A Perpetual Ice-tierge. Wbere CesWenld be Unpleasantly Coel en the Hottest Summer Day. Within an bear's drive from Newton, N. J., may be witnessed one or tbe .strangest sights in this country a perpetual ice gorge. This gorge exists at the feet of - the Blue mountains, back of Swattswoed Lake and Hiddleville, and is but a few miles west of Newton. The gorge is sev eral hundred yards in extent, from ten te thirty feet deep, with numerous caves and clefts in the rock where the ice lies. The main gorge is located but a short distance from the mountain, and the shade at that spot is very dense, the sun apparently never penetrating it. The entire bottom of the gorge is covered with thick, clear ice, and the crevices and caves arc filled with it. That it is a natural icehouse, there can be no doubt ; hundreds of tens might be taken out without appreciably decreasing the quantity. Much of this great mass has doubtless lain there for years, the ice gradually melting en top and being added te each year. The ther mometer, which during the recent drought and " het spell " registered 103 degrees in Newton, marked just 38 degrees at the same time at the bottom of the gorge tee cold for a person te remain there any length of time. A few feet from one end of the gorge a spring of the most delicious sparkling water bubbles up through the ice. it tastes slightly of iron and is very satisfactory te the thir&t. This water stands at thirty-four degrees about as cold as one could comfortably drink it. Samuel Thompson, who owns the farm en which this natural curiosity has been found, said when asked about the gorge by a reperter: "Why, yes, I 'spese it is rather remarkable, though we never set no store by it, 'cept when we wanted ice. The neighbors all gees there when they wants ice and 'tain't necessary for t' build anjr ice houses 'round here. Early in the spring th' gorge is filled clcau te the top with clear ice, but long in the summer it gets melted down, but then thcy's alters tens and tens e' ice thar an' they hez been ever since I kin rem'ber. Yc see, th' water runs down effen th' mountain inter that holler during th' fall and as they aiut much outlet it jest stays thai an' freezes. I 'spese some e' th' ice in that thar cave has been thar forever. The water in the spring, though, is mighty geed tastin', and my wife sets great store by it, 'cause she says 't powerful geed fer rlieumatiz. We hev knewed 'bout the gorge fer years, but ez I reckoned they was plenty jest like it 'round the country I never said much about th' el thing. Yes, they hez been a geed many people 'round here t' sce th' spring this summer, but mostly city chaps that wasbeardin' overt' Nowtenau' come out jest t' see th' sight." Mr. Thompson has been offered large sums of money by enterprising capitalists for the gorge, but declines te sell, as he is wealthy and thinks the property is worth just as much te him as it would be te some one else. Mnrdcr Jlreiight te Light. A fanner Accused of Murdering u Friend In 1X77 te Whom II e Owed 3,000. In 18TG a well known citizen of Lincoln, Placer county, Cal., named Singleton, dis appeared. A farmer named Nilcs, a re spected citizen and new a resident of Sa cramento, owed Singleton :J,000. Single ton visited Niles te collect, the money, and the two men visited Sheridan, in the same county, together. Frem that day Single ton has net been seen. The men were old friends, having crossed the plains togeth er. Nitcs's statement that Singleton went te Arizona was accepted and believed by the community. Soen after the disap pearance of Singleton, Niles filled up an abandoned welt near his house. Latterly some properly belonging te Singleton has been seen in Nilcs's possession, especially a geld watch which is known te have be longed te the missing man. The few neighbors who remembered the circum stances of the disappearance and the filling of the well connected the two circumstan ces together. Niles liad sold the farm and the new proprietor consented that the well should be opened te its old depth. This was done en Thiusday and Friday last. The body of Singleton was found at the bottom of the well. The high respec tability of Nilcs, the popularity of Single ton, and the prominent relations sustained by both te the community invest, the case with most exciting interest. A despatch from Wheatland announces that Nilcs was arrested, charged with the murder of Sin gleton. Niles refused te make a state ment and was taken te Lincoln. - i;e iSoiiMelc.
