Baby Talk.
Mr. K. J. Burdeileln Iturlingten Hawkcyc.
Well, times Hies, the summer is almost
ever, the mackerel have cexc up the bay
and arc biting like poison, the ferus aie
growing old, and the boy is learning te
talk se that ether people can understand
Jiim.
" If you would let me have him about
one month," said that pleasant-voiced and
pleasant-faced school mistress who came
down here from up the river last week,
" I could break him of that careless habit
of speaking."
Just because the boy had akeil his stern
dark-brewed father :
" Peppuls, whurs is mines fiffiu pole you
peakin' mania urn day ?"
Which by interpretation is, as the pleas
ant voiced school mistress would have
taught him te say it :
" Father, where is my fishing red of
which you were speaking te my mother,
with reference te purchasing it for me at
some time in the indefinite future ?"
And her little serene highness shook hot
head aud said no ; he was losing his baby
talk, aud learning te speak English tee
rapidly as it was. The pleasant face of
the school mistress wrinkled up into au
interrogation point.
" Scheel mistress," the Jester said, " en
all matters of education your shapely head
is net hilly ; it is as level as a new mown
lawn. But you don't want te teach the
baby grammar, aud you don't want him te
speak geed English. Yeu want him te be
a baby aud you want te encourage him te
indulge iu baby talk. In the years, te
come, when the pudgy little lists will dig
great tears out of the blue eyes because
they can't remember in just what points
there should aud must be exact harmony
between the verb and the subject ; when
he is confident that he will die before he
can remember hew many fellows beside
ad, ante, con, in or inter,' aie followed by
the accusative ; when he knows the
world will sUiwl still for just two hours
after bchoe! if lie can't recall that all
terminations in something or ether
take the whac you may call it after
some kind of things ; when he is se trust
ing and has se much confidence in Mr.
Davics that he is net only willing but
anxious te ae.jei.il his statement that the
sum of the three angles of a triangle is
equal te two 1 iylit angels, without going
te the beard te prove his truthfulness by
demonstration ; along in these days the
rocineiy of his baby talk will come back
te us like sweet music. He will have
trouble enough with the English language
and all the appurtenances theicunte ap
pertaining by and by. Ne," he re
sponded in answer te a silent inquiry of
the pleasant-faced school mistress, lit
docs net knew his aipliabet, thauk Heaven,
aud he bhail net be bothered with it. Yes,
he has alphabet blocks and knows all the
pictures en them and many preposterous
i-eries about the pictures. Oh, yes, he can
count-; hear him new counting the pebbles
he has brought from the beach : one, fiee,
seven, free, seven, ten, fiee, live, seven,
free ; e.'iLiiuly he c.ui count, by a system
of his e.vn, te i, which is mere than most
people have. Don't make a prig of the
baby, school mistiess. Frem the day en
which they arc six ycais old they must.
under the school system of the states, be
gin te study, and sit up straight, and be
have properly aud speak uencctly, and
from that time until the r ive hides them
they live and speak and act veibally
speaking, they be, ami de and suffer
under social and educational surveill.iuce.
And I claim that at Ie:i,t. mx teats of the
life of man and woman should be free ;
free as the air ; fiee te talk as Hid brook
runs, with untrammeled inusic-il prattle
and babble. Why heie, a few weeks age,
came a melancholy looking child, about
four years old, and, in my presence and
hearing, pointed te me and said te his
mother :
' ' Ma'ma, of whom is that gentleman
speaking '.-'
"Peer littls V3 My he.iit bled for
him. Tint al'ioiueon I took that boy
down by flic f: ijel and taught him te say,
' Ma'am, what is d.it man speakin' you
about '.'" and i ceen-tt net his general gram
mar ou Ihu .same easy basis, and leek inn
in the eye if t hat boy didn't tan up like a
young Indian in two days, and he gained
seven pounds in thiec weeks.
" Yeu see," the Jester concluded in au
apologetic tene, for hcliad done an un
usual amount of preaching that day, "you
see, we haven't a very bread experience in
training childicn ; tte have only one chick
te cluck ever aud scratch ter, but we're
bound he .shan't go te school until he's
through being a baby,, and we knew,
school mistress, that he's the happiest
baby that ever mangled grammar.'

A Little Inside Chapter That Wilt be Read
With Interest by the Public.
Railroads, banks and capitalists arc the great
moving and controlling power of the weild
new, and there Is a read, a rough read, through
which all that attatu te eminence must pass
and many fall in the tight. Theugtit, study,
mental and brain work is the highway te emi
nence ; and work, thought, worrying, plan
ning, calculating, all fceuupen the brain and
nervous system, and tie results are Nervous
Prostration, Heart Disease, Apoplexy, Paraly
sis, Neuralgia, Nervousness, Sleepless Nights,
Sick and Nervous Headache, and a sudden
dropping out of the business ranks from ever
work and nervousness in some et its forms.
This is the natural consequence; but if the
nervous system is fed and suppperted in pre
portion te the waste and demands mane upon
it, these fearlul results would net be heard of
or known.
The remedy is a simple, sensible one. Simply
te feed the overworked, irritable nervous sys

done successfully every day, by the use et Dr.
