supply te fall back
upon, and when the pinch came they had
no alternative but te pay the higher piiccs.
As one of them complained at a meeting
the ether day, " he had te pay a farthing
a pound meic for cotton en Monday than
he had paid en Friday, which, under the
circumstances, was perfectly iniquitous.'"
The spinners came te the conclusion that
they could break the coiner by closing
their mills, and this couise they have
taken, proponing for the present te limit
the cxpciiincut te a single week.

Failure I Chicago ritm Silll Rising.
Ciiivr:e,Sept.29. Tha f.iihue of Heugh
& Ce., commission merchants of this city,
is announced. The suspension is owing
te the heavy advance in October wheat, of
which they were largely shei t. They were
reported te be brokers for the Cincinnati
clique, but they lefuse te affirm or deny
the assertion or te give any facts
coucerning the affair, except te say
that the failure of outside parties te put
up margins caused their suspension, and
that they expect eventually te resume.
Their failure scit wheat up rapidly, and
ether grains participated in the boom.
Sales of November wheat were made at
$1.3S(ii 12, and of November ceru up te
72J. November wheat closed yesterday
at $1.40j and Novcmber ceru at 70 .
