TIMELY ADVICE FBUH THE GERMAN TOWN TELEGRAPH. Keeping Grapes Fresh. Particularly at this season, when grapes are ripening, the discussion is generally started as te the bert method of preserving them through the winter. Seme of these methods involve a great deal of labor, and after all arc seldom successful and rarely worth the labor and expense. Besides, who cares about keeping grapes all winter? Every fruit has its season, and when that comes te an end the desire for it passes. Apples can be kept until July in very geed condition and with very little labor ; but who cares for them after April ? It is se with pears the relish for them disappears at the end of January, about as long as they can be easily kept. Peaches, the season of which is very brief, arc canned, and when woll-denc tuey arc liked by a great mauy people, though we de net think they arc growing in popularity with theso of a rather fastideus taste many families never using them at all. As te grapes, they can very easily be kept iu geed condition until Christmas, and beyond this are very little cared for. And the best method te put them up is that pursued by the crape-growers of New Yerk and Michigan. the clean, dry pine box, packing them, after removing all the decayed or ever-ripe berries, firmly, with out the addition of any snbstance as a pro tection putting in the boxes, heMing from two te four pounds, only the pure bunches of grapes. "We knew, of no better way ; there may be ; and if any of our readers possess it, we ehall be glad te make room for tclliug us what it is. The Coming Tree."' A contemporary contains an article un der this heading, in which the eucalyptus glebulus is referred te, and which is spok en of as just introduced into portions of the United States, and that it is adapted te every part of the republic ! The arti cle says further that it is " hardier than the chestnut, and like the latter will grew in the rockiest soils." Alse, that "for the Eastern and Middle States, where the lack of forest protection is net uiifrcqueutly felt, no tree has been offered the culturist that can present se mauy primary points of vantage as this Australian immigrant, and its general introduction and cultuic should be a matter of but little time." We have never seen an article of equal length contain se much ignorance aud se many downright absurdities. Iu the first place, this tree was introduced into the southern parts of California about eight years age, where it flourishes very well, and is icgarded as a valuable tree iu many respects. It will de aise in most of our Southern States ; but te s.iy that it is adapted te the Eastern or Middic States proves that the writer of the article iu question was totally ignorant of what he undertook te inform ethers. We might as well expect the banana, the orange, the lemon, ihe pineapple, the palm-tree, &c., te grew here. During the Centennial cel ebration, a gentleman from California passing iu fieut of our premises saw an eucalyptus growing iu our front yard and he was sui prised at seeing it se far North that he stepped t-i examine it, aud said he had seen none se large since he had left California. It grew during the season about eight feet, but it fell a victim te the fint frost in the latter pail of October. The plant was presented te us by Messrs. D. Landrcth & Sens and teas gtetcii under glass. When frost-bitten the stem could be crushed between the thumb and fin ger. Wc would, therefore, respectfully sug gest that this ought t dispose of the eu calyptus glebulus, se far as it has any thing te de with the " Eastern and Mid dle states." Ferest I'ireH mill Mern Timber. Frem all sides come discussions and suggestions en the timberqiicslieii. Here before us is an article iu a Londen p.ipcr, showing the enormous amount of red cedar used for pencils, and the incredible difficulty of obtaining it. Fearful, it is said, that the supply will fail, the celebrated Faber has bought a large tract of land and planted it with cedars, which may help his firm after he is gene, if it docs no geed te himself. Then we have also be fore us a cry from New England. The mill owners use large quantities of spools which arc made from the birch, hut the birch forests are giving out, aud what are they te de uext ? Se it is with various trades and occupations, requiring peculiar kinds of weeds iu their manufactures. The timber which they severally requite is undoubtedly getting scaiccr, and it is a natural anxiety which asks us what are we going te de about it'.' The only response is, plant mere. Hut who is te de it and hew is it te be done '.' The easy-going citizen who is imbued with the majesty of the law, thinks govern ment ought te de it. Governments de it in ether Countries, why should net euis attempt what ethers successfully de'.' It does net fellow as a thing of course. Other governments are paternal. They are accustomed te supply their immediate necessities, and provide for the future. Our government is our servant. It is sim i ply te keep peace aud order among our selves, aud te se arrange that each has the largest liberty possible without infringing en his neighbor. Our security is in keep ing down in every possible way tue mint ber of office holders, otherwise the govern ment becomes the master, net the servant, of the people The number is already much tee large, aud it thus becomes a questieu whether if the gevet anient went into the forest business or any scale worthy of se large a country, the attend ant evils would net be greater than the geed te be accomplished. This is a ques tion for statesmen, and as they arc net likely te agroe about it, we cannot hope for such direct government aid. It comes back te private enterprising. That forest-culture can be made te pay when judiciously managed has been shown in our columns for years past. It need net take a lifetime le get one's money back, but for all this there are many drawbacks which will prevent investments in that tine. Here, ' for instance, as we write we are in a dense smoke from the burning forests hundreds of miles away, and se it has been every year. Michigan, Canada, New Jersey, New Yerk and por tions of New Englaud bring every year le Germautewn their disastrous talc of smoke. It is peer encouragement te the forest-planter te feel that the cud of all his labors may be a forest fire. Yet the dan ger must be encountered if wc are te in crease te any great extent our timber sup ply. There arc risks in everything we un dertake. It is evident that the whole subject is one beset with difficulties. That timber is growing scarcer we all knew ; that an abundance of timber is essential te our national progress is clear ; that some .pre .pre cauteous should be taken against waste, and some encouragement te raise new forests is desirable, all can well believe ; but just hew te go about all this is a problem that has net yet been well-worked out.
