A Blunder Showing tioed Judgment.
Printer's Circular.
Considerable amusement lias been
afforded te literary circles in England and
this country by the recent award of a
prize for an original composition en a fa
miliar topic. The glittering biiit te
authors was offered by the directors of the
" National Thrift society " for the best
essay en se common-place a topic as the
thrift of a nation. A committee of ex
perienced and entirely competent literary
inen aided the directors of the National
Thrift society in examining and passing
upon the dissertations offered for compe
tition. After painstaking perusal and
mature deliberation the palm of superi
ority was bestowed upon a resident of
Chichester ene whose name was entirely
unknown te fame. Here was strict im
partiality ; what is mere, the verdict of
popular opinion endorsed the production
which had been crowned with substantial
laurels. Naturally the directors and their
advisers felt very proud of their judgment,
pluming themselves particularly en having
discovered a literary prodigy.
All went merry as a marriage bell until
that vell known author, Mr. Samuel Smiles
came forward, and showed, in the most
conclusive manner, that the greatly lauded
prize essay was taken word for word, letter
for letter, commas, semicolons, periods and
all, from a book written by Mr. Smiles
aud published just fifteen years age, the
well-known Murray, of Londen, being the
publisher. What made matters worse, or
perhaps better, was that Mr. smiles book
was a remarkably successful one, having
passed through several editions, aud theie
being :5,006 copies in cii dilation. Te
crown the glorious sell, the uaine of the
work from which the prize essay en thrift
was boldly and bodily stolen, was,
" Thrift."
All England, that had applauded se
heartily the superior judgment of the
Thiift society directors, new laughed long
and loud in derision at their amusing blun
der. On dispassionate reflection there is
really no fend for incirimcut because eight,
ten or a dozen intelligent gentlemen were
net familiar with the contents of a work
issued a dccide and a half age. There is
no denying that they awarded the piize te
the very best essay that was submitted te
then-collective judgments. Samuel Smiles
has given the best years of his life te the
study and elucidation of individual aud
national thrift. He should feel compli
mented that his success in his chosen field
of study was made se brilliantly apparent
by the reward given te a man who had at
least scuse enough te knew where te liud
the exact art icle wanted. Of the princi
ple involved in se daring a plagiarism the
least said the better, aud wis arc net at
present discussiug the moral aspeet of the
case.
We of the United States have really
nothing te smile at in this, te some, huge
ly comical affair. Net many years age a
carefully picked committee of collegc pro
fessors awarded a first prize te the aston
ishing "clever essay of an undergraduate.
He was a blight yeuuc fellow, and every
body interested congratulated the wise old
heads of the university in having properly
cultivated the exceptional gifts of se re
markably bright a young man. Before
the applause had fairly died away, there
came forward a sophomore who showed,
in the most indisputable manner possible,
that the phenomenally brilliant student
had been te the great mental labor of
carefully ceppyiug his reaguiflcant compo
sition from Buckle's " History of Civiliza
tion." Of course the professors were
laughed at, aud had te bear as best they
could numerous jokes at their expense.
Yet they had only given unstinted praise
where unstinted praise was due. In both
these curious iustauces, really big blunders
served te show that theso making them
had the best of judgments aud were
prompted by disinterested, because impai 3
tial motives.
