THE PRESIDENT IMPROVED.
IN SPITE OP THE HOT WEATHER
BETTER THAN FOR TEN DAYS,
ON THK KOAD TO KKCO.tKRY,
Condition Encouraging this Morning.
Elbeken, If. J., Sept. 8. 8:30 a. m.
Official At the morning examination,
made at eight ocleck, the president's pulse
was 104, temperature 98.7, respiration 18.
He was restless and wakeful during the
arly part of the night, but after 12, mid
night, slept well until morning. lift gen
eral condition appears mere encouraging.
D. W. Bliss,
F. H. Hamilton.
Better than for Ten Bays Past.
Elberon, N. J.. Sept. 8.-9:20 a. m.
Dr. Bliss says the patient is in better con
dition this morning than he has been for
10 days, his pulse is 104, temperature and
respiration about normal. Filed 10:15 a.
m.
Better News Premised.
Lexr, Branch, Sept. 8. The president's
physicians are much encouraged this
morning. Dr. Bliss said the patient is new
better than for eight or ten days past, and
there will be still bstter news in a day or
two. Te-day is net quite se warm as yes
terday, but cooler weather is anxiously
oeked for.
Longing ter Coeler Weather.
Leng Branch, N. J., Sept. 8, 12:15 p.
m. Reports lrem the president continue
favorable. Some apprehension is felt,
however, ou account of the continued het
weather, and it is feared unless we get a
sea breeze seen, that the afternoon febrile
rise will cause the temperature te in
crease again, and render the patient's
coucitien mere unsatisfactory towards
night. The cabinet arc much enceur
aged with this merniujr's bulletin.
but aie among the number
who are anxiously awaiting cooler
weather. Remarks such as ' Fate
seems te be against the president, ". and
Hew is it possible for him te improve
with such unfavorable weather?" are
heard en all sides. Larce numbers of ex
cursienists arrived this morning and the
avenues prescntan appoarance such as is
customary at the height of the season.
O round for Encouragement.
Elberon, N. J., Sept. 8. 12.40 p. in.
Dr. Bliss, who just made an examination
of the prcsidcut, says his pulse at this
hour is 94, temperature normal and respira
tion 17. This, said the doctor, is the best
showing we have had in the case at neon
for some days. The announcement of the
figurps was received with great satisfac
tion by all these gathered around the El
beron hotel. Attorney General Mac
Veagh expressed the opinion that there is
new apparently geed greuud for encour
agement. Dr. Bliss Says He Is Convalescent.
Loxe Branch, Sept. 8. 12:50 p. m.
The favorable condition of the president
at the neon examination continues, and
has had the effect of cheering all hearts.
The feeling in all quarters is changed
from anxiety te most sanguine opinions
that the president has at last fairly
started en the read te recovery. Dr,
Bliss is authority for the statement
that the president is convalescent. He
made this assertion in the presence of
Dr. Hamilton. The latter gentleman,
who
net
any
strictly adheres te his policy
te talk for publication about
of his patients, showed by
his expression that he did net object te
the statement. Secretary Windem was
informed by a representative of the asso
ciated press of the result of Dr. Bliss's ex
amination at neon aud at the conclusion
thereof made the remark that " that was
splendid."

Shocking Less of Life The Worst Net
Yet Told.
Detroit, Sept. 8. Telegraphic commu
nication is entirely cut off with the worst
parts of the burnt region, se reports are
fragmentary, and it is hoped exaggerated,
but there are many fears that the worst is
far from having been told. The complete
destruction of Richmondville is confirmed.
The villages of Carsen, Charleston, Sani Sani
lacce and Tyre arc reported te be com
pletely destroyed, and Ashley partly se.
The townships of DeIaware,Nunken, Aus
tin, in Sanilacce, and Bingham, Sherman
and Paris, in Huren county, are burned
ever and desolated. The crops in these
townships were all harvested, and nearly
all are new lest.
The remains of a family of seven named
Redmond were found in a well near
Charleston, they having entered the well
for shelter, and being there suffocated.
The charred remains of Henry Cele were
also found at Charleston, and a family
named Susula, in Paris township, and a
Mrs. Diebert and three children were
overtaken by the flames and burned te
death.
In Watertown township another family
named Dennisen have, it is believed, been
burned. Twe families named Thornten
and Lee, it is feared.fell a prey te the flames
near Itichmendville. There was a gale
carrying the fire with a rapidity that often
prevented escape. Yesterday afternoon
the direction of the wind changed and this,
it is feared, will add new destruction by
sending the flames ever the sections that
have escaped. It was much cooler last
night, which is in that respect favorable,
but the wind is high and the country help
less. There are no signs of rain, without
which there seems te be no deliverance.
The beard of trade of this city yesterday
appointed a committee te solicit relief for
destitute communities. It is evident that
a large work in that direction is at our
deer. Hundreds e ' families have lest all
their property and by reason of this and
scarce crops are reduced te a condition of
absolute want.

Uarrisiilrg, Sept. 8. The caucuses of
the contending factions et the Republi

were held this morning. Edward MePher MePher

which mustered just seventy delegates,
all told. General Fisher en their behalf
was appointed te nominate ex-Attorney
Gcueral Lear for permanent chairman of
the convention ; they went no further than
te agree upon this feeble pretest against
the boss-ship of Quay, who it has been
understood all along is te be the
Cameren candidate for the position.
In the Stalwart caucus everything
moved with the precision of a wcll wcll

forty-two delegates were present, including
Uunseckcr, Nolde and Boek, from the
upper Lancaster district. Rcist has net

while Chris. Magce and Quay iu an

Special Dispatch te the Intellieescer.
IIarriskure, Sept. 8. The convention
was called te order by State Chairman
Cessna. "Coats off" was the order of
the day, the atmosphere of the hall being
extremely oppressive. At the roll call
some of the delegates were missing, but
the supply of substitutes ran out. Set
speeches were iudulgcd in when the time
came for nomination of temporary chair
man, Gen. Fisher doing the sentiment
business for Lear aud Geergo Oliver, amid
the applause of the boys, demanding re
cognition for the " matchless organizer,"
Quay, who was elected of course.
The vote was 102 for Quay te 83 only
for Lear, almost two te ene in favor of the
Stalwart candidate, Hunscckcr, Boek and
Belcnius voting for Quay, Andy Kauff
man devoting all his care and attention te
Elk county, as the tally progressed. Quay
took the chair quietly and the programme
devised by the Bailey caucus was put
through. Quay read his committee of
seven en contested scats from a prepared
slip, Beleuius, of Lancaster, being a
member. The ether Lancaster delegates
were distributed as fellows : Frantz and
Boek en organization, Brosius and Huii
secker en resolutions. J. A. Stebcr was
named for state committee from the upper
district, aud Jehn II. Laudis was slated
from the lower, but while Frantz and
Brosius were out en committees Uelenius
sent in the name of cx-Shcriff Brcneman
in lieu of that of the Maner statesman.

There is a scheme with respect te street

the nature of a revolution, and the out
come of which will be watched with in

railway company of Chicago, which has
just been incorporated, proposes te
lay tracks in filteeu wards, through
the streets net new occupied for that pur pur
pese, and te charge three cents fare. In
return for the use of the tunnels nnder
the river the projectors offer te light
and pump them out. The money
is said te be at command, and, if th
right of way can be obtained, it is pro
posed te have a line running ou Adams

can make money at a three cent fare and
it seems reasonable that they should at
